Support to Lawn Bowls team from Norfolk Island

13-15 August
Our Club with the Entrance RC recently provided some assistance to three young girls from Norfolk Island Public School who came to the Central Coast to play in a NSW Combined High Schools Lawn Bowls competition held at Bateau Bay. Competing were Ellie Dixon, Maycee Deszecsar  and  Tracey Wora. who were accompanied by their mothers. Norfolk Island is an external territory some 900klm off Tweed Head with a population around 1700. We assisted with their travel costs, and with a cheer squad, Bob and Bev from our club, and Pres. Robin and Clive from Entrance RC.
The girls played well against tough competition, but didn't make the finals. One challenge they faced was the difference in the greens - this time of year the Bateau Bay greens were dormant for winter, hence a lot faster than those on Norfolk which is sub-tropical. The girls had a great experience, and it was fun to watch.

What it takes to be a Rotarian

There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club.  From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure.  The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.

  • to be invited
  • to be of a certain age
  • to be male

Must have:
  • a sense of humour
  • a willingness to give back to your community
  • a willingness to pitch in when required
  • some time available to help out on the occasional weekend event
  • an interest in the life of the West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook communities

 The Garage Sale 2018
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 13 & 14 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.

Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result.

President's Report  26th August

Tonight some 24 members and partners assembled at Springfield.  It was great to see Roma, Indira and Pamela.  We listened to Dr Clayton King give a presentation on Royal Rehab in Ryde.  I was not familiar with this facility, however, it was obvious some members had extensive knowledge.
My condolences to the Tchetchenian family on the passing of John’s Uncle.
Martha Jabour from Grace's Place has invited all Rotarians in District 9685 to the Sod Turning at Grace's Place. I have indicated to District that I will RSVP for any Club Members and Partners that wish to attend.  The event is on Saturday, 7th September from 10:00 to 12:30 at Cnr Doonside and Eastern Roads, Doonside.  If you wish to attend, can you indicate by Fri 30th August to me.
Hope to see you next week, the Guest Speaker is Brian Powyer (National Trust) who will give a presentation on Governor Arthur Phillip.

Night Report 26th August

Opening: Sgt John opened the meeting and requested Peter Stanton to propose the toast.
John then introduced President Keith Ball who welcomed all the guests for the evening.
President Keith presented his report of recent activities and thanked those who had assisted.
Keith referred to upcoming events, Saturday 7 September is the ‘sod-turning’ for Grace’s Place, the date for the movie ‘Ride like a Girl’ has yet to be confirmed
President’s Keith’s report is elsewhere in bulletin.

Director’s Reports. There were limited reports tonight as a number of our directors were not present, due to overseas travel.

Janelle Craig advised that the selection of new Rotary Shirts was underway and assistance and input was required from all members to arrive at a consensus in terms of style, colour and embellishment.
Bob Davison reported on the 3 participants from Norfolk Island in the NSW Schools Lawn Bowls competition and how they had enjoyed the experience. We may consider some more support to assist others from Norfolk Island in the future.
David Turnbull advised that the Garage sale is now only 7 weeks away and all should keep the dates of 11, 12 & 13 October free to fully participate as well as considering the 2 weeks prior to assist with collections, sorting, storage, etc. There is a committee meeting tomorrow night at Sahukar’s place.
David showed plans and reported on the submission of details to Council in reference to the proposed 2 x 40 foot containers to be located in the grounds of the old Galston Pony Club.

Guest Speaker
The guest speaker Dr. Clayton King then gave an interesting and informative talk on the Royal Rehab,
which is the rehabilitation facility at Ryde particularly for brain and spinal injury patients but also others in need of on-going rehabilitation services.  They offer in-patient and out-patient care with 36 in-patient beds, gymnasium, hydro therapy pool and all specialist facilities to assist clients to achieve full recovery and return to normal everyday living.

Sergeant  Sergeant John then proceeded to extract money from all concerned by his usual dubious means.
Peter Stanton won the raffle and Dr King won the heads and tails.

This Week's Humour

Vet Late Night Call:

A dog lover, whose female dog came "in heat," was concerned about keeping it and her male separated. But, she had a large house and she believed that she could keep the two dogs apart.

However, as she was drifting off to sleep, she heard awful howling and moaning sounds. She rushed downstairs and found the dogs locked together and unable to disengage, as frequently happens when dogs mate.

Unable to separate them; perplexed as to what to do next, although it was very late at night, she called her vet, who answered in a very grumpy voice.

After she explained the problem to him, the vet said, "Hang up the phone and place it down alongside the dogs.

I will then call you back and the noise of the ringing will make the male lose his erection and he will be able to withdraw."

"Do you think that will work?" she asked.

"Just worked for me." he replied.

Boobs VS Xmas Trees:

A family is at the dinner table and the son asks his father, "Dad, how many kinds of boobs are there.

"Well, son, a woman goes through three phases. In her 20s, a woman's breasts are like melons, round and firm. In her 30s and 40s they are like pears, still nice, hanging a bit. After 50, they are like onions."

"Onions", the son asks.

"Yes. You see them and they make you cry."

This infuriated his wife and daughter. The daughter asks "Mom, how many different kinds of willies are there?"

The mother smiles and says "Well, dear, a man also goes through three phases. In his 20s, his willy is like an oak tree, mighty and hard. In his 30s and 40s its like a birch, flexible and reliable. After his 50, it's like a Christmas tree."

"A Christmas tree?" the daughter asks.

"Yes, dead from the root up, and the balls are just for decoration."
