Pres. Rosemary's Report - 16 November 2020
Yeah!!! We had our first Face to Face meeting on Monday and the buzz in the room was amazing! Everyone was so happy to be meeting again even with Covid restrictions. It only took 9 months!! We welcomed Ross and Helen Ballinger, Tom Westcott and Annette, Ros Hogan, Bob Whyms and Jason Terry plus 10 partners.
Both Ross and Tom were made honorary members of our club – a well-deserved recognition. Steve Wagner informed us of his work in the National Parks and Wildlife particularly in the Sydney region. The sad facts and figures from last summer’s bush fires will be with us for a while. Douglas pleaded for people to respond to emails and I concur with him. If an email is sent, please respond either with a yay or a nay. It is common manners. Please remember the Trees of Joy in Cherrybrook Village and Westleigh Village and thanks to all those who are collecting gifts. Our next face to face meeting is our annual Youth night. It is promising to be a great night with 20 guests so far! Katherine, our Youth Exchange student, has returned from Austria and we look forward to hearing of her exploits. We will also have an opportunity to meet some members of the Provisional Rotaract club of Pennant Hills – Cherrybrook as well as out RYPEN student. Our Christmas meeting is on Monday 14 December so please let Tony Cote know if you will attend. We need numbers before we can commit to this fun event. Next week 23 November will be our usual Zoom meeting at 7:30pm. Until then, stay safe, stay healthy and enjoy the lead up to Christmas. Rosemary |
Night Report - 16 November 2020
- Max Henderson called the meeting to order at 7.10pm. The delay could be attributed to the fact we were meeting face to face for the first time since March and recognition of members was a bit of a challenge. He reminded members of the need to be COVID compliant
- Bob Davison proposed the toast to Australia, Rotary and those who are working on production of a COVID 19 vaccine
- President Rosemary welcomed all including guests Ros Hogan, Bob Whyms, Jason Terry and mentioned this was the first meeting our newest member, Anna Vaas, had attended face to face. Partners were also welcomed along with Tom and Annette Westcott and Ross and Helen Ballinger (see later)
- President Rosemary’s Rotary fact was that October 24th was World Polio Day and she mentioned the wonderful work Rotary has done in working towards eradication of this insidious disease
- Tony Coote, Social, advised Friendship Lunches were proceeding well; please advise him by this Friday if you will be attending Kris Kringle; the car rally will be held on Sunday 29th November, Alan Paynter will be sending an email with details so please respond if you will be attending; Saturday 23rd January 2021 will be the President’s Lunch at Chateau Rosemary, more details to follow
- Wearing his Membership hat Tony advised there will be a new run of business cards so please let him know if you need any more
- Peter Stanton, International, gave an update on the NTA project in East Timor including how they are dealing with the challenges of COVID. He advised the Board had approved a donation of $3000 which will be included with a similar amount from Lane Cove Rotary and therefore qualify for a District Grant of $6000 resulting in a total of $12000 being given
- Community - in Colin Sharpe’s absence Rosemary advised the Tree of Joy at Westleigh was going well and the Tree Wall at Cherrybrook had now started. Tuesday 15th December is sorting day but unlike previous years it will be held in multiple locations. Between $6000 and $7000 has been raised from the sale of masks. Stan basely advised that Inner Wheel had donated 19 Pamper Packs for Coonabarrabran
- Carol Russell provided a description of her role as Club Image Director and mentioned The Dooral Roundup as a publication that gives us plenty of coverage and made particular reference to the recognition of those businesses that remained open during the COVID challenges
- Douglas Lam, Club Service, asked members to respond to emails indicating whether or not they are available for service activities – both positive and negative responses are required. He advised he recently sent 40 emails and only received 6 responses. [This is a simple courtesy and we should all be able to assist Douglas in this – I am as guilty as anyone]. Next Bunnings Barbecues are on the 28th November and 13th December
- Jason Terry, Rotoract President, invited members to the Rotoract Christmas Party to be held at the Pennant Hills Hotel on 1st December starting 7pm. Please let him know if you will be attending
In recognition of their contribution to the Club over many years, on behalf of the Club, President Rosemary presented Honorary Memberships to Tom Westcott and Ross Ballinger. Neville spoke to Tom’s membership and reminded us of the contribution Tom has made in particular regarding the Garage Sale and it’s fair to say the Sale would not have been as successful without Tom’s input both physically and conceptually.
Tony Makin spoke regarding Ross and reminded members of Ross’s many Directorships in the club, including President, and of his contribution as the club’s historian – a role he seems to be wanting to pass on to someone else.
Both Tom and Ross are multiple Paul Harris Fellows and have provided great service to this club and Rotary in general. It was fitting that Annette and Helen were included because we all know it can’t be done without the support of our partners.
Guest Speaker
Our Guest Speaker, Steve Wagner from the National Parks and Wildlife Service was introduced by Tony Coote.
- Steve escorts visitors to National Parks on walks and tracks explaining all about the flora and fauna
- He mentioned how popular these activities were, particularly with school students
- National Parks cover some 10% of NSW and during the recent fires approximately 37% of national parks were burnt out
- The fires were fierce with an estimated temperature of 3700 degrees C being recorded in the heart of the Wollemi fire
- Fires of that intensity burn approx. 1 metre under the ground meaning there is no seed left for regeneration
- Given the number of national parks surrounding Sydney we were lucky the fires didn’t come into the greater metropolitan area
- The parks have remained open during the COVID crisis and this has been beneficial for the wellbeing of the parks as people visit but cannot camp overnight. It has also helped to keep people moving, ie healthy
- Native animals suffered greatly during the fires with the koala population dropping from an estimated 2 million to 30000. He mentioned that the much maligned flying fox is the great pollinator of the forests and its population was also severly diminished by the fires
- Of course 12 months of drought preceded the fires which contributed to their being so intense and destructive
- National Park rangers teach school children about the land and how to survive using aboriginal knowledge. He commented that many young children are scared of the bush, never having been out of the city
- President Rosemary reminded members about the Youth Night on the 30th November and mentioned 20 visitors were already attending
- Our next meeting on the 23rd will be via Zoom

The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
