Pres. Rosemary's Report - 10 August 2020

Picture
What a great night to have a meeting at home! Cold, wet and miserable outside!
However, our meeting was not any of the above.

It was lovely to have Denis Carpenter join us from Bangkok to let us know how things are progressing in Phuket. Our donation has arrived and is being used to help many.

Our guest speaker Hilary Black from Westmead Institute of Medical Research enlightened us about the ongoing research. Many doctors are working hard to find ways to keep us healthy.

The directors are keeping us up to date with activities. Social activities will happen one day!

We now know a lot more about Bill. What a builder as well as a great family man.
The next board meeting is on Wednesday.

Until next week, stay safe, stay well, stay warm, stay dry, stay at home, and wear a mask! Phew!

Night Report - 10 August 2020

Sergeant David Turnbull opened the meeting with an invitation for Alan Paynter to propose a toast.  The toast was to the Health Workers and RI.

President Rosemary welcomed all, especially Anna, Dennis Carpenter and our Guest Speaker Hilary.
Rosemary gleefully advised that we are going to have our first female RI President – sounds like a good idea.

Rotary Information for this week - Our club belongs to The Hills group which has Robert Erskine as the Assistant Governor.  The clubs are Beecroft/Castle Hill/Carlingford/Epping/North Rocks/Pennant Hills and us.

Directors reports were as follows:
Keith reminded all that Kerry is looking for appropriate speakers.
Colin Sharpe requested volunteers to assist Inala golf day on 27th August and advised that the Virtual Neighbour scheme is to be further discussed at the next board meeting.
Peter Stanton was an apology but Rosemary advised that the donation to Patonga Beach club has been transferred to the club.  We are awaiting advice on a grant. Dennis noted that the current exchange rate has resulted in a highly effective return in Baht.
Janelle confirmed that Rotaract planning is progressing but the face to face meeting planned for this month will be postponed.  Members are encouraged to recommend Rotaract to suitable 18 to 30 year olds.
Edwina has suggested we award certificates of appreciation to front line workers in the pandemic.
Tony Coote advised that there will be a Covid-safe car run on 20th September.  Alan Paynter provided details.  Tony also advised that the containers and refurbed BBQ will be christened at a club BBQ on 30th August at the site of the containers in Dural.  A show of hands confirmed interest in a bush walk – details to be investigated.
Carol agreed to provide members with a publication on Zoom etiquette (not suggesting our members are uncouth).

Bill Mann then gave us a detailed account of his colourful life so far, supported by a powerpoint and photos put together secretly by Kerry.
Father’s family from Colne in Lancashire (the town which provided the bandmaster for the Titanic)
Mother from – Timaru – South Island of NZ
Born to Sydney and Evelyn (nee MacCauley) on 21 July 1954 in Blenheim NZ
Lived in Fiji, Wellington and Timaru in NZ
Started working – carpentry apprenticeship 1971
Went to Papua New Guinea with Church Group and had Outward Bound experience
Moved to Blenheim after getting married
Moved to Australia and started own Building company
Succumbed to the charms of Kerry after separating from his first wife
Demonstrated amazing building skills by building the roof of his house at ground level and then lifting it into position.  The photo of the result shows a fabulous house
Bill is now the centre of a large happy family.

Tony Coote introduced our guest speaker, Hilary May Black from Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR).  Hilary has been a lawyer, film producer  and secondary school teacher but is now a member of the fundraising team at the WIMR Foundation. WIMR includes researchers and clinicians working at Westmead Hospital which provide an integrated team with the aim of providing the most cost-effective way of achieving treatment for major illnesses.
The 400 researchers work in five areas: Infections (HIV, TB and Diabetes), Cancer (blood and melanoma, breast and ovarian), Cardio Respiratory, Liver and Metabolic illnesses (Hepatitis) and Neurosciences and Vision.
Short videos provided details of research for Ovarian Cancer by Prof Anna deFazio, use of stem cells in regeneration of damaged heart cells by Dr James Chong and for a
Covid-19 vaccine especially formulated for older people by Prof Tony Cunningham and Prof Sarah Palmer.
Hilary explained that assistance can be provided to WIMR by completing an online survey (an email was sent to members), volunteering or supporting various fund-raising projects.  More details are available below (WIMR Gifts in Wills pdf), on line (link below) and by subscribing to the newsletter.

Sergeant David dispensed with the Sergeant’s session in view of the time.

