Ronald McDonald "Meals from the Heart" |
Tuesday 30 July |
Eleven Rotarians did a BBQ lunch for well over 100 residents of Ronald McDonald House at Westmead on Tues 30th. It started with an overview of the house, and a short video that showed how the residents really appreciated the support that they got from the house and those who helped easing their life with events like "Meals from the Heart".
We prepared and served chicken, beef and vegetarian hamburgers, as well as all the salads that go with them. All of the group was able to go and eat their lunch with residents of the house which is an important part of the day for all parties. We all had a great day as the workload was busy, but we were able to have great fellowship during the preparation and clean
up. We finished well before 2pm.
On the day as well as 8 members of our club we had assistance from Mohita (a neighbour of Ross and Helen) and 2 of her friends Rubani and Anchal. After today's positive experience where they had made a contribution to the Ronald McDonald community, they would like to do another BBQ with their friends. They all took a day of holidays from their work to come and assist.

What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.

The Garage Sale 2018
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 13 & 14 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |

President's Report 12th August
Tonight a group of 19 from the Club attended RC Beecroft at PH Bowling Club. RC North Rocks and RC Pennant Hills were also in attendance. Together we listened to a presentation from Dominic Perrottet on how to assist people in the community.
Beecroft held a Book Sale last weekend and the distribution of some books to members was interesting to watch. Mark Anderson made a plea for support of Train Ride to End Polio on 24th October. I had previously agreed to for our Club to partner RC Beecroft in showing the film Ride Like a Girl. Johanna indicated that the date is proposed for Saturday, 14th September. (Please note “proposed” as no firm negotiation is yet to occur with Events Cinema - Castle Hill) The concept is that the cinema charge Rotary $10 pp and we charge Members, Partners and others a higher amount. I have suggested $30 pp. The plan is to sell 100 tickets and donate the profit to Foundation. This coming Saturday 17th is Trivia Night at Cherrybrook Community Centre. Come along and help us raise monies for Drought Relief. As is custom there is no meeting on Monday 19th. Rotary Rocks Keith |
Night Report 12th August
This meeting was organised by RC Beecroft who invited our local MP Dominic Perrottet - Member for Epping, Treasurer Member of the Liberal Party
Mark Anderson did the introductions, and toasted the Rotary Club of Melbourne, chartered in 1921.
He also welcomed the Rotary Club of North Rocks, and all clubs present.
Our Club had 19 attend, including 4 partners. Due to the format of the meeting, there was no club specific news.
A member of Beecroft Club then presented on "Who are We" (Rotarians), and continued to present the projects that Beecroft are working on in the different areas of service. I believe this was for Dominic's benefit, so he better understands Rotary.
Dominic spoke to the meeting next, to enable him to depart early for his other commitments. He gave some of his background. He lives in this area, it's where he grew up. He is a family man.
He said that NSW state is investing in infrastructure: transport, health and youth.
Treasury needs to rethink how it measures success - on the size of the spend, not the outcomes.
Behind the numbers are people - even the smallest of projects can significantly impact peoples lives.
He has always had great respect for Rotary. The Govt can't legislate culture, but provide support.
Then he gave some anecdotal stories. There was time for two questions from the floor.
Beecroft RC discussed some Rotary business:
All Stations Challenge: in 1 day they will visit all 187 stations, including the new Metro. Last year they raised $250K (X3 with Gates Foundation contribution). This year they are targetting $333k X 3 = $1m
Greg discussed the success of their recent book fair, raising $20k. There were some interesting books left over, which were presented to Club members.
Run Like a Girl movie was discussed (see separate news item in Bulletin)
A raffle was held with 4 different prizes (unfortunately none of our Club won :( )

This Week's Humour
Power Outage:
We had a power outage at my house this morning and my PC, laptop, TV, DVD,
iPad & my new surround sound music system were all shut down.
Then I discovered that my iPhone battery was flat and to top it off it was
raining outside, so I couldn't play golf.
I went into the kitchen to make coffee and then I remembered that this
also needs power, so I sat and talked with my wife for a few hours.
She seems like a nice person.

Why Some Men Have Dogs And Not Wives:
1. The later you are, the more excited your dogs are to see you.
2. Dogs don't notice if you call them by another dog's name.
3. Dogs like it if you leave a lot of things on the floor.
4. A dog's parents never visit.
5. Dogs agree that you have to raise your voice to get your point across.
6. You never have to wait for a dog; they're ready to go 24 hours a day.
7. Dogs find you amusing when you're drunk.
8. Dogs like to go hunting and fishing.
9. A dog will not wake you up at night to ask, "If I died, would you get
another dog?"
10. If a dog smells another dog on you, they don't get mad. They just think
it's interesting.
11. Dogs like to ride in the back of a pickup truck.
And last, but not least:
12. If a dog leaves, it won't take half of your stuff.
