Duty Roster
With COVID lockdowns now ending and even more restrictions being eased, effective 08/11/2021, we appreciate that many Club members may be eager to get out and about and take the chance to have a holiday. So, if you are going to be absent from meetings and events in the months up until July next year, please notify Janelle via email.
Equally now that we are back to face-to-face meetings at Springfield it’s important that we get back into the swing of advising Frank of numbers attending by the Thursday prior to Monday meetings. As per our existing RSVP procedures, if you are not attending you need to advise Ros Hogan otherwise you will be charged the cost of the meal.
Thanks for your patience and understanding with these matters – it’s all part of adjusting to life post COVID!

President Keith's Report - 21st February 2022
It was great to see Anna Vass back in circulation.
As an INTP, I thought the INTJ character in the short video “sucked”. I admit to a “Mea Culpa” in not putting Janelle in the Run Sheet for a Member Talk. Next Monday we visit RC Epping at the Epping Pub. Note they meet at 6:00pm for 6:30pm. (Cawas is celebrating by bringing Rashna.) It should be an interesting night, with guest speaker Rob Edwards. Night Report - 21st February 2022
Everyone was delighted to see Anna Vass and Alan Paynter prior to starting the meeting having to know that they are both doing well.
Colin McGowan was the Sergeant of the night. He requested Stan Baseley to start the night with a traditional toast with each member. Stan said that he had a wonderful time during the last week’s face to face meeting and with that he was very thankful.
President’s Report:
President Keith welcomed everyone, and he said that he enjoyed the wonderful face to face meeting during last week’s Valentine day dinner. He reiterated about the combined gatherings next week with RC Epping for members who will be attending to confirm with Ros Hogan on Thursday this week. The combined Rotary Club meeting will be held at the Epping Hotel. Partners can come and they can dress up the way they wanted, either formal or whatever they like. He also mentioned that we have not secured a Guest Speaker, but alternative was suggested by John Caruana to line up a short video called “The Skill of Humor” featuring Andrew Tarvin.
Director’s Report:
David Turnbull, Max Henderson and Rosemary Clarke sent their apologies for the night.
Carol Russell reminded everyone that there is a visitor’s night organized on the 11th of April. She already had invited one of her clients and encouraged everyone to do the same by inviting who we know to join the gatherings.
Janelle Craig reported about the next Monday meeting Feb 28 with RC Epping at the Function Room of Epping Hotel. This is more on a fellowship night and there is no specific agenda to be discussed. We do need to tell Ros that we are coming during the night on Thursday. We will need to buy and pay for our own meals and drinks in the Epping Hotel, i.e. no need to prepay deposit to our funds. It is organized for 6:00PM for 6:30PM start. Carpool is suggested for there could be limited car parking available near the venue.
Tony Coote has nothing to report about financial. However, he informed every that the proposed lunch gathering on 2 March is cancelled due to some people pulling out. Cawas Sahukar suggested that because some members are still working, it will be preferable the social gatherings be a dinner rather than lunch. Tony said ‘watch this page’ for future social event gathering in the future. Also, he mentioned that we need to make use of the BBQ trailer to be shared for social event for schools, other club or maybe use for campaign trail.
Cawas Sahukar has nothing to report except reminding everyone if they want to be involved in the Clean Up Australia happening on March 6 which is a Sunday. Colin Sharpe will be the team leader during the day.
Peter Stanton has shared information about the forthcoming fundraising event on the 9th May 2022 at Doherty Community Centre, Chatswood. This is a combined Rotary Clubs fundraising dinner for International Charity: Nusa Tenggara Association (NTA).
There are five Rotary Clubs who are involved in the event: Chatswood-Roseville, West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook, Lane Cove, Northbridge and North Sydney Sunrise. The event will invite the Indonesia Business Council, Indonesia Trade Promotion, Indonesia Diaspora Network and Indonesia Restaurant Association. Everyone is encouraged to be involved and is invited to come.
Edwina Ruff has nothing to report.
Neville Hansen reported on the forthcoming book sale on 13, 14, 15 of May. He is asking for people to help to organize this on the 9th of May (?). Also he said, him and Bernard will attend the Wesley Mission function on Friday this week.

Members Talk by Janelle Craig
Janelle presented to members about her memorable adventures with her mother during her childhood. She told story about her mother having the opportunity to drive their family car on a Thursday to go shopping the whole day and have some lunch in the Auburn. She also shared her story about the elusive perfect meat pie when travelling with friends (David Turnbull and others) in different places for some years. With her experience being an academic, researcher and her passion about community involvement, she formulated the 5 main criteria to determine the ranking of the best meat pie: 1) What is the aim?, 2) the methodology, 3) the Findings, 4) Discussion and 5) Conclusion. In the end, she concluded that the best meat pie can be found in Merriwa.
President Keith concluding remarks said thank you everyone for attending and reminded that next week we are visiting RC Epping and thank Narelle and Toula (co-president) from Epping and Janelle for organizing.

Street Libraries Update
You may have noticed that street libraries are springing up in peoples’ gardens, especially if you have been doing a lot of walking as we have during the lockdown. It seems that the Board noticed too. They decided that it would be nice to have one, two, three - make it four at various locations.
A suitable design was sourced – like the one at the end of New Line Road but taller to accommodate a shelf.
Cawas provided some marine ply courtesy of mates’ rates at Bunnings and I went to Bunnings and Mitre10 about a dozen times to purchase the other bits.
So with the help of Peter and Tony we assembled the structures, I painted them and Colin Sharpe provided some polycarbonate for the windows. It took a while but they came together well.
Now we needed a post to fix them to. Bunnings had some woofy posts designed for post boxes but Mitre10 came up with galvanised beasts suitable as a foundation for a tower block.
An erection team was organised of David, George, Keith, Bob and me and we burst into action like a well oiled machine – well actually more like a council work gang with one person doing all the work and rest watching. We decided that Bev’s place was a good place to start since it is a relatively quiet street.
Bob came up with a crowbar the size of a tooth pick and we set about digging a hole in the incredibly hard ground. At about 400mm we decided to stop before we encountered a 33kV cable and set up the post in lots of rapid setting concrete.
Bev provided an excellent morning tea while we waited for the concrete to go hard.
Finally we lugged the box into place and bolted it down.
The only thing missing is the Rotary sign. This has been ordered and will be fixed later. It is large enough for the Amazon astronauts to read it on their next trip.
Colin Sharpe did a nice job of fixing his to his letter box and even painted the inside (they had already had two coats of lacquer but the paint is a nice touch and we fully expect Anne to install curtains).
Next week the council work gang is reassembling to install Carol’s library.
Thanks to the team and thanks to Bev, Carol and Colin Sharpe for providing the locations. The fourth will be fixed at the Uniting Church when Neville returns from wherever he is this week.

COVID-19: Variants & Vaccines, the Lockdown Update - YouTube
The presentation was accurate as of 9th July 2021. Some widening of the age group acceptability for the AstraZeneca vaccine have been made since that presentation date.
The 2 main speakers were Internationally renowned experts in immunology and vaccine development, Professor Tony Cunningham and Professor Sarah Palmer.
I have attached a link to that presentation. It is well worth watching.
I also took some Notes and attach for those who only wish to get a quick grab - but the notes don’t do the presentation justice.
Kind Regards
Colin McGowan

The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
