Pres. Rosemary's Report - 13 July 2020
Welcome to the new Rotary year. It was a wonderful night to be Zooming considering the wild weather.
Committees are getting together to plan activities for the year. Keep an eye out for emails. We learnt a lot about Alan Paynter’s life. Our member talks certainly are interesting A great way to start the year with the dynamic Nadia Messiah discussing wills and documents. Next week we are having an Assembly and topics for discussion should be emailed early on Sunday. I encourage all to read and think of some discussion points. Stay safe. Stay well and stay warm! Night Report - 13 July 2020
MColin McGowan – tonight’s Sergeant, welcomes our 2020/21 President, Rosemary 2, to our first meeting of the new Rotary year.

President Rosemary – Welcome and I hope you enjoyed the different Changeover via Zoom. Committees are beginning to meet which is great and we are trying to do as much as we can COVID permitting. There is an Assembly next week, Monday 20 July.
On Friday 10th July, it was Heather Hanson’s birthday who was as home to celebrate with her family on a day pass. The Rotary club forwarded her a birthday card.
There is a group of 9 going up to Coonabarabran on the 16th July for a few days and having a morning tea with Marie Knight, the lady that started the lamb jumper drive.
On Friday 10 July, at 1200 the Rotary Centenary Batton was launched in Canberra via Zoom and David Hurley talked about the 100 years of Rotary service in Australia. The talk went for 1 hour, mentioning UNICEF and vaccinations. WPH & Cherrybrook have to order our own Baton.
Janelle and myself are joining a Rotaract meeting.

Keith Ball - we still desperately need guest speakers, so please look around and advise Kerry if you have anyone interested.
Colin Sharpe - A group worked at the containers putting up shelving which now looks very good, so we need good quality goods to fill up the shelves. I have sent out an email to see who can assist with some work at Taldumandi, Pennant Hills on Friday morning 31 July, so please let Cawas know and he will then send out the details of when, where, time etc.
Tony Makin - advises that the whole club still has valid ‘working with children’ permits, but will forward a list.
Tony Coote - Thursday night 16 July Membership Committee meeting on Zoom and Thursday night, 23 July there will be a Social meeting via Zoom, to see how we can build fellowship within small group activities.
Alan Paynter - tonight’s Member Talk
I grew up in Bexley North - St George area and was a member of Cronulla Surf Club.. in boat crew. I attended St George Tech.
I had 1 brother , John died at 37
Very lucky meeting Lyn and then married Lyn in 1965
We have 2 daughters, Julie 52 and Janene 49 both married.
So now I have 5 Grandchildren, 4 boys and 1 girl ranging in ages from 25 to 18, with grandsons already married.
During my plumbing apprenticeship, which was five years, I did a lot of weekend work for myself.
Started in business in February 1966 when I was 23, 1 week before the start of decimal currency.
Designed and built my 1st home 1 year later in Carlingford.
After 2 or 3 years doing general plumbing decided to specialise in Bathroom Renovations
Gained full Builders Licence in approx.1969.
Built two more houses in the mountains, to keep my employees busy in quiet times.
Moved to West Pennant Hills in 1982 . Into a house I also designed and built.
In 2013 we moved to Kellyville. to a house built by Billyard Homes.
Employed approx 6 to 8 people on wages plus several sub-contractors, working mainly in North Shore area.
I was a Member of Master Plumbers Association of N.S.W.
Serving on the Executive committee of 13 years, all voluntary and was President in 1980.
We staged 1st World Plumbing Conference in 1985 in Sydney.
In 1987 Lyn and I travelled to London to attend 2nd World Conference.
They had a special concert at the Barbican Centre and a fireworks display on the Thames for half an hour, with traffic on the river stopped. The Conference is still held Biannually.
I joined Rotary 8th May 1987 as a Charter Member. Howard Fleming and I are the last two Charter Members left.
I have held positions in most committees
When David Turnbull joined our club, we discovered we were on stage at the same time at a St George Tech. Prize giving night. Many years ago.
I was President of this WPH Club in 1996 and we had 45 members.
Our Club organised the open day for the opening of the M2 in 1997 which raised $36,000 with some assistance from other local clubs.
One of our larger activities in my Presidential year was the Annual BBQ for the Wheelchair Sports Assn. held at Daws Point on Australia Day. A Big event. Up at 3 am, collect supplies, trading by 6am, mobile cool room, tents, and tarps etc. An activity we did for many years.
I sold my business and retired November 1996 due to some health problems, now resolved.
Joined MG Car Club in 2000 Classic 1954 TF MG , Red . Won National Concourse Championship, twice. Then sold the car 3 years ago. I Still have a 2003 MG. Last of British made MG cars. Lots of runs.
I am a member of Probus Oakhill Dural and I head up one of their Garden groups.
We have done lots of Overseas travel for the last 20 years or so. Our 1st cruise was on the old Oronsay in 1974 with our kids 3 and 6 years old.
Our last cruise was on Ruby Princess earlier this year. We have done over 36 cruises. Perhaps no more and currently enjoying good health.
Still enjoying Rotary and the friendships we have made.

