Pres. Rosemary's Report - 3 August 2020
Despite Covid, the club seems to be humming. Committees are in full swing and some activities are happening.
Please remember your club dues either $150 for 6 months or $300 for the year to be paid into the general account. It was wonderful to hear about Gordon and Teresa’s efforts for Cobar Rotary with the drought relief. We can relate to it very well having been involved with Coonabarabran. Please remember to come and pick up a District Directory from me. There is one per member. It will give you a chance to go for a drive and maybe have a cuppa with us if you like. Stay well, stay safe, stay warm and wear a mask when shopping! Rosemary |
Night Report - 3 August 2020
Sergeant John started the Zoom meeting at 7.30pm by asking Kerry to give the toast.
President Rosemary is back from Maroochydore with a broken wrist after slipping over on mossy rocks in the Lamington National Park.
She welcomed Gordon & Terese Hill from Cobar and Dr Anna Vass, who is going to be our newest member.
Thank you to all those that gardened at Taldumande, the yard is now looking a lot better.
Its also nice to see all the committees working.
On August 31st at the Pennant Hills Golf Club there is a combined meeting with Epping, Pennant Hills and our club. Epping & Pennant Hills are happy to go ahead. They want to know numbers but the numbers from the club that want to attend may be minimal.
Rotary information – On Saturday morning President Rosemary attended a Zoom meeting for the first District President’s meeting from the Nambucca Motel. The “quite tiny” relay batten has arrived! The relay batten events are going to happen in April next year as it is the month of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Rotary in Australia & New Zealand. District is asking for people to go on Committee for that.
Next year’s conference is going to be by Zoom & District are going to get the guest speakers videoed in a proper studio for the meeting and they are going to levy everyone $5 for that.
If BBQ trailers are worth more that $10,000 then they need to be covered by own insurance. Tony stated that ours is not worth $10,000 and hence this is not a problem.
District contribution last year to Foundation was $396,274 and Australian Rotary Health was $95,917
District are also working on Covid indemnity forms.
Assembly presentations will be available by the end of August, including Membership.
Director’s Reports:
Club Services – Keith - Cancelled August 10th and August 24th meetings at Springfield as a result of the poll held last week (2:1 against). Rosemary indicated that the Rotaract meeting on the 24th may not be held as the whole idea of the meeting was to be face to face with their office bearers to meet ours. She will follow this up.
He still has around 100 face masks & if you email him, Keith will deliver them or you can pick them up.
Edwina – Vocational – Had first meeting and have draft minutes. Includes going to Woolies store with the view of an appreciation certificate as they have provided an essential service during Covid 19 and presenting them with this at Springfield when face to face meetings are possible. Vocational visit to Australia Post in Dural at night
David – Foundation – Best way to support Foundation is becoming a Centurion with a payment of $100 over the year or a one-off payment with your dues as some have already done. This goes straight to Foundation. Foundation is our charity that we get money back from in the form of grants. An example of this is the Phuket donation.
Peter – International – No update other than to confirm that the money has been transferred to Phuket ($2919), which was a good effort by the Club. Grants haven’t yet to be allocated and will probably be August or September. The Phuket grant is $2,000. This is in addition to the Club donation. David stated that he has been requested to provide a further report on this by RAWCS for the trip to India which is unlikely to happen.
Janelle – Youth – Report on ABC news on Sunday night about Rotary Youth Exchange & impact of COVID 19 on outbounds & inbounds. Our outbound Katherine has opted to stay in Austria & is alive and well and very happy there. Restrictions there have eased a bit so she is getting out and about. She has previously joined the Monday night Zoom meeting but because school has resumed, this now clashes with these meetings and she is unable to join. A meeting with the provisional Rotaract group on a Zoom will be held on Tuesday with Rosemary & Janelle. August 24th face to face meeting will not be held. They now have a domain name. Board agreed earlier in the year to establish a “Principal’s discretionary youth fund”. An amount of money will be made available to the Principals of John Purchase Public, Cherrybrook Public, West Pennant Hills Public and Cherrybrook Technology High School each year. This will be for hardship/disabilities/academic or non-academic purposes. Money is about to be sent out & feedback so far has been “beautiful”.
Colin – Community – Taldumande group. Thanked Cawas for getting morning organised. Also thanked Stan, Edwina, George, Adrian, Bob, the two Tonys and Jason (Rotaract of Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook Provisional Club). Colin B also helped by providing a space to deposit the branches, weeds, etc, from the clean-up.
Another project coming up on Thursday 27th August, (7am to midday) to support a fundraising effort by Inala at Pagewood. Looking for 6 people who enjoy golf. Not going to play golf but will pair up & supervise the activities at 3 holes. Collect funds from the players. Will send an email out looking for 6 volunteers. This is another one of Cawas’s efforts.
Carol – Public Image – Covid has changed everything & hence we can only introduce Dr Anna Vass on Zoom. She has indicated that she wants to join the club.
Anna-
Tony C – Social – have put a calendar together, second draft now awaiting comments from committee members. These social events may or may not go ahead depending on what happens with Covid.
No member talk tonight to keep meeting on schedule.
David T introduced the speakers tonight Gordon & Terese Hill from Cobar Rotary Club.
True Or False – on Rotary history - won by President Rosemary!
Presidents concluding comments – Thanks to Gordon & Therese Hill & Dr Anna Vass. Started to hand out this years District Directories but as can no longer drive if you want one please come & pick them up (with notice)

