Support to Lawn Bowls team from Norfolk Island

13-15 August
Our Club with the Entrance RC recently provided some assistance to three young girls from Norfolk Island Public School who came to the Central Coast to play in a NSW Combined High Schools Lawn Bowls competition held at Bateau Bay. Competing were Ellie Dixon, Maycee Deszecsar  and  Tracey Wora. who were accompanied by their mothers. Norfolk Island is an external territory some 900klm off Tweed Head with a population around 1700. We assisted with their travel costs, and with a cheer squad, Bob and Bev from our club, and Pres. Robin and Clive from Entrance RC.
The girls played well against tough competition, but didn't make the finals. One challenge they faced was the difference in the greens - this time of year the Bateau Bay greens were dormant for winter, hence a lot faster than those on Norfolk which is sub-tropical. The girls had a great experience, and it was fun to watch.

What it takes to be a Rotarian

There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club.  From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure.  The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.

Don't need:
  • to be invited
  • to be of a certain age
  • to be male
  • to be a business person
  • to be retired
  • to attend meetings every week
  • to be available on weekends.

Must have:
  • a sense of humour
  • a willingness to give back to your community
  • a willingness to pitch in when required
  • some time available to help out on the occasional weekend event
  • an interest in the life of the West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook communities
  • a desire to contribute in some way to the running of the Club.

If you would like to come along as a guest to see what it is all about just call either:-

 The Garage Sale 2018
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 13 & 14 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.

Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result.

President's Report  09 September 2019

Picture

Tonight we saw John dressed as a Centurion to promote the Centurion program for Foundation.
Our guest speaker was Rob Byrne, Senior Coordinator, Foundation Services.
We also had outgoing exchange student Katherine Louey (and her mom, Faye) visit.  Katherine gave a wonderful talk on her expectations next year.
I started off to Doonside to see the sod turning at Graces Place but nearing completion, felt sick and turned around to return home.  Adrian gave an account of the opening.
All three Clubs, involved in the Foundation fundraiser film “Ride like a Girl”, have cancelled the event.  I have since written to all members suggesting alternative venues.
See you next week when we have a Club Forum.

Night Report 9th September

Night Report
Opening: Sgt John T fully dressed (thankfully) as a Roman Centurion opened the meeting, welcomed our guest speaker, Rob Byrne, Rotary Foundation and visitors, 2020 outgoing exchange student Katherine Louey and her mother Fay.

President Keith’s Report
Also refer President’s report in bulletin.
The movie “Ride like a girl” night for next Tuesday (10/09) event sponsored by RC Beecroft, RC Pennant Hills and RC WPH&C was cancelled due to lack of support.
He could not attend the soil turning for the “Grace’s Place” development at Doonside due to ill health, however Adrian attended and will report latter.

Director’s Reports (as applicable)
Adrian: attended the “soil turning” launch for “Grace’s Place” (Anita Coby’s mother) at Doonside on Saturday morning that was extremely well attended. Blacktown council has donated the site with proposed Federal and State government funding of $6.0m and $3.30m respectively for the development. It will cater for children affected by homicide.

Janelle: a) also welcomed our 2020 outgoing exchange student Katherine Louey who is bound for Austria and her mother Fay, and b) sought preferences as to our new club polo shirts with three material options plus colour options to consider, samples were available at the meeting.
David: something different Garage Sale update, now only five weeks out (12 & 13/10) with plenty to do, including:
  • Complete and return the spreadsheet that David emailed to everyone on Sunday, as to your availability from Saturday 21/09 to Monday 14/10.
  • Require volunteers to install our banners asap.
  • Numerous roles and support required including awning installation, collections, sorting, cleaning, electrical checks, cooking eg cakes, etc. There is something for everyone.

Outgoing Exchange Student
Katherine provided a thoughtful snapshot of her life and ambitions, which in summary, is in Year 10 at Hornsby Girls High, lives a Cherrybrook with parents and two siblings, selected Austria as she loves music (eg, Strass and Mozart), the natural beauty of the alps and lakes plus skiing.
Looking forward to the opportunity of both independence and to make some new lifelong friends eg host families.
Thanked the club for giving her this opportunity along with her parents and Janelle for their support.

Guest Speaker: Rob Byrne, Rotary Foundation

Provided us with a very informative insight to the Rotary Foundation which commenced in 1917 with a contribution of US$26.50 and for FY 2019 had US$321.9m and with pledges US$390m+. Their mission is “to do good in the world”.
Their causes have six areas of focus, being: preventing disease, providing clean water, supporting education, growing local economies, saving mothers & children plus promoting peace.
He provided a number of examples as to their projects including Rotary grants and how these are awarded.

Sergeant at Arm’s
John provided a well-researched fine session and extracted many a dollar from those present. He also thanked those few that supported the toga theme for the night.
  • Heads & Tails won by Cawas
  • Raffle won by Max
Keith wrapped up, closed the meeting at about 8.40 and reminded us next week is the club assembly, not to be missed.

This Week's Humour

AN OLD DOBERMAN starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that
he's lost.

Wandering about, he notices a lion heading rapidly in his direction with
the intention of having lunch.

The old Doberman thinks, "Oh, oh! I'm in deep shit now!”

Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down
to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat.

Just as the lion is about to leap, the old Doberman exclaims loudly,

"Boy, that was one delicious lion! I wonder, if there are any more
around here?”

Hearing this, the young lion halts his attack in mid-stride, a look of
terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees.

"Whew!," says the lion, "That was close! That old Doberman nearly had
me!”

Meanwhile, a squirrel who had been watching the whole scene from a
nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it
for protection from the lion. So, off he goes.

The squirrel soon catches up with the lion, spills the beans and strikes
a deal for himself with the lion.

The young lion is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here,
squirrel, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that
conniving canine!”
Now, the old Doberman sees the lion coming with the squirrel on his back
and thinks, "What am I going to do now?," but instead of running, the
dog  sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen
them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old Doberman
says……..

"Where's that squirrel? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another
lion!”

Moral of this story…

Don't mess with the old dogs... Age and skill will always overcome youth
and treachery!

Bull Shit and brilliance only come with age and experience.
