President Keith's Report 20 September 2021
There were passages in the discussion led by Maggie Hamilton to which I could relate, as she incited past, hurtful memories to bubble to the surface.
Last Friday Tony and Pamela described how they measured the street library, in my street, in mobile phone lengths. Cawas has now requested Tony to produce three of these units. The Tree of Joy discussions (last Thursday) clarified several issues, and we are ready to embark on our most valuable community project. Next week we will learn about “Lift the Lid” and how Rotary is supporting mental health. If you have read the Bulletin then note that Bev is raising funds by advertising Books for sale. “COVID -19 Variants and Vaccines, the Lockdown update”
COVID-19: Variants & Vaccines, the Lockdown Update - YouTube
The presentation was accurate as of 9th July 2021. Some widening of the age group acceptability for the AstraZeneca vaccine have been made since that presentation date.
The 2 main speakers were Internationally renowned experts in immunology and vaccine development, Professor Tony Cunningham and Professor Sarah Palmer.
I have attached a link to that presentation. It is well worth watching.
I also took some Notes and attach for those who only wish to get a quick grab - but the notes don’t do the presentation justice.
Kind Regards
Colin McGowan

Hi All Members.
We are not the only travellers planning to get home. We had Happy Hour with two couples from Tasmania last night plus they have two friends who altogether are planning on getting home to Tassie. They have applied for a Victorian border pass which gives them 24 hours from crossing the border to arrive at the ferry terminal in Melbourne otherwise they have to go into quarantine. Another Tassie traveller in Queensland returning home had to divert into Northern Territory then to South Australia and then make a run for the Ferry.
That prevented them from being put into quarantine in the eastern states.
Cheers. Howard and Megan.

Humour of the week
An old Italian gentleman lived alone in Dural. He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, as the ground was hard. His only son, Mario, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament.
"Dear Mario, I am pretty sad because it looks like I won't be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old days. Love, Papa."
A few days later, he received a letter from his son.
"Dear Papa, Don't dig up that garden. That's where the bodies are buried. Love, Mario"
At 4 am next morning, the police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. That same day, the old man received another letter from this son.
"Dear Papa, Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That's the best I could do under the circumstances. Love you, Mario"

We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.

What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