Anna-
- Born in Hungary & came out with parents in 1956 after the Hungarian revolution.
- Has been married for 50 years. Her husband came to Australia from Hungary in 1957
- Has four daughters. Youngest has 4 children that she used to babysit but they have now moved to Singapore & hence Rotary will help fill in time. Has 11 grandchildren (on website….)
- Currently works as a GP at the Hills Medical Centre. Went to Sydney Uni.
- Interested in Rotary as they do a lot of charity/community work
- Other interests – reading novels & medical journals, was looking after grandchildren. Oldest is 17.
- Attends School of Philosophy at Wahroonga, currently by Zoom
- Also likes share trading
Tony C – Social – have put a calendar together, second draft now awaiting comments from committee members. These social events may or may not go ahead depending on what happens with Covid.
No member talk tonight to keep meeting on schedule.
David T introduced the speakers tonight Gordon & Terese Hill from Cobar Rotary Club.
- Gordon was in Army reserve for 20 years & left in 1985 at rank of Sergeant.
- Worked for PMG (Telecom) for 20 years
- Joined Bush Fire Brigade (RFS), then the SES in 1989 and ended up in Cobar as the SES Regional Officer
- Retired from RFS in 2011, where he was Superintendent
- Gordon is a recipient of Australian Fire Service medal and Emergency Services medal
- Both joined Rotary in Cobar in 2011, Gordon is also a PP
- Going to talk about their Rotary Club’s drought relief program
- Small club – 8 active & 3 “inactive” members
- Started program in 2018 as farmers were doing it tough with drought and a lot of them were missing out on drought relief
- 150 properties in Cobar shire & have assisted them as well as those on the shire boundaries
- Same area as Tasmania
- Use local services to get relief packages, such as grocery packs and vouchers out to farmers including the mail contractor that services all 150 properties. Also have “Mobile Children’s Resources” who run programs for pre-school children out on the properties. They know who is doing it tough & let the club know & will take out grocery packs & dog food
- When started the process only thought that they would be going for a couple of months. Get assistance from other Rotary clubs in NSW and Victoria. Also have charities that assist including the St George Motor Boat Club and from CWA, Gulf Horizons Foundation (now part of Australian Horizons Foundation)
- Put almost $800,00 into the local farming community in the last 2 years
- Provided 495 grocery packs ($100 each), 26 pallets of dog food ($20,220 - for working dogs – no kangaroos around now), 361 fuel vouchers ($30,300), 356 “fresh” meat vouchers ($17,800 - they no longer have stock to butcher for food purposes), 20 road train loads of fodder ($500,000), 353 $100 IGA grocery vouchers ($21,345), 11 pallets of bottled water as the farms rely on tank water for drinking purposes. Totals around $644,000
- Each farming property gets around 8 to 10 bales of fodder that only lasts around 2 to 3 weeks depending on how much stock they have left & then they have to go back & cut bush to keep them alive or increase their bank overdraft, if they can
- Have had some rainfall in the east of Cobar, but the west & north west are still drought declared so still providing drought relief
- St George Motor Boat Club provided money to 28 families with children ($500 each) prior to last Christmas. Also raised $30,600 for another load of fodder in February.
- Have held 2 dinners in Cobar at registered clubs to provide dinner & get farmers away from their properties & to talk to each other and had mental health practitioners there
- Every time they think that they are going to run out of money, other Rotary clubs call to donate more funds
- Even when drought breaks it will take 18 months to 2 years to recover & build up stock numbers
True Or False – on Rotary history - won by President Rosemary!
Presidents concluding comments – Thanks to Gordon & Therese Hill & Dr Anna Vass. Started to hand out this years District Directories but as can no longer drive if you want one please come & pick them up (with notice)

