Duty Roster
With COVID lockdowns now ending and even more restrictions being eased, effective 08/11/2021, we appreciate that many Club members may be eager to get out and about and take the chance to have a holiday. So, if you are going to be absent from meetings and events in the months up until July next year, please notify Janelle via email.
Equally now that we are back to face-to-face meetings at Springfield it’s important that we get back into the swing of advising Frank of numbers attending by the Thursday prior to Monday meetings. As per our existing RSVP procedures, if you are not attending you need to advise Ros Hogan otherwise you will be charged the cost of the meal.
Thanks for your patience and understanding with these matters – it’s all part of adjusting to life post COVID!

President Keith's Report - 23 May 2022
Some twenty Members and Guests attended our Zoom Meeting on a cold, windy night. I suspect that the weather prevented other attendees by destroying Connections.
Cathy Yu (District Manager Girl Guides) presented as a bubbly, enthused, and committed leader for the guides. Within minutes we had learnt of several projects in which we could cooperate with, or perform for, The Guides at Cherrybrook. Those that rugged up in bed or had connection issues missed out on an exceptional event. Next week is a Zoom meeting and the Guest Speaker is Gemma Sisia, who operates St Jude’s Orphanage in Tanzania. I heartily recommend attending, as the story she tells is, heart lifting. Till then, Stay Safe Keith |
The Outgoing and Incoming Board will be undertaking the Push Up Challenge. This means, that between 1-24 June they will be doing daily push-ups, sit-ups, or leg-ups to raise funds for mental health and suicide prevention. Do you think they can meet this challenge to collectively complete 3,139 push-ups in this 24-day period?? - 3,139 being the number of Australians who died by suicide in 2020. Stay tuned to watch their progress and get involved to sponsor their efforts. Who knows- you may even like to join them!!! Janelle
Hi fellow Rotarians,
It is time for you all to put your thinking caps on and nominate someone who you think would
be a worthy recipient this year for our
PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP AWARD
which will be held in first week of July. The Nominees this YEAR DO NOT have to be actual business owners. They can be the little people who work in businesses; they can be a person who volunteers their time doing good in the Community!!!
Please submit nominations to myself or any member of the Vocational Services Committee (Keith, Rosemary, Douglas, George, Bernard, Cawas for this year) so that an awardee/s can be chosen.

Alex Jugueta
At the tender age of 62, I am still active in doing what I loved to do. I never give up. I wake up at 4:20am to get ready for my gym exercise session during weekdays. I do boxing, kickboxing and high intensity training before starting my day to work. I feel dull and lousy when I don’t have the opportunity to do my morning exercise routine. During the weekend, I do bike riding with friends, gardening and house work and spending precious time with my wife. I love travelling and explore different cultures and traditions in different countries.
Being a Chartered Professional Civil Engineer, I have very demanding work. As a Senior Estimator in one of the top tier infrastructure companies in the world, I am a member of the estimating team, bidding multi billion dollar projects in Australia. It’s good to win projects and on the other hand, there are lots to learn to reflect when we are unsuccessful in winning the job.
Being happily married for 37 years to the most loving person that I know and having raised 3 children, I think I have accomplished where I need to be. I don’t consider my achievements as success in life, however, it gives me contentment and happiness. Having said that, I am ready to share my time to help others in the community when there are opportunities.
I am a mentor to young engineering professionals, exploring what they are capable of and leading them to the right career progression. Also, I am passionate about advocating the benefits of being fit and healthy living to never give up in life.

