Pres. Rosemary's Report - 18 January 2021
It was lovely to see so many members and one guest Sanjeev Sharma at our Zoom meeting. I’m sure the other members were enjoying some holiday time. Much has been happening – semi annual dues paid to Rotary International, Australia Day event being organised, President’s lunch transferred to an evening BBQ at Galston, new member badges received, work on a new club shirt nearing completion, masks being sold, a new rock being placed in the Rotary garden at RFS and so the list goes on. Thanks to Colin Sharpe for sharing the details of the Tree of Joy and the trip to Coonabarabran. That club is worthy of our continued friendship and support. Please collect bread tags to go towards wheelchairs and there is a possibility to collect aluminium cans with proceeds also going to wheelchairs. Details from Tony Makin. Remember to register for the District Conference. Details were sent out prior to Christmas. Thank you so much to the board for stepping up whilst Rob and I go to Queensland in February which involves being out of Greater Sydney for 2 weeks before entering Queensland. Looking forward to seeing some of you face to face at Galston on Saturday. Happy Australia Day! Rosemary |
President’s BBQ at Galston 23rd January 2021
Would it be too hot? Would there be enough shade? Would there be mosquitoes!
The evening was just perfect with a gentle breeze, a few rumbles of thunder but a time for socialising and catching up. The chats, food and drink were plentiful and everyone enjoyed the setting.
Thanks to Douglas, Peter, Tony and Bob plus Bev and Rob for setting up the area and to everyone for packing up.
Maybe it should become a monthly event alternating between Saturdays and Sundays!

Night Report - 18 January 2021
Sergeant Jim open the meeting at 7.35pm with the wish that 2021 be a better year than 2020.
Neville proposed the toast to Rotary Australia and the Australian Cricket team to win on 19th.
Rosemary acknowledged apologies from Max Henderson, Jason and Jaswant Thakeral, and Welcomed Sanjeev Sharma, our guest for the evening.
She noted that the Presidents lunch at her home was now transferred to Galston Park due to limit on numbers in the home, and in an open space 30 people could be present. The District Australia Day celebrations are going ahead at 11.30 am at Don Moore Community Centre at North Rocks and at 5.30 Jazz bands and the Movie “The Sapphires” at John Wearne park, North Rocks after dark. District had requested a club video. It was decided to pass on this offer. She suggested some simple ways we might raise money for charities. Collecting bread tags. When collected in volume if we all saved ours, they can be sent off to a place in Melbourne where they are then recycled into saleable bowls, mugs, etc, and when sold, the proceeds go to funding wheelchairs in Africa. The same process with recycling cans, proceeds donated to fund purchase of wheelchairs for the under privileged. Branding…. This to be right in focus in 2021. We need to have all our literature, signage, logo’s etc. etc. correct this year.
Sergeant Jim then called for Directors reports.
Keith Ball -
New Dinner badges have been procured and a sample was shown to the Zoom members. Style of Badges for partners to be discussed at next Board Meeting. Shirts - samples to hand, job almost done. (c) Facebook - Logo is now compliant.
(d) Springfield Venue - at present the arrangement is 1 at Springfield / 1 on Zoom.
(e) February 8th – Partners Night. International Flavour Peter Stanton to present.
Colin Sharpe….
Mask sales since Christmas amounted to approx. $500. Thanks to Anne and Bev. Community Service. A large rock has been placed in the park by the Hornsby Council at the Fire Station at Cherrybrook commemorating 100 Years of Rotary in Australia, and a sign is now to be erected by members with the club details, near the rock. Cawas noted at this time that he has received a Certificate of Appreciation from Shine for Kids after receiving gifts from our Tree of Joy.
Stan Basely has also received a Certificate of Appreciation from Camp Quality for the gifts the children received.
Both certificates will appear in the Bulletin shortly.
Peter Stanton - No new developments on the International Front. Peter will present to us at meeting of 8th February.
Janelle Craig - Youth
National Youth Science Forum. Will happen in a different format this year. Conoco Phillips Science Experience - Janelle discussing with Coonabarabran Club on who will attend. RYPEN - Harrison is our candidate and it begins on 12th Feb. Rotary Youth Exchange Dinner – Muirfield Golf Club 5th February, 2021.
Tony Coote – Membership
Tony mentioned the Presidential BBQ at Galston on Saturday 23rd, numbers now fully subscribed. Volunteers required to tidy the area and set up Gazebo’s.
Trip Away in May. Proposed to the Hunter Valley, days yet to be exactly set, currently under discussion. Committee put together Bev/Bob/Doug/Tony/David/George to organize. Steve Baker suggested a “Silo Art Trail” trip away at some time to enable visits to our country towns and which would support them in the Shop Local endeavors.
Carol Russell – Public Image
An article put together before Christmas has been set for print in the Dooral Roundup in February. Subject Tree of Joy and thanking the community for the immense support.
Member Talk
Colin Sharpe reported on the trip to Coonabarabran to deliver Gifts for Children from the Trees of Joy and Pamper Packs our Club and The Hills Inner Wheel had prepared for families in that area.
He reported that at in 2021 at Cherrybrook Village 1166 requests had been made from the 12 participating charities and 1002 were received. In 2020 11 charities benefited with 959 requests and 823 received.
At Westleigh Shopping Village this year for the first time, 2 charities participated with 297 requests and 256 received.
Members of the public also kindly participated simply dropping off gifts to be given to the children, without taking a gift tag from the tree.
Coonabarabran - 59 gifts from the Trees of Joy were given for children, with 130 Pamper Packs made up from Members of the club and the Hills Inner Wheel group. All were very gratefully received.
A group of Club members, the Sharpes, Savios, Turnbulls and Littles travelled to Coonabarabran on this occasion and attended 2 events where gifts where gratefully received and hospitality excelled. The Members of the Coonabarabran Rotary Club really appreciated our efforts to support them and several letters of thanks had been received.
Sergeant Session. True / False questions posed by Jim…. Clever Jim!!!.. no one won the Virtual Wine!!!
Rosemary closed off the meeting reminding members of the Book Sale committee meeting on Tuesday 19th, the BBQ on Saturday evening, and that meetings will be alternate from now on as follows… 1st Feb Zoom / 8th at Springfield/ 15th Zoom/ 22nd Springfield.
She apologised in advance for her absence during most of February.

