Night Report - 12 July 2021
David Turnball in his role Sergeant opened the meeting at 7.34pm. Colin McGowen was invited to give the toast- to Rotary, Australia and all the people doing the right thing in COVID times by getting vaccinated.
President’s Report:
President Keith welcomed everyone including our guest speaker, Kylie Pike and prospective member Alex Jugueta. It was noted that Alex was due to be inducted this week but this has been delayed due to lockdown. He advised a plan will be developed this week to determine how and when this will occur.
Sunday 1st August has been pencilled in for the deferred Changeover at Springfield House and we will monitor this based on ongoing developments and government advice in lite of the current COVID-19 situation in NSW. (Editor - Event Postponed).
It was noted that Jason Terry will be transferring his membership to the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills due to clashes with our Club’s Monday night meetings and his District Rotaract commitments.
Directors Reports:
David Turnbull reported on Foundation. He advised he, Keith and Peter had submitted a District grant relating to NTA that Peter will elaborate on further in his report.
Carol Russell advised that membership is in good shape thanks to Tony Coote’s hardwork last year. In the absence of Neville, she reported on Public Image to advise that the latest edition of Dooral Roundup has just been released and carries a story and photo on the Club’s Pride of Workmanship meeting.
Peter Stanton gave an update on the International portfolio and advised the Club has submitted a District grant for 2021-22, entitled ‘Covid-19 Response to Schools and Rural Communities in East Indonesia’. Local communities are very vulnerable to the Covid 19 pandemic and NTA been very active in the field. He also advised that the District grant “Feed Phuket” has been closed, and $1,000 has been transferred by District, to the Club’s accounts and will be forwarded to RC Patong Beach.
Cawas Sahukar, our Community Services Director advised he had nothing to report, but that the first committee meeting would be scheduled shortly.
Edwina Ruff reported that the Vocational team was yet to meet. Given the COVID situation thought may be given again to certificates of recognition for local businesses who continue to trade (as per the Club’s 2020 initiative).
Rosemary Clarke reported on Youth Services, advising, the Santos Science Experience has been postponed until the September school holidays; Harishan our RYPEN candidate has applied, with the Club’s endorsement, for the 2022 NYSF program; our club and Pennant Hills Rotary continue to support the Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook Rotaract Club; RYLA nominations are coming up soon and she hopes our club will be able to support two candidates – one from the Rotaract Club and the other drawn from the local community.
Janelle Craig discussed Club Services, saying teams and tasks in this portfolio were bedding down nicely as we embark on the new Rotary year, but that changes in the current COVID situation meant we need to be adaptable to change in terms of meetings, speakers and rosters, and she thanked members as we work through this situation.
Tony Coote reported on finances in his role of Treasurer. He thanked those 23 members who had already paid their dues (most doing so for the full year) and encouraged others to follow their lead. With his hat on as Social Director, he advised that Friendship meals are scheduled for mid-August (COVID dependent) and that 1 or 2 more hosts are still required (please contact him if you wish to take on this role). There will be a Social Committee meeting on 27/07/2021 at the Coote’s residence or via zoom if lockdown necessitates.
Max Henderson advised that Fundraising activities have been impacted by COVID with the July pop-up bookstall cancelled and viability of the August event to be determined if and when we have more advice on COVID restrictions/lockdown.
Guest Speaker: Kylie Pike – GPs in Schools
Rosemary Clarke welcomed and introduced Kylie Pike our guest speaker for the evening. Kylie is the Corporate Partnerships Manager for the Sydney North Health Network. This not- for- profit organisation covers 9 LGAs in Sydney’s north and northern beaches. It covers a range of health sectors and runs programs such as home support, immunisation, falls prevention and health literacy.
However tonight Kylie joined us to discuss the ‘GPs in Schools’ program.
Kylie advised this program aims to encourage and empower Year 11 students to take responsibility for their own health, and to educate them on how and when to access health services. The program is delivered by trained general practitioners and nurses, at high schools for Year 11 students aged 15 – 17 in SNHN’s region. The program is an evidence based, 3-hour intensive workshop conducted in small friendship/peer groups of approximately 15 students per facilitator, onsite at the school. It covers everything from physical health and activity, nutrition, relationships, drug & alcohol, Medicare and access to services, and mental health and wellbeing. Kylie said that in the past 5 years the program has grown from 18 schools to 55 participating per annum. In fact, both Pennant Hills High School and Cherrybrook Technology High School are due to participate this year (Pennant Hills 18/08/2021 and CTHS 25/10/2021). Feedback from the 2019/2020 student evaluations were highly supportive of the program, revealing 97% of students had a better understanding on what services they can go to for health information or advice, while 93% felt more comfortable going to their doctor as a result of their participation in the program.
Rosemary asked what our club could do to support the program, to which Kylie responded, advising sponsorship, fundraising and access to networks would be of great assistance. The cost of operating the session at CTHS for example costs around $5000.
Rosemary thanked Kylie for addressing the club and providing insight into a needed and enriching program.
Sgt David conducted another of his infamous True and False sessions, and handed back to President Keith who reminded members that the next meeting on Monday 19/07/2021 will be a Zoom meeting with Harold Sharpe talking about ROMAC, while the Board will meet via Zoom on Wednesday night 14/07/2021. He also asked us to hold John Carauna and his family in our thoughts.

R100 Garden
Three months have passed since the formal “opening “ of our R100 garden at the RFS/Girl Guide site. With some tender love from Anne and Tim Sharpe who covered the garden with leaf mulch and Rosemary who often weeds it on her local walks, it is flourishing.
Every plant is doing well, the DG’s plant is flowering along with several others. When you are in the area pop in to check up on it. It adds to the attractiveness of Cherrybrook.

“COVID -19 Variants and Vaccines, the Lockdown update”
COVID-19: Variants & Vaccines, the Lockdown Update - YouTube
The presentation was accurate as of 9th July 2021. Some widening of the age group acceptability for the AstraZeneca vaccine have been made since that presentation date.
The 2 main speakers were Internationally renowned experts in immunology and vaccine development, Professor Tony Cunningham and Professor Sarah Palmer.
I have attached a link to that presentation. It is well worth watching.
I also took some Notes and attach for those who only wish to get a quick grab - but the notes don’t do the presentation justice.
Kind Regards
Colin McGowan

Sydney Rowing Club Lunch 20 June
26 members and Partners spent a relaxing lunch at Watergrill at Sydney Rowing Club on Sunday. The rain held off (mostly) so most of us took the ferry from Rydalmere to Abbotsford. Its an interesting trip and a bit different arriving by boat. The food was good, the grog was on the expensive side, but overall it was fun and we would certainly go back. A special welcome to Alex and Jocelyn, who fitted into the group very well.

What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