Night Report - 23 May 2022
Keith welcomed all to the meeting as David had troubles Zooming in! He congratulated the club and members for the NTA diner, the Giant Book Sale and the election BBQ otherwise known as the “Democracy Sausage.”
Carol (Membership) reported that there are potential new members and to look out for our “new member” section in the bulletin.
Tony C (Treasurer and Social) met a lady at the BBQ who was an exchange student to Korea. He thanked David and Douglas for their assistance as well as Coles West Pennant Hills. We made $1213 profit. Well done all. 30 people are visiting Mudgee and an agenda is being put together. Friendship dinners will commence around June 12 so please let Tony know if you would like to attend or host.
Foundation – members have donated $900 in memory of Stan. If you are considering a donation to Foundation, please do so within the next week (please let Tony C know)to allow contributions to be in before the end of the Rotary year.
Edwina (Vocational) reported all is getting organised for Pride of Workmanship (POW) to be held on July 4. 5 nominations have been received, David Firth is guest speaker and co-presenter, and help is at hand for choosing the menu. Edwina will be seeking names from 15 members to visit the Westmead Institute of Medical Research on Monday 25th July at 10am.
Neville (Public Image) announced we have 1,024 Facebook followers and continue to have monthly articles in the Dooral Round Up.
Rosemary (Youth) will be meeting Malaesiah whilst in Coonabarabran to meet the 4 students we are sponsoring to the Santos Science Experience. We are hosting them for 3 to 4 nights from 3-6 October so are looking for host families. There are 3 girls and 1 boy. Our Rotaract Club unfortunately looks to be folding due to lack of commitment. As Rotary Youth Exchange is recommencing soon, please consider hosting a student for 2023/24. Rosemary is on the look out for committee members to join the dynamic Youth team – please contact her to get involved.
Janelle (Club) announced rosters are out as well as the schedule of meetings. Please check the website for updates as it is very fluid.
Kerry (Bunnungs BBQ) reminded members of an upcoming BBQ on Sunday 29June at Dural.
Carol then introduced our guest speaker Cathy Yu the District Manager for our local guides unit. Cathy is a psychologist who is passionate about Girl Guides. She was born in Hong Kong and was in guides there but on her arrival in Australia was delighted to find guides here. Cathy was a junior Guide Leader for 6 years before establishing her own business when she switched to District Leader.
Cathy explained the values and program of Girl Guides noting that in many ways it is similar to Rotary. Both organisations celebrated 100 years last year.
Girl Guiding in Australia is delivered through the Australian Guide Program (AGP), which is a non-formal education program based on shared leadership and decision-making at all ages.
The AGP is facilitated by trained volunteer Leaders with a focus on programs being girl-led. This means that all the activities the girls do, from weekly Unit meetings, to camps, to expeditions and hikes, are driven by the girls themselves with input and assistance from their Leaders and planned to match the girls’ abilities.
The program is based around the seven fundamental concepts of Baden-Powell’s philosophy:
Promise and Law, Outdoors, World Guiding, Guiding Traditions, Patrol System, Leadership skills and
Service.
There are about 40 girls in the Cherrybrook unit with senior girls fundraising to attend their Jamboree in Victoria. We were invited to attend the Biggest Morning Tea on Sunday morning.
The parent support group is grateful for our help and maybe there will be a project for us in the coming Rotary year. They are interested in establishing a children’s street library.
Colin B produced a newspaper from his time at a Jamboree in 1952 about which Cathy was very excited, Rosemary mentioned the RYPEN and RYLA program for leadership training, and we all agreed it was wonderful to hear from a person who is so passionate about working with girls.
Thank you, Cathy, for opening our eyes about Guides in our local area.
President Keith thanked Cathy for being our guest speaker, he reminded us of a board meeting on Wednesday at Tony C’s home and next week’s speaker by Zoom is Gemma Sisia who established St Jude’s Orphanage in Tanzania.

2022 Trivia Night -- 20th August - To Be Updated
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 17 August 2019 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,600 all of which will go to assist drought relief. Click this link to read more. |
The Garage Sale -- TBC
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
BBQs
The club runs fund raising barbecues throughout the year, mainly at Bunnings (Dural and Thornleigh) We are also present at elections (pictured at Eurambie Park Child Care during 2021 Hills Shire local elections), local public school fêtes, fun runs, to name a few. We have a trailer that can be hired for events. For details, please click HERE. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