Colin Baxter - Introduced our guest speaker - Nadia Messiha, the Principal Director of Hills Family Lawyers - Nadia Messiha is a Hills local who has been in the legal industry for over 19 years and a practicing lawyer for 12. A mother, daughter and sister, she understands the importance of having estate planning documents well in order, to protect family and loved ones.
Therefore you will need a WILL only if you have, any assets, including shares, property, savings, goodwill, heirlooms and investments.
Intestacy laws hierarchy:
1. Spouse to Spouse
2. Issue (children and grandchildren)
3. Parents,
4. Brothers and sisters,
5. Deceased siblings issues
6. Grandparents
7.. Uncles and Aunts
8. Cousins
9. The Government
Legal fees come out of the Estate.
Step 1 - Appoint a Trustee (remember TRUST is a big part of the word trustee), Pick someone who you can trust and is good with money, and is fair, because they will, manage the Estate, prepare the paperwork, make the decisions on whether to buy/sell/invest/re-invest all or part of the Estate, and they will Manage the Estate on behalf of any children under 18 years of age.
Step 2 - Appoint a Guardian, for any children
Step 3 - List the Beneficiaries - those who benefit from the Estate
Ensure clarity of power by listing who do you want to benefit, step children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, adopted children.
Consider a testamentary trust when, an adult child has an addiction, or a child or adult have a disability, any large family business, or if there are many assets that you may seek a tax solution.
Nope is not covered by your Will UNLESS, you specifically inform your Trustee. It is completely up to the trustee to decide how it is distributed, binding nominations are only valid for 3 years, and to bring under the umbrella of your Will – nominate the beneficiary as your ‘Personal Legal Representative.
Step 4 - Power of Attorney -This is the authority for someone to manage finances in the event of your loss of mental capacity (i.e. coma, dementia, Alzheimer’s).
So someone you trust can speak to banks, sell property, pay bonds, seek pensions etc.
This needs to be done before the loss of mental capacity other wise family members will need to seek appointment from a Guardianship Tribunal.
Step 6 - Enduring Power of Attorney - Same as above however this authorises for someone to make medical decisions in the event of loss of mental capacity (i.e. coma, dementia, Alzheimer’s)
Both of these can be organised by your Solicitor.
You may wish to obtain ‘A non-legal, non binding document’ outlining your wishes, so family members know shat your wishes are regarding palliative care, location, views on life support, views on body / organ donation, (although this is best to register this online via the Organ register). Again this needs to be done before loss of mental capacity, otherwise family members will not know.
Think about it – if the worst was to happy would your family know where to start, who to contact, what to do or where you papers are kept.

This Week's Humour
A Peaceful Retirement
A retired man purchased a home near a high school. He spent the first few weeks of his retirement in peace, then the new school year began.
One afternoon early into the first semester, three loud young boys came down his street, beating merrily on every bin they came across. They then did so the following day and the day after that, until finally the retiree decided it was time to take some action.
The next afternoon, he walked out to meet the boys as they banged their way down the street. Stopping them, he said: “You kids are a lot of fun. I used to do the same thing when I was your age. Will you do me a favour? I’ll give you each a dollar if you’ll promise to come around every day and do your thing”.
The boys were more than happy and continued to bang the bins. After a few days, the old man greeted the kids again, but this time he had a sad smile on his face.
“This recession’s really putting a big dent in my income,” he told them. “I’m going to have to cut it down to 50 cents a day to keep banging the bins.” The kids were obviously unimpressed but they accepted the reduction in payment and continued their afternoon activities.
A few days later, the man approached them again. “Look,” he said, “I haven’t received my payment yet, so I’m not going to be able to give you more than 25 cents. Will that be okay?”
“That’s it?” the ‘drum leader’ exclaimed. “If you think we’re going to waste our time beating these around for 25 cents each a day, you’re nuts! No way, mister. We quit!”
And the man enjoyed peace and serenity for the rest of his days.

Significant Club Fundraising Events during the year
2019 Trivia Night
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 17 August 2019 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,600 all of which will go to assist drought relief. Click this link to read more. |
The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
