On behalf of the Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook, we would like to thank all those who came and supported our Trivia Night last Saturday Night (17th August), which is now in its 10th year. We had an equal record attendance with last year of about 240 people, which was a wonderful turnout. Around $6,600 was raised, all of which will go to assist with drought relief. This is a great result for these more challenging economic times. Also Michael from the Cherrybrook Pharmacy at Appletree Shopping Centre (one of our silver sponsors) collected $115 for the drought appeal via a donation jar at the shop. This brings the total raised to $6,705. The Club has now added an additional $295 to bring the total to $7,000 to be donated to drought relief. This is the same amount that we donated from last year's Trivia Night.
We also thank our sponsors and our raffle prize donors (see list below) who also contributed to the success of the night. A large percentage of the money raised came from the raffle. The Club has once again absorbed all expenses from the trivia night so that every dollar raised will go to the farmers.
To ensure that all the money goes directly to distressed families, the proceeds from the night will be given to the Rotary Club of Coonabarabran (see below) to assist them with their Drought Relief work. Since last year’s trivia night, our club has donated around $24,000 and with the $7,000 raised from the trivia night, we will have donated a total of $31,000 to their drought relief program.
The Coonabarabran club is very proactive supporting farmers with numerous projects, including the distribution of pre-paid Visa Cards and food hampers to farmers whom they know are doing it tough. They have identified many more who would benefit from similar support. The visa cards are likely to be spent in the local community on some of life’s necessities to help with farmer’s well being and so are also a way to share the money within the local community as equitably as possible.

Coonabarabran Rotary Club
The Coonabarabran Rotary Club wishes to thank your members sincerely for all your efforts to support the farming community in this area as we face further months of severe drought. Your Trivia night was clearly a massive success, and this donation to our Drought Fund is very, very welcome.
One of the current initiatives we are undertaking is a series of dinners for farmers (and later, their partners) held once a month. It is designed to be a chance for the locals to catch up with each other, to share a light conversation (and I suspect sometimes not quite so light), but definitely a chance to get off the farm and get together. We are working with the Purlewaugh CWA branch - they provide the cooking and we fund it. We hope to extend this to some of the other small communities in the area in the coming months. We have been quite surprised by how noisy the room becomes! Clearly the men have a lot to say to each other!
Grants to farmers and small business operators continue. One young man has just used one to acquire a large vehicle licence to help in getting some off farm income.
One matter that concerns everyone here are the number of accidents that have been occurring on farms. Cutting down limbs from Kurrajong trees has been one way to supply additional stock fodder, but sadly there has been one death, several serious falls and one chain saw accident that I know of personally. In addition, there was an accident when filling a quad bike on the weekend - a spark ignited fuel and the farmer was burnt down one side. He is now in Sydney receiving treatment. A lot of men are extremely tired!
Rotary has been quite wonderful in the past year, and your club is exceptional! Please thank your members again for this generous support. I hope to visit your club when next in Sydney.
On behalf of the Coonabarabran community,
PDG Jo Wilkin
(Acting President 2019-20)
