Pres. Rosemary's Report - 20 July 2020
It was with great sadness that we commenced the meeting with a minute’s silence to honour Heather Hansen, the cherished wife of Neville and devoted mother to their three children. Heather was beautiful person who added so much to our club with her kindness, thoughtfulness, and guidance especially when it came to Book Sale times. Our thoughts are with Neville and his family at this difficult time.
A donation to a cause close to Heather’s heart – The Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre at Westmead will be made on behalf of the club.( http://www.sydneywestcancer.org/make-a-donation/ ) The assembly that followed was vey useful with some good ideas to move our club along. We now have some ideas for social activities, membership, and speakers. Also , some members are doing the Covid Food training which is a bonus. But what we do need are some people to put their hands up for being the BBQ champion (when Covid allows us ), a container champion as Colin is still a working man and fundraising ideas. Please commit to helping – don’t rely on “someone” to do it. Thank you to all the members who participated and please contact me if you would like to talk about any issues. Stay safe. Stay well and stay warm! Rosemary |
Night Report - Assembly - 20 July 2020
Call To Order – Jim Simpson at 7.30 pm.
Toast proposed by Max Henderson - Rotary and to be out of the current Covid situation sooner rather than later.
Colin Mc Gowan – Advised membership of the passing of Heather Hansen and a minute’s silence was observed…. She was able to be home on her birthday recently, Heather strongly in our thoughts, she was a much loved and respected Partner in our Club.
President’s Report– refer to earlier President’s Report.
Director’s reports
Keith Ball spoke of need to source interesting speakers, asked for assistance. Who do you know?
Colin Sharpe – Community Director spoke of Coonabarabran and advised he will do a member talk shortly and update us on their visit and ongoing relationship.
The containers are now installed and ready for use. He is happy to look after them until a Fund-Raising Director appointed. Asking for ideas on goods to sell, where they might be sourced from and the process around management of such product.
Selling on MarketPlace and FB was recommended by Cawas and would entail less handling of the goods.
Covid rules and regulations would need to be strictly adhered too during this process.
Taldemunde is the next community project to be undertaken… 9 have volunteered to be involved so far. The job to hand is to clear their gardens and other jobs to be nominated.
Tony Coote. A membership Committee meeting was held last week. He noted with regards to recruiting more new members that our best means were:
- Visibility via our FB page and other publications we regularly appear in with events /other articles of interest.
- The Website
- Activities we undertake, ie Garage Sale, Book Fair etc.
- Members themselves in speaking to people they come in contact with on a daily basis.
- Business Cards and flyers.
It was noted that our next project should be to undertake a major upgrade of our Website, which has not been attended to in some time.
He requested that we all hone our “Elevator Pitch” This is a short succinct few words on what Rotary is/does so that when speaking with a potential member the message is clear.
Tony Coote - Social Committtee. Tony read out an article of interest to us all right now with Covid strongly in our lives.
Levels of Risk at present of things that we do…
Low Risk - Open mail, take away food, pump petrol, play tennis, go camping, stay home.
Low to medium Risk - Shopping, biking, golf, stay in a hotel, Visit Dr, Library, Eat Outside, walk.
Medium Risk - Dinner at home with guests, shopping, office, swim.
Medium to High risk – Hair Salon, flying, hugging, crowded places
High Risk – Buffet, gym, movies, sports stadium, church, visit a bar, shaking hands.
Against this background it is difficult to organise social events for Club as a group.
Some ideas floated – Friendship get togethers in a park, trips away in our own vehicles.
Car Rallies with BYO lunch in a park with social distancing at arrival.
Next Social club meeting Thursday 23rd to discuss options.
Janelle Craig our Youth Director.
Janelle updated us on the formation of the new Rotaract Club with the second meeting held on 14th July, 2020 at which they elected a President, Secretary and Treasurer, 15 members are needed before they Charter. A vision and potential projects being formulated.
At our Rotary meeting on 24th August Rotaract office holders to visit F2F if that is allowed at the time.
Janelle visited Coonabarabran with the intention of establishing a working relationship with the club with regards Youth matters. Eg. When exchange students are with us, the opportunity for them to visit the country for a week and for students from that area to come to Sydney to experience city life for a time. Major benefits to both clubs.
Vocational - Edwina Ruff, is new to the role and is busy helping to organise future speakers for our meetings, she asked us all to think of who we know who might be of interest to our members. Several suggested and to be followed up.
Treasurers report - Paul Laroumanie advised that our annual dues are now due and can be paid for a full year $300 or in 2 half payments the first now and the second January, 2021
Bank account details to be circulated for payments.
Rosemary, Our President then led the Assembly discussion on the following points.
1. Fundraising
With Covid we need to have a Covid trained person to enable us to do any fundraising. A Link was circulated where interested persons are able to access a short assessment to acquire accreditation in Covid matters.
The Garage Sale as we are used to, will not go ahead. We would need to follow Covid directions which would be difficult - All agreed.
Bunnings BBQ’s are beginning to happen. There are strict conditions, volunteers to organise if prepared to do so. A BBQ champion is needed.
The Containers. Colin Sharpe discussed earlier
Other ideas for fund raising in this environment to be considered, put on thinking caps!
2. New Club badges – The board has decided to go ahead with new dinner badges. Cost will come from club funds. Probably rectangular, full name and no classification
Discussion around Magnetic back… Women preferred, men liked pin/tie type – to be decided.
3….Club dues – same as last year $300 for the year, noted by Treasurer earlier.
4. Ideas for Social activities – discussed earlier by Social Director Tony Coote.
5. Ideas for guest speakers. Discussed earlier by Keith and Edwina.
6. Club goals – Rosemary advised our club goals are on Rotary Club Central and she is happy to discuss with members at any time. It was noted that we are a professional organisation and just like any such organisation we need to have goals and a vision for where we are going.
The Sergeants Session led by Jim Simpson was around True/False – thumbs up, thumbs down Won by Keith Ball. Another bottle of red for his stash!!
President Rosemary closed the meeting saying Stay Well, Stay Safe and Stay Warm.
Meeting closed at 8.45p.
Night reporter Carol Russell

