Member Talk.
Adrian Sonego gave a very interesting talk about Historical events related to his Italian family’s arrival in Australia many years ago, and the area that they settled in initially. Afterwards lots of conversation generated from members interested in more information.
Barry Freeman Misses us all!! Lives in a beautiful place on the central coast and has made lots of new friends there. There were only 9 cases of Covid in his area. He is a member of Rotary Club of Woy Woy, where he has been Vocational Director, however is taking a sabbatical from Rotary in the coming year. He told us how organised and well managed our club is which has no doubt contributed to the club’s longevity.
Doug Lam, then introduced our speaker for the evening… Dennis Carpenter who has lived in Phuket since 2005 and who is a Charter member of the Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook. Dennis was instrumental in getting the first Bulletin of Patong Beach up and running.
He spoke of the situation now in his new country with the effects of Covid being felt right across the country however with 3,015 cases only 56 deaths which is remarkable. He spoke of the hardship of the people without the financial support that the Tourism industry brought to the country when most businesses were closed and incomes had ceased. Government assistance allowed 62% of the last months salary.
There are 9 Rotary Clubs in Phuket / Patong with 10 different nationalities of members. There are many construction camps in the area and one member discovered the abstract poverty large groups of people were living in, so in true Rotary style mobilised to provide Food Parcels, 600 pr of rubber shoes, funds to hospitals for Scanners/Monitors and hospital gowns, one club gave a Vehicle to spray roadways and also funds for Spray Booths for sanitisation purposes.
Tony Coote thanked Dennis for the interesting perspective in a country without the resources Australia has to combat this Virus.
Heads and Tails was won by Bill Mann

This Week's Humour / Interesting Facts
How to Make a Woman Truly Happy
A man walking along a beach in California was deep in prayer. Suddenly, he said out loud: “God grant me one wish”.
The sunny California sky clouded above his head and in a booming voice God said: “Because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish”.
The man said: “Build a bridge to Hawaii, 3000 miles long, so I can drive there any time I want”.
God replied: “Your request is very materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking. The supports and the material required to reach the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. The concrete and steel it would take over thousands of miles. I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of another wish. A wish you think would honor and glorify me.
The man thought about it for a long time. Finally, he said: “God, I wish I could understand women. I want to know how they feel inside, what they are thinking when they give the silent treatment, why they cry, what they mean when they say NOTHING, and how I can make a woman truly happy”.
God replied: “You want two or four lanes on that bridge”?
Thanks Stan
Paradoxes of today's life
*Never have I seen such a mess in life.*
The air is pure but wearing a mask is mandatory.
Roads are empty but it is impossible to go on a long drive.
People have clean hands but there is a ban on shaking hands.
Friends have time to sit together but they cannot get together.
The cook inside you is crazy, but you cannot call anyone to lunch or dinner.
Every Monday, the heart longs for the office but the weekend does not seem to end.
Those who have money have no way to spend it.
Those who don't have money have no way to earn it.
There is enough time on hand but you cannot fulfill your dreams.
The culprit is all around but cannot be seen.
If someone leaves this world, he cannot be bid adieu.
Thanks Cawas

What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
