Acting Pres. Keith Ball's Report - 3 May 2021
What a fantastic meeting. Some 44 attended. It was great to see guests, Alex & Jocelyn Jugueta and Sreeni Pallamarri. All attending to “check us out”.
Harishan Ramananthan reported to the Club on his attendance at a RYPEN weekend. I noted his eyes light up as he recalled the experiences of that weekend. I particularly thank Harishan for breaking his study/swotting for exams to attend our meeting.
Donna Harris, Principal of West Pennant Hills Public School, gave a “tour de force” talk on education, changes in teaching techniques, and some of the issues she faces as a Principal. After the talk she faced several questions from members and partners.
Altitude Capital has informed that pressure of work has led to the decision to withdraw activities as Attendance Officer from June 30. I take the opportunity to thank John and his staff, for providing this service. Club Services (Keith) is looking for volunteers (member or partner) to take on this important role.
Next week is a Zoom meeting with Guest Speaker Anne MacDonald talking on “Powers of Attorney and Guardianship.”
Don’t forget to assist with the Pop-Up Book Sale this Saturday.

Night Report - 3 May 2021
- Sergeant John opened the meeting at 7.05pm
- Peter Stanton gave the toast to Australia, Rotary and East Timor volunteers
- Acting President Keith then welcomed all to the meeting and gave a special welcome to guests Harishan Ramananthan (RYPEN) and his father Niru; Alex and Jocelyn Jugueta, Sreeni Piliamarri and Sanjev Sharma who are “checking us out”; Ross and Helen Ballinger and partners Pamela, Lyn P, Lyn H, Dianne, Julianne, Rita, Indira and Jill
- Keith also welcomed our guest speaker Donna Harris, Principal of West Pennant Hills Primary School, aka David Turnbull’s boss (clearly a person of great patience)
- Keith mentioned the ANZAC Commemorative Dinner with WPHC Lions held on 26th April which was an excellent event
- He has placed an order for another dozen club polo shirts
- Neville Hansen reminded us of the Book Sale and Tool Sale this Saturday at the church. We need to start setting up at 7am Sat morning. Trailers will transport books from the containers Friday afternoon and indicated another trailer would be welcome
- Tony Coote advised 24 are going to the Hunter Valley and requested those who haven’t returned their activity sheets to please do so
- Colin Sharpe advised books are still coming in. 17 members and partners have signed up to go to Coonabarrabran which is causing a (pleasant) problem with dinner bookings. Ross Ballinger, Tony Makin and Colin Sharpe are gathering information for the club history and are seeking any details, ie photos etc, for significant events prior to 2008
- Alan Paynter advised he attended a morning tea at Parramatta Mission at which they thanked us for our support through the Tree of Joy. He advised they were losing Government support which will be an issue for them going forward
- David Turnbull reminded us about the Rotary Foundation and the Centurion program, and advised contributions are tax deductable. If anyone wants more information please see David
- Max Henderson advised the Changeover will be a luncheon event at Springfield on the 27th June – please note in diaries. The next SYMT event will be a production of The Addams Family on the 9th July at Hornsby RSL. Let him know if you are interested in attending
- Keith Ball urged members to advise by the deadline if you unable to attend a meeting at Springfield. Unfortunately a number of members have failed to advise which costs the club as we have to pay for prepared meals. He also indicated that Altitude Capital will not be keeping attendance numbers from 30 June so a volunteer is needed to assume this task from 1 July. It’s not a difficult job provided members adhere to the requirements
- Janelle Craig mentioned that Grace’s Place had featured on the Channel 9 news this afternoon. She then introduced Harishan who was our attendee at RYPEN, which was an on-line event this year due to COVID restrictions. Harishan said even though it was on-line it was an inclusive and engaging event. Attendees were placed into teams who then had to complete team based activities requiring co-operation and leadership. The course showed how leaders act and he learned what was required to be a leader, with better communication skills being a key message for him. Harishan said he benefited greatly from attending RYPEN and thanked the club for sponsoring him
- Guest speaker Donna Harris was introduced by Andrew Little
- Donna mentioned that West Pennant Hills Primary is the 4th oldest school in NSW having been established in June 1860
- The focus of her presentation was how the education system has changed since we all went to school. [Note: in some cases this goes back quite a way!]
- The curriculum has changed significantly since the 3R’s – the syllabus is now very crowded
- Prior to 1980 states had their own systems which caused issues for those students moving interstate (I can vouch for this). However in 1980 general agreement was reached with a common syllabus agreed between states although there are still some grey areas
- Emphasis has shifted from knowing and doing to understanding, with students no longer being passive in the classroom but rather being actively engaged and encouraged to think critically. Teachers no longer speak for 80% of the time, rather they talk for 20% and the students then discuss and question
- Significant change has occurred in discipline with the cane no longer an option and withdrawal of privileges being the primary form of punishment and students being encouraged to work on fixing any problems they may have
- Changes have occurred in playground activities with the equipment from the “olden days“ no longer in school playgrounds, ie seesaws, swings etc due to H&S concerns
- Layout in classrooms has changed considerably with rows of desks no longer the norm. Instead rooms are set up with various options, lounges, reading areas etc for the students to determine what works best for them
- Technology has made considerable changes to how students are educated with PC’s, laptops and interactive whiteboards being normal teaching aids. This places some schools at a disadvantage if they don’t have access to financial support
Sergeant session
- Raffle was won by Ross Ballinger
- Sergeant John then ran an interesting quiz – Are you as smart as a 5th grader – where we discovered most of us aren’t. It was finally won by Neville
- There is an inaugural meeting of the 2021/22 Board at Peter Stanton’s this Wednesday the 5th
- 10th May is a Zoom meeting with Anne McDonald, solicitor, as guest speaker
- 17th May is at Springfield with Theo Glockerman as a guest to thank the club for donations to Timor Leste
Night Reporter Jim Simpson
The ANZAC meeting on 26th April was held by Lions.