BBQ Trailer Update
We’re nearly finished! Its been a big job to refurbish the trailer, interrupted by the Coronavirus, but we’re nearly there.
Last Sunday 19 July, we met at Tony Coote’s home for another working bee. Thank you, Tony Coote, Douglas Lam, David Turnbull and Tony Makin for all your work, and especially a big thank you to Glenda and Miriam for the yummy toasties’ sandwiches, mini chicken drumsticks, cakes and lots of coffee.
The main tasks were to clean, repair and paint various trailer components and then install new electrics, door seals, door locks and latches, a new wash station and a new tool box. Its starting to look good
We will meet again next Friday to finish off a few final bits and pieces and then we will take the trailer back to Ricardo’s workshop where Ricardo has volunteered to paint the underside of the trailer with a protective coating.
We will then load up the trailer with all its catering equipment, tables, marquees etc. and return it to its Galston storage ready for our next BBQ project
Thanks again for all your help.
Keep safe.

This Week's Humour
Grandfather of the Year
A woman in a supermarket is following a grandfather and his badly behaved grandson. He has his hands full with the child screaming for sweets, biscuits, and all sorts of things.
The grandfather is saying in a controlled voice: "Easy, William, we won't be long." Another outburst and she hears the grandfather calmly say, "It's okay William. Just a couple more minutes and we'll be out of here. Hang in there.”
At the checkout the little horror is throwing items out of the cart. Grandfather says again in a controlled voice, "William, relax buddy, don't get upset. We'll be home in five minutes, stay cool William."
Very impressed, the woman goes outside to where the grandfather is loading his groceries and the boy into the car. She says, "It's none of my business, but you were amazing in there. I don't know how you did it. That whole time you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying that things would be okay. William is very lucky to have you as his grandfather."
"Thanks," says the grandfather, "but I am William. This little shit’s name is Kevin.”

The Sign (Thanks, Cawas)
Back in 2005, the local Chevron gas station in Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood converted their auto repair shop into a convenience store. Their outdoor sign — once used for service promotions and store specials — became redundant with the inside of the store already plastered with signage. So the owners decided to have fun with the outdoor sign instead, and the@WallingfordSign was born. This weekly sign message has become so popular, it has become a more effective marketing tool for the gas station than anything prior.

Significant Club Fundraising Events during the year
2019 Trivia Night
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 17 August 2019 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,600 all of which will go to assist drought relief. Click this link to read more. |
The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
