President Keith's Report 19 July 2021
Tonight, Harold Sharp gave an excellent preview of Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC). I did not fully understand the impact of Covid19 on this program. I have now received a copy of the presentation and it is available for anyone to watch.
We have invited DG Lindsay, Past DG David and last year’s AG Robert Erskine to the Changeover on 2nd August. Both David and Robert have indicated they will attend. Lindsay is yet to respond.
I highly recommend the Rotary Leadership Institute Course. Alternate courses are available Face to Face and via Zoom. The Club will pay Course Fees for any member who wishes to attend. The next two courses are as scheduled:

Night Report - 19 July 2021
Our Zoom meeting, ably led by Sergeant Ros Savio, was attended by 29 people including Alex Jugueta, our friend Barry Freeman, Kaye Carter from Pennant Hills club and our guest speaker Harold Sharp and wife Gina both previous District Governors. It was also lovely to see John Caruana tuning in from Victoria.
David Turnbull proposed a toast to Australia, Rotary and our Olympic Athletes in Tokyo to focus on something positive.
Keith welcomed everyone especially our guest speaker Harold. He announced that we will have a full-blown Changeover on Monday August 2 with recognition, awards etc from Rosemary with Keith’s induction. District VIP’s will be invited, and we hope everyone will Zoom in!
Here are our Directors reports:
Foundation – David – Peter has lodged a grant for $6000 for NTA. The District has $113,000 available but $160,000 has been lodged so we will have to see if we are successful.
Membership/Public Image – Carol – seeking ideas for next Dooral Round Up
Fundraising – Max – Sept 18th is set for our Trivia Night – Covid permitting
Community – Cawas – no update
Vocational- Edwina – no updates
Youth – Rosemary – applications for RYLA will be open soon so thinking hats on, “GP’s in Schools” program was well received by the club, Cherrybrook Technology High School is booked in for October so maybe a small sponsorship may be possible.
Treasurer – Tony C – thanks to Paul for an easy handover, refunds for SYMT and changeover dinner have been done – please contact Tony if you have not received yours, as a club we need to live within our means, no need to increase fees now, 75% of the club has paid their dues, thanks to Bob D for helping with all the payments
Social – Tony C – Tuesday 27th July is Zoom committee meeting, Friendship meals on weekend of 14/15 August please let Tony know if you want to be included
David then introduced Harold Sharp from ROMAC – Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children. We viewed a video outlining the mission, objectives, and information about the program. The conjoint twin girls who were the first patients from PNG are now 23 and both have just graduated from Uni. Harold stressed that the program consists of Rotary volunteers and each child’s health program costs between $50,000 – $60,000 as only the surgeons volunteer their time. Covid has resulted in little income and only a few children, but hopefully within the next couple of months this will change. Donations are always welcome. Check the website.
Our sergeant Ros conducted Heads and Tails won by Ros Hogan with the promise of a bottle of wine.
Our President Keith closed the meeting with thanks to our guest speaker Harold. Our next Zoom meeting has Faye Kitto from Carlingford club speaking about “Day for Girls” program. Best wishes to Peter for his spinal surgery.
Colin Baxter has oranges to give away. Please contact him prior and he will leave them at the gate. Thanks Colin.

R100 Garden
Three months have passed since the formal “opening “ of our R100 garden at the RFS/Girl Guide site. With some tender love from Anne and Tim Sharpe who covered the garden with leaf mulch and Rosemary who often weeds it on her local walks, it is flourishing.
Every plant is doing well, the DG’s plant is flowering along with several others. When you are in the area pop in to check up on it. It adds to the attractiveness of Cherrybrook.

“COVID -19 Variants and Vaccines, the Lockdown update”
COVID-19: Variants & Vaccines, the Lockdown Update - YouTube
The presentation was accurate as of 9th July 2021. Some widening of the age group acceptability for the AstraZeneca vaccine have been made since that presentation date.
The 2 main speakers were Internationally renowned experts in immunology and vaccine development, Professor Tony Cunningham and Professor Sarah Palmer.
I have attached a link to that presentation. It is well worth watching.
I also took some Notes and attach for those who only wish to get a quick grab - but the notes don’t do the presentation justice.
Kind Regards
Colin McGowan

Sydney Rowing Club Lunch 20 June
26 members and Partners spent a relaxing lunch at Watergrill at Sydney Rowing Club on Sunday. The rain held off (mostly) so most of us took the ferry from Rydalmere to Abbotsford. Its an interesting trip and a bit different arriving by boat. The food was good, the grog was on the expensive side, but overall it was fun and we would certainly go back. A special welcome to Alex and Jocelyn, who fitted into the group very well.

Welfare Report
Peter Cleary is travelling well and is expecting to get the all clear from his kidney specialist in the next week or so. This will then clear the way for his gall bladder extraction in the next 2/3 months.
Steve baker is responding well to treatment and is hoping to join us in a zoom meeting in the next month. He has received a positive report from his specialist and is optimistic that he will have a full recovery.
Ros Bushell is to begin chemotherapy shortly. She is out of the wheelchair and accompanies Dick on short walks and they are maintaining a positive outlook. Dick is very appreciative of the concern shown by club members.
Peter Stanton has started the recovery process from his spinal surgery held on Monday.

Humour of the week
The Grim Reaper came for me last night, and I beat him off with a vacuum cleaner. Talk about Dyson with death.
I went to the cemetery yesterday to lay some flowers on a grave. As I was standing there I noticed 4 grave diggers walking about with a coffin.3 hours later and they're still walking about with it. I thought to myself, they've lost the plot!!
My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to our local pet shop and they were $70!! Blow this, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web.
I start a new job in Seoul next week. I thought it was a good Korea move.
Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarfs are not Happy.
My neighbour knocked on my door at 2:30am this morning, can you believe that, 2:30am?! Luckily for him I was still up playing my Bagpipes.
Paddy says "Mick, I'm thinking of buying a Labrador ."Blow that" says Mick "have you seen how many of their owners go blind?"
My girlfriend thinks that I'm a stalker. Well, she's not exactly my girlfriend yet.

The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 17 August 2019 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,600 all of which will go to assist drought relief. Click this link to read more. |
The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
