Pres. Rosemary's Report - 27 July 2020
Greetings from sunny Queensland! The power of Zoom is fantastic!
What an amazing night on Monday. We now know the family/career history of Tony Coote and we listened to a fantastic new program – Virtual Neighbour- after listening to our guest speaker Vinita Deodhar. An inspirational program and I’m sure it is one which our Community Director Colin will look into. On Saturday morning I will have our first President’s meeting with DG David Clark. It will be fascinating to see what is in store for us. I’ll report back to you on Monday. It was interesting to feel member’s views re meeting at Springwood. Please respond to Keith’s email with your thoughts. Good luck with the gardening project at Taldumunde. Keep safe, keep well, keep warm and this week keep dry. Rosemary |
Night Report - 27 July 2020
Sergeant Ros Savio welcomed President Rosemary to commence our ZOOM meeting at 7.30 pm precisely.
President Rosemary is holidaying in Maroochydore. She welcomed everyone including our guest speaker, Vinita Deodhar. Big thanks to the BBQ trailer guys who have almost completed their work on the refurbishment. Rosemary also mentioned to contact her if you have any feedback on the new club badges. Mentioned that 4 members had done the Covid Safe training. There was also discussion on next dinner meeting and Keith is to send out an email seeking feedback.
Rotary info by President Rosemary:
Holgar Knaack is new RI President. A profile was attached to meeting agenda. In brief – he is German (1st time), only been on the RI Board for one term, very keen on Youth Exchange and Rotaract. Wears Jeans!
Reports / Notices.

Member Talk
Tony Coote gave us comprehensive talk about his family, career and life. Tony was born in Tumut. Moved to Sydney when he was young because of mother’s health. Mother passed when Tony was 8. His father remarried and he was raised by step mother who he loves. Has 2 brothers. Went to Homebush Boys High and was in the rowing team. Apprenticed as an electrician, then went to Uni and obtained degree in Electrical Engineering. Had a wide and varied career including CSR, Proctor & Gamble etc. GM National Foods. Took family to USA & Philippines. Finished career as a consultant which he really enjoyed. Has 2 boys with their own families. Both work in technology. He and Glenda fostered numerous children over the years. Tony met the wonderful Glenda at Rotaract.
A very interesting and enlightening talk. Thanks.
GUEST SPEAKER
Andrew introduced our Guest speaker for the evening Vinita Deodhar.
Vinita is a member of Beecroft club and has commenced a social project “Rotary Virtual Neighbours”. Briefly the project involves members making regular contact (say 1 to 2 calls per week of 15 minutes) with elderly people who may be isolated or feel isolated. The message is that “you are not alone”. The project complements other organisation such as Meals on wheels, Red Cross etc.
This is a simple, inexpensive but high impact project which appeared to appeal to a number of our members. It is not a project just for this Covid period, but meant to be ongoing. Beecroft have been operating for approx. 2 months now and has been welcomed by the recipients. Vinita would like to see the project expanded throughout our Rotary community.
Sergeant Ros then held head and tails with the “virtual wine” won by Andrew.

BBQ Trailer Update
We’re nearly finished! Its been a big job to refurbish the trailer, interrupted by the Coronavirus, but we’re nearly there.
Last Sunday 19 July, we met at Tony Coote’s home for another working bee. Thank you, Tony Coote, Douglas Lam, David Turnbull and Tony Makin for all your work, and especially a big thank you to Glenda and Miriam for the yummy toasties’ sandwiches, mini chicken drumsticks, cakes and lots of coffee.
The main tasks were to clean, repair and paint various trailer components and then install new electrics, door seals, door locks and latches, a new wash station and a new tool box. Its starting to look good
We will meet again next Friday to finish off a few final bits and pieces and then we will take the trailer back to Ricardo’s workshop where Ricardo has volunteered to paint the underside of the trailer with a protective coating.
We will then load up the trailer with all its catering equipment, tables, marquees etc. and return it to its Galston storage ready for our next BBQ project
Thanks again for all your help.
Keep safe.

This Week's Humour
Best MatesTwo Sydney blokes grow up together, but after college one moves to Brisbane and the other to Melbourne.
They agree to meet every ten years in Sydney, NSW, to play golf and catch up with each other.
A few years later aged 32 they meet, finish their round of golf and head for lunch. "Where you wanna go?"
“Hooters" in the City
"Why Hooters?"
"They have those girls with the great shapes, the tight shorts and the gorgeous legs."
"You're on."
At age 42, they meet and play golf again. "Where you wanna go for lunch?"
“Hooters."
"Again? Why?"
"They have cold beer, big screen TVs, and side action on the games."
"OK."
At age 52 they meet and play again. "So where you wanna go for lunch?"
“Hooters.
"Why?"
"The food is pretty good and there's plenty of parking."
“OK."
At age 62 they meet again.
After a round of golf at Elanora, one says, "Where you wanna go?"
"Hooters."
"Why?"
"Chicken Wings are half price and the food isn't too spicy."
"Good choice"
At age 72 they meet again.
Once again, after a round of golf, one says, "Where shall we go for lunch?"
"Hooters."
"Why?"
"They have six handicapped parking spaces right by the door and they have senior discounts."
“Great choice."
At age 82 they meet and play again. "Where should we go for lunch?"
"Hooters."
"Why?"
"Because we've never been there before."
"Okay, that’s a great idea !”

The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.

What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
