Pres. Rosemary's Report - 17 May 2021

Theo Glockermann, our guest speaker, has a remarkably interesting story to tell. We were all enthralled listening to him tell us about RYLA and RYPEN in Timor Leste. Our donation of $5,000 was well received and well spent.
Even though the end of the Rotary year is closing in, our club powers on.
Between now and the end of June we have a Bunnings BBQ, a social visit to the Hunter Valley and the Sydney Rowing Club, a visit to Pennant Hills club for their meeting on Wednesday June 2, assisting at the Equestrian Expo with our country cousins, Coonabarabran Rotary Club, a Book/Tool sale on June 12, Pride of Workmanship meeting on June 21 and then the Changeover on June 27.
Phew!! I’m exhausted thinking about it all. Thank you all for keeping up the momentum to the very end.
Our Rotary motto is “Service above self”. This club is certainly living up to it.
Enjoy your week off next week and stay safe and warm.

Night Report - 17 May 2021
Sergeant David Turnbull opened the meeting and, following a toast from Colin Baxter, introduced President Rosemary.
President Rosemary welcomed guests Theo Glockermann, Alex and Jocelyn Jugueta, Wendy and Bob Carritt and hubby Rob.
Rosemary noted we are finishing the year with a bang –
Social: Hunter valley trip, Rowing club lunch plus Pennant Hills club visit on June 2 at Pennant Hills Golf club,
And others: assisting at the Equestrian Expo at Coonabarabran from June 3 – 8, Book /Tool sale June 12, Pride of Workmanship on June 21 and then Changeover Sunday 27 at Springfield.
Latest news includes the amalgamation of Galston and Glenhaven clubs to form a new Rotary club of Greater Hills.
Rotary Fact: “Service Above Self” was adopted in 1989 by the Council on Legislation but is derived from “He Profits Most Who Serves Best” which was the motto adopted in 1911 at the second Rotary Convention.
Directors’ reports included:
Janelle confirmed we are sponsoring three kids from Coonabarabran to attend the Santos Science Experience on 7-9 July.
Keith had the entire weight of the World on his shoulders:
Edwina noted that the Pride of Workmanship meeting will be an epic.
Colin Sharpe reported that the history group is progressing. Also needs help:
David Turnbull reported he had attended the Foundation Zoom meeting at the weekend. Foundation has handled donations of $3bn since its inception.
David also advised we shall need volunteers for the West Pennant Hills Primary “Walkathon” on 17Ju21. BBQ for 600 students.
Tony Coote had lots to say but most is in Rosemary’s report above.
Bob Davison introduced speaker Theo Glockermann, a Rotarian for over 30 years, past president of Pennant Hills club and was awarded OAM for his service to youth, particularly in East Timor.
Theo outlined the formation of RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) programmes in Timor. The programme have been enthusiastically adopted in Timor which was almost destroyed in 1999 by the Indonesian occupation force and is still trying to rebuild.
The firsts RYLA was attended by 50 students in 2010, rising to 100 students in 2011 and continues to grow. Woodside was approached for funds in 2012 and they remain a significant sponsor. The programme is now run by the Timorese who have to cull approximately 1000 applicants.
A scheme to promote a University Graduate programme has now been launched.
Bob thanked Theo for an illuminating presentation.
David ran a chaotic but hilarious question and answer session based on the RAWCS Rover magazine. Theo drew his own ticket for the wine but asked for redraw – Colin Baxter came out second and Bob Carritt walked away with the white.
Rosemary thanked all for attending and reminded all that the next meeting is Wednesday 2nd June at Pennant Hills Golf Club.

Club Changeover at Springfield House - 27 June
SYMT Presents "The Addams Family" on Friday 9 July
“The Addams Family” presented by Sydney Youth Musical Theatre at Hornsby RSL Club, 7:30pm on Friday 9 July 2021 Tickets $37.00.
The Addams Family have lived in their unique values for hundreds of years; however, the family encounters an unforeseen obstacle when Wednesday, now eighteen years old, decides to introduce her new “normal” boyfriend, Lucas Beineke, to the family. Wednesday has found herself experiencing a surprising new sensation, one that frightens both her and her family; she has fallen in love. In protest, Uncle Fester enlists the help of the Addam’s ancestors to call an end to the young budding romance. Morticia, Gomez and Pugsley worry about her changing ways. As the Addams and Beinekes come together for dinner one fateful evening, chaos ensues, and the two families find themselves admitting deep secrets and come together in ways they never would have imagined. The Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations: change. Guests welcome, eg grandchildren. As with previous productions the suggestion is we dine in the bistro prior to the show, say 6.00pm. Please make your payment ($37.00pp) into the club’s General Account by 30 June and identify your payment with your Surname and "SYMT". |

Humour of the Week
They Walk Among Us
My husband and I went through the McDonald's driveway window and I gave the cashier a $5 bill.
Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her 25c.
She said, 'you gave me too much money.'
I said, 'Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar back.'
She sighed and went to get the manager who asked me to repeat my request.
I did so, and he handed me back the 25c, and said 'We're sorry but we don’t do that kind of thing.'
The cashier then proceeded to give me back 75 cents in change.
Do not confuse the people at Mac D's.
We had to have the garage door repaired.
The repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a 'large' enough motor on the opener.
I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower.
He shook his head and said, 'You need a 1/4 horsepower.'
I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4 and he said, 'NOOO, it's not. Four is larger than two.'
We haven't used that repairman since...
I live in a semi -rural area.
We recently had a new neighbour call the local council office to request the removal of the DEER CROSSING sign on our road.
The reason: 'Too many deer are being hit by cars out here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore.'
IDIOT SIGHTING IN FOOD SERVICE.
My daughter went to a Mexican fast food and ordered a taco.
She asked the person behind the counter for 'minimal lettuce.'
He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg lettuce.
I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked,
'Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?'
To which I replied, 'If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?'
He smiled knowingly and nodded, 'That's why we ask.'
The pedestrian light on the corner beeps when it's safe to cross the street.
I was crossing with an 'intellectually challenged' co-worker of mine.
She asked if I knew what the beeper was for.
I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red.
Appalled, she responded, 'what on earth are blind people doing driving?!'
She is a government employee.....
When my wife and I arrived at a car dealership to pick up our car after a
service, we were told the keys had been locked in it.
We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver’s side door.
As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked.
‘Hey,' I announced to the technician, 'its open!'
His reply, 'I know. I already did that side.'
STAY ALERT!
They walk among us, they breed, and they vote…....

2019 Trivia Night
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 17 August 2019 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,600 all of which will go to assist drought relief. Click this link to read more. |
The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
