Pres. Rosemary's Report - 12 April 2021
How lovely to have 25 members and a wonderful visitor, Barry Freeman to our Zoom meeting.
Our guest speaker was unable to attend but Keith was able to find 3 videos to entertain us:
Thanks again for a wonderful R100 unveiling of our commemorative plaque. Our club looked resplendent in our new polo shirts and a good time was had by all. Thank you again to the committee and those who helped on the day. Please feel free to water the plants if you are passing by! At the board meeting last Wednesday, it was decided to make 3 flood related donations of $5,000 each to the NTA Flood Appeal in Flores; to Timor Leste Flood Appeal organised by Theo Glockerman from Pennant Hills Rotary; and the Rotary Australia World Community Service, known as RAWCS, for their flood appeal for NSW. |
Coming up is the ANZAC meeting on April 26th and a Springfield meeting on May 3rd. Please consider attending the Springfield meeting as we need to get to the magical number of 28!
There will be another mini Book Sale on May 8th so please help there if you are able.
Also, a Bunnings BBQ on Saturday May 22 just prior to the Hunter Valley trip.
As you can see there is plenty happening for you all to get involved.
I will be away until May 7 but I know you will be well-cared for by Keith.
Stay safe and stay well.

R100 - Celebrate 100 of Rotary in Australia
Article Provided to Dooral Roundup
The Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook celebrated the Centenary of Rotary in Australia , New Zealand and the Pacific by unveiling a commemorative plaque in the Rotary garden near the Rural Fire Service in Macquarie Drive, Cherrybrook. The Hornsby Shire Mayor, Mr Philip Ruddock assisted with the unveiling of the plaque together with the club President Mrs Rosemary Clarke. Representatives including the RFS and Girl Guides planted shrubs together with the Mayor and Rotary’s District Governor, Mr David Clark.
After the event, afternoon tea was served in the guide hall where David Clark and Rosemary Clarke cut the celebration cake.
In February 1921, two special commissioners were appointed to introduce Rotary to Australia and New Zealand. They were Canadians James Davidson of Calgary and Layton Ralston of Halifax. They travelled by ship of course so it was a real expedition
In Melbourne, Vic, they met Sir John Monash, administrator of the Victorian State Electricity Development Authority. One of Australia’s most famous war heroes, Sir John agreed to accept charter membership of the proposed Rotary club, became its second president, and remained involved at club and district level. The Melbourne Club was the first to be chartered on April 21, 1921, 100 years ago this coming Wednesday! Hence the date on our plaque.
Further clubs were chartered in Sydney, Wellington and Auckland soon after.
It was a privilege to celebrate this wonderful occasion.

Update from Flooding in NTA areas- West Timor
NTA: East Indonesia Aid has managed to contact our staff in NTT, and photos are coming through showing us the devastation caused to those areas. These are two schools in Sumlili (West Timor) which we supported through appeals in the past couple of years, wiped out by the floods and torrential rains.
We are currently working on an appeal to raise funds for the affected communities in NTT, but you can also support some of our ongoing initiatives here: https://www.nta.org.au/
Thinking about our local partners and friends in NTT this week, as we pray and hope for a smooth recovery from the widespread destruction

Humour of the Week
The Golden Phone. (sorry if I repeated this one)
An American decided to write a book about famous churches around the world.
So, he bought a plane ticket and took a trip toOrlando, thinking that he would start by working his way across the USA from South to North.
On his first day he was inside a church taking photographs, when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read '$10,000 per call'.
The American, being intrigued, asked a priest who was strolling by, what the telephone was used for.
The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000 you could talk to God.
The American thanked the priest and went along his way.
Next stop was in Atlanta. There, at a very large cathedral, he saw the same looking golden telephone with the same sign under it. He wondered if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in Orlando and he asked a nearby nun what its purpose was.
She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000 he could talk to God.
'O.K., thank you,' said the American.
He then travelled all across America, Europe, England, Japan, New Zealand. In every church he saw the same looking golden telephone, with the same '$US10,000 per call' sign under it.
The American decided to travel to Australia to see if Australians had the same phone.
He arrived at Noosa in Australia and again, in the first church he entered, there was the same looking golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read, '40 cents per call.'
The American was surprised, so he asked the priest about the sign.
'Father, I've travelled all over the world and I've seen this same golden telephone in many churches I'm told that it is a direct line to Heaven, but in all of them, the price was $10,000 per call.
Why is it so cheap here?'
The priest smiled and answered,
'You're in Australia now, son - "This is Heaven," so it's a local call'.

The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 17 August 2019 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,600 all of which will go to assist drought relief. Click this link to read more. |
The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
