Pres. Rosemary's Report - 7 September 2020
After hearing Dr Rowena Morris, a National Park Ranger as our guest speaker, we all want to go to Dharawal National Park and 5 Islands Native Reserve. It was wonderful to see and hear someone so passionate about the environment and conservation. Thank you, Rowena – I have a feeling we will be hearing from you again! The 28 members present voted to keep Zooming in October rather than meet at Springfield. Maybe we’ll get there in November! Thank you to all those involved with the mask sales. A little money coming into the club helps to pay for those programs that are going to happen such as RYPEN (Rotary Program of Enrichment) for Year 10 leadership opportunities. Plus, it gives the club some much needed social outlet during this pandemic. If you have not done so, please let me know if you would like to be involved. Also, a huge thank you to Alan Paynter for organising our car run for Sunday. A little challenging but Alan has covered it all well. Don’t forget to let Alan know if you will be participating. Remember we will be having 2 member talks next Monday. Colin Sharpe about the latest Coonabarabran visit and Angelo with little known facts about Pompeii. Should be an interesting meeting. A reminder that our Sept 28 meeting is with our District Governor David Clark. Have a great week everyone and I look forward to seeing you on Sunday. Rosemary |
Night Report - 14 September 2020
Sgt Jim called the meeting to order welcoming all the Rotarians.
Edwina raised a Toast.
Welcome by President Rosemary - report from Board meeting. Need to poll members for at Springfield in October or to continue with Zoom meetings. Colin Sharpe & Janelle are going to apply for a generator using a grant from The Centre for Volunteering.
Keith has kindly agreed to take over President’s responsibilities from October 15 to November 6 whilst Pres. Rosemary I will be doing the Darling River Run with limited WIFI.
Thanks to Allan for organising the car run.
We did a great job on sale of masks.
Great news about End Polio in Africa no new case for last 4 years. We still have 2 countries Afghanistan & Pakistan to reach the goal of Polio free world.
World Polio Day 24th October.
Director’s Reports
Guest Speaker - Dr Rowena Morris
A Day in the life of a Ranger - NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service
What do Rangers Do?
Fire & Incident Management - we try to be proactive for hazard reduction burning. We have 1067 trained firefighters with 80% having more than 5 years experience. 2019/20 was a very challenging year with the bushfires.
Conservation - Wollemi Pines we managed to save them and we are super proud of them. We also save whales & tiger sharks. We also work with seals and their numbers are growing. We also do a lot of rehabilitation work such as Five Islands Nature Park.
Pest & Weed Management - lot of time is spent on culling weeds. It’s not your average weeding program we also use helicopters for spraying. We also take care of the seabirds. They only lay one egg in the whole year.
Cultural Values & Planning - Big Island viewing platform it’s very stunning. One has to experience the sounds and the smells.
Asset management
Community engagement - managing our parks Dharawal National Park
Administration - lot of our work involves administration which can be boring.
Unfortunately, I must say that as a night reporter I could not do justice to the presentation it was riveting and fascinating.
Instead of Heads & Tails Sargent Jim had a quiz competition which was won by Janelle.

Etiquette for zoom meetings
Best Practice Suggestions:
Invest in a high-quality headset and webcam. Most laptops now include these, but for those with dated equipment, this purchase is a must.
Internet - minimum suggested speeds are 20 mbs/download, and 10 mbs/upload.
Present yourself positioned in front of a professional environment, free of distractions, with adequate foreground lighting and minimum background lighting to ensure a visible face to the camera.
Webcam zoom. Ideally, project your face and upper body; no more and no less.
“Can you hear me?” Members are encouraged to avoid the temptation to begin their speaking portion with a question, such as “Can you hear me?” – assume you can be heard.
Sit still when your camera is on…. People moving around consistently is distracting to others especially when someone is speaking.
Have audio on only during speaking portions. In order to minimise distractions, please mute yourself during your non-speaking portions. Your mic should be activated (located in the bottom part of your screen when in the meeting) as soon as your turn begins.
o Pro-tip. Using the space bar acts as a mic-open button. Start with your mic muted, pressing and holding the space bar opens your mic. Releasing the space bar closes your mic.
Cheers. Carol.

The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