President Rosemary thanked all for attending and providing an interesting and informative meeting, especially Bill and Hilary.

Etiquette for zoom meetings

Best Practice Suggestions:

Invest in a high-quality headset and webcam. Most laptops now include these, but for those with dated equipment, this purchase is a must.
Internet - minimum suggested speeds are 20 mbs/download, and 10 mbs/upload.
Present yourself positioned in front of a professional environment, free of distractions, with adequate foreground lighting and minimum background lighting to ensure a visible face to the camera.

Webcam zoom. Ideally, project your face and upper body; no more and no less.
“Can you hear me?” Members are encouraged to avoid the temptation to begin their speaking portion with a question, such as “Can you hear me?” – assume you can be heard.
Sit still when your camera is on…. People moving around consistently is distracting to others especially when someone is speaking.

Have audio on only during speaking portions. In order to minimise distractions, please mute yourself during your non-speaking portions. Your mic should be activated (located in the bottom part of your screen when in the meeting) as soon as your turn begins.
o   Pro-tip. Using the space bar acts as a mic-open button. Start with your mic muted, pressing and holding the space bar opens your mic. Releasing the space bar closes your mic.

Cheers.   Carol.

Hilary also mentions that "there is an opportunity for the club to visit us here at WIMR (once Covid-19 restrictions are eased) to tour our laboratories and meet with our researchers paired with a morning or afternoon tea. We can customise the tour according to your particular research interests. Due to our researchers commitments we can offer the tours during the weekday.

We also hold a number of events such as our bi-monthly “Meet the Researcher” talks during the evening so this may also suit your members more. At this stage our next session will be on heart health featuring Dr. James Chong who you saw in the presentation last night. I can send you the invitation to this if you think this will be of interest."

Taldamunde Gardening and Lawns Working Bee - Fri 31 July 2020

Pictures and message from Liz.

Thank you for sharing your lovely photos with me. Looks like you all worked hard tidying the garden and disposing of all those leaves!!! Also looks like it was a nice opportunity to hang out with your friends.

Marisa said ‘it was a lovely day with the volunteers and that you went over and above and even came back to collect the green waste so we didn’t have to organise someone to take it to the tip!’

Thank you for doing this and for making it such a hassle-free day for us. The vege patch, gardens and yard look amazing! You’ve really made a huge difference to the staff and young residents at the property. When the garden is looking lovely it really lifts the spirits and invites everyone to enjoy the outdoors more. So please pass on our heart-felt thanks to everyone who attended on Friday. You’re all so wonderful!

.........Cawas, thanks again! We’re so grateful for your help.

Kind regards
Liz

BBQ Trailer Update

We’re nearly finished! Its been a big job to refurbish the trailer, interrupted by the Coronavirus, but we’re nearly there.
Last Sunday 19 July, we met at Tony Coote’s home for another working bee. Thank you, Tony Coote, Douglas Lam, David Turnbull and Tony Makin for all your work, and especially a big thank you to Glenda and Miriam for the yummy toasties’ sandwiches, mini chicken drumsticks, cakes and lots of coffee.
The main tasks were to clean, repair and paint various trailer components and then install new electrics, door seals, door locks and latches, a new wash station and a new tool box.  Its starting to look good
We will meet again next Friday to finish off a few final bits and pieces and then we will take the trailer back to Ricardo’s workshop where Ricardo has volunteered to paint the underside of the trailer with a protective coating.
We will then load up the trailer with all its catering equipment, tables, marquees etc. and return it to its Galston storage ready for our next BBQ project

Thanks again for all your help.
Keep safe.
Adrian Sonego

2019 Trivia Night

The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 17 August 2019 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,600 all of which will go to assist drought relief. Click this link to read more.

 The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.

Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result.

What it takes to be a Rotarian

There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club.  From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure.  The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.

Don't need:
  • to be invited
  • to be of a certain age
  • to be male
  • to be a business person
  • to be retired
  • to attend meetings every week
  • to be available on weekends.

Must have:
  • a sense of humour
  • a willingness to give back to your community
  • a willingness to pitch in when required
  • some time available to help out on the occasional weekend event
  • an interest in the life of the West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook communities
  • a desire to contribute in some way to the running of the Club.

If you would like to come along as a guest to see what it is all about just call either:-
President Keith (0478 599 155) or Tony (Membership) (0412 812 624)
