Night Report - 10 May 2021
Janelle Craig, the Sergeant for the evening called us to order and pounced on Colin McGowan to propose a toast…. To Rotary, and to the Covid Pro-Jabbers.!! Janelle then handed over to President Rosemary who has been away for a few weeks, and firstly thanked Keith for “minding the ship” whilst she was away. See Presidents report for all her news.

We then heard from our Guest Speaker for the evening Anne McDonald, a lawyer who spoke to us at length on the matters of Wills, and all matters relating to our final wishes, and the importance of always keeping our Wills up to date by regularly reviewing them… say every 5 - 10 years. Much can change in a family’s life in that period of time. Powers of Attorney (General and Enduring Powers of Attorney) when we appoint another person to act on our behalf with respect to money, shares, real property i.e. only for legal/financial matters. Enduring Guardianship – when we appoint someone (usually someone else ie a close family member) for medical reasons, including what medical treatment you receive, what support services the person has whilst still at home or where they should live eg nursing home. An Enduring Guardian can also make end of life decisions such as “turning off the machine”. An Advanced Care Directive or Living Will. This document determines what care a person wants if unable to make such decisions themselves when they are seriously ill. Can only be made when in good mental health and cannot be overruled by anyone. She recommended that we always appoint these people well before they are required as once mental capacity is lost, it is too late then, and also the importance of keeping these documents updated was also reinforced. It is also recommended that the Original Will always be kept where it is safe and also where others know it is kept.

anelle then conducted a thought provoking session on the political scene in Australia since yesterday, Mothers Day 9th May was 120 years since the formation of parliament in Australia. After Janelle ran out of questions, it was decided that Jim was the winner.!!!
President Rosemary implored everyone to nominate themselves on a committee for next year, in an area of interest to each of us. She also reminded us to register for the next meeting on Monday 17th which is a Face to Face at Springfield bearing in mind minimum numbers required to maintain our place at the venue.
Board meeting is on 12th May at Tony Coote’s residence.
The meeting closed at 8.30 ish!!!

- Colin Sharpe - community Books and Tools still coming into storage at Galston for sale at some time in the future. Next Book Sale 12th June, 2021.
- Neville Hansen advised that the Bain Maree had been sold. Also a chair donated by Carol
- Peter Stanton – International The May Newsletter from Timor Leste received and is below in the bulletin. Interesting reading.
- Edwina Ruff- Vocational.. Pride of Workmanship being organised now, Letters being sent out to Councillors, Plaques being organised.
- Tony Coote – Social Committee – Hunter Valley Trip all organised and closed off now. Rowing club lunch. Tony asked us all to contribute $10 to the club general account as a commitment fee that those who say they will attend, actually do so. July – a new round of friendship dinners to be scheduled.
- Carol Russell – Public Image… thanked everyone for stepping up during a time of excessive workload when she is unable to give normal commitment to Rotary.
- David Turnbull – Foundation - It was noted that everyone enjoyed the guest speaker of the week before when the Principal of the West Pennant Hills Primary School was our Guest speaker.
- Janelle Craig – Youth. Harrison our RYPEN representative had spoken at the last meeting at Springfield and he hoped to take all he had learned into a leadership role in Cherrybrook Tech High. The Science Expo has been renamed the Santos Science Expo for years 9 and 10, and was over 3 days in July 7 – 9 th at Macquarie/UTS and UNSW. It is hoped that this can be in conjunction with Coonabarabran club, further discussion at the Board meeting on 12th May.
- Kerry Mann noted that the next BBQ is one 22nd May at Bunnings at Dural.

“The Addams Family” presented by Sydney Youth Musical Theatre at Hornsby RSL Club, 7:30pm on Friday 9 July 2021 Tickets $37.00.
The Addams Family have lived in their unique values for hundreds of years; however, the family encounters an unforeseen obstacle when Wednesday, now eighteen years old, decides to introduce her new “normal” boyfriend, Lucas Beineke, to the family. Wednesday has found herself experiencing a surprising new sensation, one that frightens both her and her family; she has fallen in love. In protest, Uncle Fester enlists the help of the Addam’s ancestors to call an end to the young budding romance. Morticia, Gomez and Pugsley worry about her changing ways. As the Addams and Beinekes come together for dinner one fateful evening, chaos ensues, and the two families find themselves admitting deep secrets and come together in ways they never would have imagined. The Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations: change. Guests welcome, eg grandchildren. As with previous productions the suggestion is we dine in the bistro prior to the show, say 6.00pm. The Book Sale March 2020
As the result of a lot of hard work the March Book Sale was a great success, especially from the organisers Andrew Little, Max Henderson, Neville Hansen and Rosemary Clarke. Funds raised exceeded $15,000. Well done.

2019 Trivia Night
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 17 August 2019 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,600 all of which will go to assist drought relief. Click this link to read more. |

The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |

What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