Appreciation message from Coonabarabran
Dear Rosemary.
Jo Wilkin gave me your email address as I was wanting to thank you and all the other Rotarians involved for the Christmas hamper we received. Unfortunately Beverley and I were unable to be at the Belar Creek, Coonabarabran, Christmas get together but our daughter, Belinda Johnson, was there and arrived home with the Rotary gift hamper. What a beautiful surprise!
We decided to wait till Christmas Day to unpack it and found all manner of "goodies" in it. THANK YOU ALL FOR THE CONTENTS OF THE HAMPER AND THE THOUGHTS THAT CAME WITH THEM.
We have had a close relationship with Coonabarabran Rotary over many years, and the great work the organisation does never cease to amaze us. Again, thank you all so much.
With best wishes for 2021.
Yours sincerely,
Beverley and Arnold McWILLIAMS

Hi Stan,
Happy New Year! I hope your trip to QLD went well and you enjoyed Christmas with your son. Unfortunately, our trip to QLD was cancelled with the COVID breakouts – we will hopefully get to visit my husband’s family later in the year.
As previously mentioned, all the wonderful gifts collected in 2020 were given to the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. I’ve attached a photograph of my colleague, Deb Moore delivering the presents to the Child Life Therapists that work at the hospital. I’ve also included below some feedback I received from Veronica Oakley, Child Life Therapist.
Hi Tania,
The gifts were received with Joy and smiles.
The parents were extremely grateful for the thoughtfulness and generosity from the Rotary Club and Camp Quality.
There were a few tears when they read thoughts and positive wishes written on the beautiful cards attached to the gifts. Knowing that other people have you in their thoughts and hearts means so much to a family facing the unknown. Please pass on our gratitude for this generous donation.
Thank You
Veronica
I’m hoping that 2021 is going to be a much better one for everyone and I look forward to seeing you later in the year.
Regards,
Tania

Everyone PLEASE be careful because people are going crazy from being locked down at home !
I was just talking about this with the microwave and the toaster while drinking my Coffee, and we all agreed that things are getting bad.
I didn’t mention any of this to the washing machine, because she puts a different spin on EVERYTHING !!
Certainly, couldn’t share with the fridge, because he’s been acting cold and distant!'
In the end, the iron straightened me out! She said the situation isn’t all that pressing and all the wrinkles will soon get ironed out!
The vacuum, however, was very unsympathetic…told me to just suck it up! But the fan was VERY optimistic and gave me hope that it will all blow over soon!
The toilet looked a bit flushed but didn’t say anything when I asked its opinion, but the front door said I was becoming unhinged and the doorknob told me to get a grip !! You can just about guess what the curtains told me: they told me to “pull myself together!”
We will survive ! !

2019 Trivia Night
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 17 August 2019 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,600 all of which will go to assist drought relief. Click this link to read more. |
The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
