Acting Pres. Keith's Report - 2 November 2020

Picture
Rosemary has asked that I pass on her best wishes to all that attend our Melbourne Cup Night.

Penciller Jim performed an outstanding job entertaining us with Melbourne Cup trivia.  I could even answer some of his questions -most were guesses.  Needless to say, I did not win.

Next week our guest speaker is Ray Berghouse with a presentation on “Restored Combat Aircraft”

Stay Safe

Night Report -  2 November 2020

Acting President Keith welcomed members & partners to the meeting.  There were no guests on tonight’s Zoom meeting.
Rosemary asked Keith to pass on good wishes for the Melbourne Cup night.
Sargent for the night was John Tchetchenian

Directors Reports/Notices

Tony M – Your chance to be a member of next year’s board is coming up. If you would like to be nominated, just talk to anybody!  We would love to have you.
Douglas – There is a Bunnings BBQ on Saturday 28th November & he is looking for volunteers.
Keith – Everything is in line for meeting at Springfield House in two week’s time. He is still to have a further discussion on Covid requirements for microphones with them.
John T – Would all members please advise attendance for this meeting by the previous Thursday lunchtime instead of the usual Friday lunchtime as he is currently down one admin person.  The usual reminder email will also be sent out by John on Wednesday.
Stan/Cawas – Tree of Joy meeting has been changed from Thursday to Wednesday due forecast storms.  It will be held at Cawas’s residence at 7pm and those going can watch the State of Origin match there! Please let Cawas know if you will be attending/not attending the meeting.
Colin S – Mini book sale got “washed out” once again last Saturday.  Not looking too good for next Saturday but will make a decision on Wednesday or Thursday morning.  The “wall” at Cherrybrook Shopping Centre is next to the new hearing aid shop, opposite the two dollar shop.
No other directors had any updates to share.

Jim Simpson – Penciller
Eight Irish bred horses in this year’s cup, thus he is wearing an Irish Rugby jersey to pay tribute to our Irish brethren.
They are currently first, second & third favourites.
The Melbourne Cup Quiz was won by John Tchetchenian with a score of 8 out of 12.  A bottle of wine will be delivered to him by either Jim or Tony C.

A quick “best dressed” competition was won by Max who was wearing his bow tie white shirt & suit top.  We are not sure of what else he was wearing as he declined to stand up….

Jim Simpson won the Sargent’s quiz, based on the correct name of the horse (multiple choice) that won various Melbourne Cups from 1865 onwards.

Acting President Keith thanked Jim for his cup quiz and all those for attending & dressing up for the night (top half anyway).
Next week’s speaker will be Ray Berghouse with a presentation on “Restored Combat Aircraft”.

Bunnings BBQ 25th October 2020

It was a challenging day with rain most of the time plus the occasional gust of wind that wet everything.
However, thanks to the unflappable team :- George Chenouda, Paul Laroumanie, Tony Makin, Alan Paynter, Edwina Ruff, Adrain Sonego, Peter Stanton, John Tchetchenian, David Turnbull; we made it through the day with great camaraderie.
The takings were as expected less than usual. We grossed $711.50 + NZD 2.00.
Total cost $339.11 with around $65 worth of drinks left over.
Profit $372.39.

... and We Should be Covid Safe at Our Activities

What's Happening at 55 Coonara Ave.....

From Peter Stanton: Mirvac Statement re  55 Coonara Ave and Terms of Reference for Community Group.:
Mirvac is proposing a new masterplanned community and conservation of remnant forest.
In June 2020 the 26 Hectare site was rezoned from business park to a combination of residential over the existing building and carpark area and environmental community service on the remainder, including the entire existing remnant forest.
Our vision is to create a residential community that focusses on exceptional design featuring up to 600 dwellings (both apartments and houses) and extensive open spaces for residents to enjoy. The design will be sensitive to compliment this unique bushland setting.
Protesting the Forest:
Mirvac understands the important role of the remnant Blue Gum High Forest and the Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest has in providing valuable habitat for local flora and fauna, and we are committed to its protection.

 The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.

What it takes to be a Rotarian

There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club.  From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure.  The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.

  • to be invited
  • to be of a certain age
  • to be male
  • to be a business person

Must have:
  • a sense of humour

  • an interest in the life of the West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook communities
  • a desire to contribute in some way to the running of the Club.