Taldamunde Gardening and Lawns Working Bee - Fri 31 July 2020
Pictures and message from Liz.
Thank you for sharing your lovely photos with me. Looks like you all worked hard tidying the garden and disposing of all those leaves!!! Also looks like it was a nice opportunity to hang out with your friends.
Marisa said ‘it was a lovely day with the volunteers and that you went over and above and even came back to collect the green waste so we didn’t have to organise someone to take it to the tip!’
Thank you for doing this and for making it such a hassle-free day for us. The vege patch, gardens and yard look amazing! You’ve really made a huge difference to the staff and young residents at the property. When the garden is looking lovely it really lifts the spirits and invites everyone to enjoy the outdoors more. So please pass on our heart-felt thanks to everyone who attended on Friday. You’re all so wonderful!
.........Cawas, thanks again! We’re so grateful for your help.
Kind regards
Liz
BBQ Trailer Update
We’re nearly finished! Its been a big job to refurbish the trailer, interrupted by the Coronavirus, but we’re nearly there.
Last Sunday 19 July, we met at Tony Coote’s home for another working bee. Thank you, Tony Coote, Douglas Lam, David Turnbull and Tony Makin for all your work, and especially a big thank you to Glenda and Miriam for the yummy toasties’ sandwiches, mini chicken drumsticks, cakes and lots of coffee.
The main tasks were to clean, repair and paint various trailer components and then install new electrics, door seals, door locks and latches, a new wash station and a new tool box. Its starting to look good
We will meet again next Friday to finish off a few final bits and pieces and then we will take the trailer back to Ricardo’s workshop where Ricardo has volunteered to paint the underside of the trailer with a protective coating.
We will then load up the trailer with all its catering equipment, tables, marquees etc. and return it to its Galston storage ready for our next BBQ project
Thanks again for all your help.
Keep safe.

A husband and his wife went for a divorce at court.

They had a long discussion and replied “Ok sir, we will come again next year with one more”

How Fights Start - thanks Jim
One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift
The next year, I didn't buy her a gift.
When she asked me why, I replied,
"Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!"
And that's how the fight started.....
______________________________
My wife and I were watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed.
I turned to her and said, 'Do you want to have sex?'
'No,' she answered.
I then said, 'Is that your final answer?'
She didn't even look at me this time, simply saying, 'Yes..'
So I said, "Then I'd like to phone a friend."
And that's when the fight started...
________________________________
My wife at her high school reunion, and she kept staring at a drunk swigging his drink as he sat alone at a nearby table.
I asked her, "Do you know him?"
"Yes", she sighed, he's my old boyfriend. He began drinking right after we split up years ago, and hasn't been sober since."
"My God!" I said, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?"
And then the fight started...
________________________________
When our lawn mower broke my wife kept nagging me to get it fixed. But, I always had something else to take care of. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point.
I found her seated in the tall, unmowed grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then
went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the
grass, you might as well sweep the driveway."
The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.
______________________________
My wife sat down next to me as I was flipping channels .
She asked, "What's on TV?"
I said, "Lots of dust."
And then the fight started...
________________________________
My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary.
She said, "I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 165 in about 2 seconds."
I bought her a bathroom scale.
And then the fight started......

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for benefits.
The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's Licence to verify my age.
I looked in my pockets and realized I had left it at home. I told the woman I would have to go home and come back later.
The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'. So I opened my shirt revealing
my curly silver chest hair. She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she processed my Social Security application.
When I got home, I told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office. She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You
might have gotten disability too.'
And then the fight started...

My wife was standing naked, looking in the bedroom mirror.
She was not happy with what she saw and said to me,
"I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.'
I replied, "Your eyesight's damn near perfect."
That's when the fight began . . .
________________________________
I rear-ended a car this morning . . . the start of a really bad day!
The driver got out of the other car, and he was a DWARF!!
He looked up at me and said 'I am NOT Happy!'
So I said, 'Well, which one ARE you then?'
That's how the fight started.

2019 Trivia Night
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 17 August 2019 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,600 all of which will go to assist drought relief. Click this link to read more. |
The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
