Welcome to Our Rotary Club

President’s Remarks for 2023-24

The Rotary International theme for the 2023-2024 Rotary year is CREATE HOPE in the WORLD. Rotary International President-elect Gordon R. McInally calls for Rotary to CREATE HOPE in the WORLD by working for peace and mental health and wellbeing.  He urges members to engage in tough conversations and earn the trust that’s necessary to realize these values.   Incoming DG Christine Owen has also built on this theme and helped to incorporate it into District 9685.
 
Consolidating both Gordon and Christine’s vision and building on the good work our Club has achieved in recent years, I want to set out what is the vision for our Board and our Club to pursue and enact in applying the theme of CREATE HOPE in the WORLD in the coming year. I see this as focusing on four main areas, these being:

1. People
2. Better Together
3. Vulnerabilities
4. Process and Technology

  
People:
 
I very much believe that people are our number one asset.  If we look after our Rotary family, they in turn, will look after the world.
 
Our goal here is to ensure our Club meetings are relevant and interesting; that we are increasing the number of vocational visits; that we are growing and maintaining membership; and ensuring we have an active and vibrant Social Committee.  All members will be encouraged to be on a portfolio committee and all members will be contacted on a regular basis to ask, “How are you going?”.  We are also sponsoring an inbound and outbound Rotary Youth Exchange student this year. I believe engaged members are happy members.
The Partners Representative Team (PRT) will also continue.
The main overall objective is to have fun.
  
Better Together:  
 
I believe we can achieve more by building and sustaining relationships, partnerships and collaborative practices and would like to further provide opportunities for our Club to engage and work with other organisations.
 
Our goal here is to build better relationships with local schools, community groups, local businesses, other Rotary Clubs in our district and international organisations and charities.
We will continue to enhance our collaboration with our ‘Sister Club’ in Coonabarabran and will be building on our relationship with Eugowra in western NSW which has developed through our flood relief efforts.
We will also try the concept of ‘scatter meetings’ where members will be encouraged to attend the meeting of another Rotary Club or community organisation as a way of getting us out there, connecting and building networks, and bringing back new ideas and learnings to our Club. 
It is also time to update our vision as it is more than 5 years old.
  
Vulnerabilities:
 
Sadly, the world is becoming a harsher place to live and survive, and we are seeing increased vulnerabilities both locally and internationally. This is where Rotary International and we as a Club and as individual members, can make a significant and lasting impact.
 
At both a Zone 8 and District level, Domestic Violence and homelessness will be key action areas, and thus will necessitate our continuing work with ‘Goods Rescued and Re-homed’ and their extensive network to help families in need.  We will also be focusing on disadvantaged individuals and families through activities such as ‘Tree of Joy’, ARV BBQ and helping students and youth through the range of Rotary Youth programs.
There is a priority on our International Global Grant of $US50,000 and this project will provide support to construct 70 Water Tanks and 70 Toilets in Flores, Indonesia.  We are also forging ahead with ‘Teacher in a Box’ for Flores, Indonesia.
Rotary Foundation will continue to be a focus by increased Club and member contributions to support programs such as ‘End Polio Now’.
  
Process and Technology:
 
As we all know technology is just getting faster and faster and we must keep up or we will be left behind.  Therefore, I would like to make greater use of Process and Technology.
 
Using technology will help us better communicate and engage with members within the Club and communicate with the community outside the Club. Educating and upskilling Club members will help us all feel more comfortable with using technology.

Equally, the Club would not be in the position to action future plans without the hard work and commitment of Janelle and the 2022-2023 Board – so many thanks for prudent and steady leadership during the past 12 months.
 
As we look forward, let us remember the Rotary moto of ‘Service above Self’ and let us be people of action by CREATING HOPE in the WORLD that impacts positively on people’s lives and wellbeing.