SYMT Presents "The Addams Family" on Friday 9 July
“The Addams Family” presented by Sydney Youth Musical Theatre at Hornsby RSL Club, 7:30pm on Friday 9 July 2021 Tickets $37.00.
The Addams Family have lived in their unique values for hundreds of years; however, the family encounters an unforeseen obstacle when Wednesday, now eighteen years old, decides to introduce her new “normal” boyfriend, Lucas Beineke, to the family. Wednesday has found herself experiencing a surprising new sensation, one that frightens both her and her family; she has fallen in love. In protest, Uncle Fester enlists the help of the Addam’s ancestors to call an end to the young budding romance. Morticia, Gomez and Pugsley worry about her changing ways. As the Addams and Beinekes come together for dinner one fateful evening, chaos ensues, and the two families find themselves admitting deep secrets and come together in ways they never would have imagined. The Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations: change. Guests welcome, eg grandchildren. Please contact Max if interested. As with previous productions the suggestion is we dine in the bistro prior to the show, say 6.00pm. |
R100 - Celebrate 100 of Rotary in Australia
Article Provided to Dooral Roundup
The Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook celebrated the Centenary of Rotary in Australia , New Zealand and the Pacific by unveiling a commemorative plaque in the Rotary garden near the Rural Fire Service in Macquarie Drive, Cherrybrook. The Hornsby Shire Mayor, Mr Philip Ruddock assisted with the unveiling of the plaque together with the club President Mrs Rosemary Clarke. Representatives including the RFS and Girl Guides planted shrubs together with the Mayor and Rotary’s District Governor, Mr David Clark.
After the event, afternoon tea was served in the guide hall where David Clark and Rosemary Clarke cut the celebration cake.
In February 1921, two special commissioners were appointed to introduce Rotary to Australia and New Zealand. They were Canadians James Davidson of Calgary and Layton Ralston of Halifax. They travelled by ship of course so it was a real expedition
In Melbourne, Vic, they met Sir John Monash, administrator of the Victorian State Electricity Development Authority. One of Australia’s most famous war heroes, Sir John agreed to accept charter membership of the proposed Rotary club, became its second president, and remained involved at club and district level. The Melbourne Club was the first to be chartered on April 21, 1921, 100 years ago this coming Wednesday! Hence the date on our plaque.
Further clubs were chartered in Sydney, Wellington and Auckland soon after.
It was a privilege to celebrate this wonderful occasion.

Update from Flooding in NTA areas- West Timor
NTA: East Indonesia Aid has managed to contact our staff in NTT, and photos are coming through showing us the devastation caused to those areas. These are two schools in Sumlili (West Timor) which we supported through appeals in the past couple of years, wiped out by the floods and torrential rains.
We are currently working on an appeal to raise funds for the affected communities in NTT, but you can also support some of our ongoing initiatives here: https://www.nta.org.au/
Thinking about our local partners and friends in NTT this week, as we pray and hope for a smooth recovery from the widespread destruction

Humour of the Week
Have you had your shot yet!!
During the current pandemic, the people in CAIRO, Egypt's capital city and
home to over 20million people, have been traumatised by the silence in
their streets since the imposing of home lock-down. Usually their streets
throb with a cacophony of noise, chaotic traffic and bustle.
Some people there are becoming physically ill or psychologically disturbed
as a result of the silence so in an attempt to resolve the problem, the
Egyptian Government has asked everyone to go out every night between
6.00pm and 7.00pm and to drive round in their cars, blasting their horns
as loudly as possible.
It is hoped that these familiar sounds will induce a return to tranquility of
the minds and bodies of Cairo folk.
This project is to be known as "The TOOT n CALM EM" method!

The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
