Pres. Rosemary's Report - 01 March 2021

Picture
It’s good to be back! Thank you to Keith, the board and you, the members, for keeping things rolling along nicely whilst we were away in Queensland.

Many small events lead to a lot happening – Clean Up Australia Day on this Sunday 7th March, pop-up Book sale hopefully on Saturday March 13, club polo shirts being ordered, District Conference on March 13/14, Friendship gatherings, Rotaract Charter event on Saturday March 27th at Pennant Hills Park at 12pm and the list will continue.

Regarding the District Conference – PLEASE register even if you do not intend to watch it on that day. I’m happy to host a conference viewing session at our home on Sat 13th.

The celebration of Rotary 100 years in Australia and New Zealand (R100) will occur with the unveiling of a new plaque, Rotary sign and upgraded garden at the RFS/Guide Hall site on April 17th . I would like a few people to help organise the event involving invitations to community members, mayors etc where we provide either a bbq or afternoon tea. Watch this space for more details shortly. Thanks to Colin Sharpe for already organising the new rock, plaque and sign.

Please consider attending our next meeting at Springfield on Monday 8th March. The evening coincides with International Women’s Day –(  Yes, I hear you guys!).Our speaker is Jacqui McLachlan who is a Soroptomist. If we don’t get 28 in attendance it affects our general account and there is a limit as to how many times we can pay for non-attendees. It is a partner’s night so please consider attending.

If you are not sure of any events don’t hesitate to call me.

Rosemary

Night Report -  22 February 2021

21 members attending

Toast from Peter. Rotary, Australia and the end to COVID
Sergeant tonight was Janelle, who managed the mob very well.

Rosemary.  Glade to be home.  Reminded members to register for the District Conference even if not going to listen in.  She is happy to host a watching session at her place – including lunch.

Pennant Hills Club has the Director of Public Prosecution speaking to their meeting at Pennant Hills Golf Club on 28th April
Mentioned Australia Day event at Don Moore Centre at North Rocks - 70 attended the Rotary video in the morning and 180 for the afternoon movie.  Epping Club is running a Good Neighbours program, and they will send details to Rosemary, no information obtained about Beecroft.

Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook Rotaract Charter celebration to be held on March 27th at Pennant Hills Park starting at 12 pm.

Only Keith and Colin S had Directors Reports
Keith reminded members to read the email about polo shirts and mentioned the Bunnings BBQ on March 23rd.  Kerry took names of volunteers but will send out email asking for more.  The two missing directors have been found – Max for fundraising, but his first job is to find his replacement and Neville for publicity with Carol standing in when he goes walk-about.

Colin reminded members who volunteered about Clean-up Australia on Sunday 7th – meet at Fire Station at 9 am and bring own gloves.

Neville reminded members that there is a pop-up book sale on 13th March.

No guest speake,r but Neville showed a TED from Australian Actor David Whenam.  Why I became an actor - https://www.ted.com/talks/david_wenham_why_i_became_an_actor  This was well received by the members.
Kerry promoted next weeks speaker- Jacqui McLahlan Soroptimist International.  The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin soror meaning sister, and optima meaning best. And so Soroptimist is perhaps best interpreted as 'the best for women'.  Soroptimist International (SI) is a worldwide volunteer service organization for women who work for peace, and in particular to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. This talk coincides with International Women’s Day next Monday.

Janelle ran a Wildlife quiz in honour of International Wildlife Day next Wednesday.  Very hard questions and no winner was declared. But there was a tie between Max and Bernard for the David Attenborough Wildlife award.

Humour of the Week
Editor's disclaimer:

Below is contributed by Edwina Ruff

From the US of A

Florida senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left.

"Amazing," he thought as he flew down I-95, pushing the pedal even more.
Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a Florida State Trooper, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this!" and pulled over to await the trooper's arrival.
Pulling in behind him, the trooper got out of his vehicle and walked up to the Corvette. He looked at his watch, then said, "Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a new reason for speeding--a reason I've never before heard -- I'll let you go."
The old gentleman paused then said: "Three years ago, my wife ran off with a Florida State Trooper. I thought you were bringing her back.”
"Have a good day, Sir," replied the trooper.

Georgia
The owner of a golf course in Georgia was confused about paying an invoice, so he decided to ask his secretary for some mathematical help.
He called her into his office and said, "Y'all graduated from the University of Georgia and I need some help.  If I wuz to give yew $20,000, minus 14%, how much would you take off?"
The secretary thought a moment, and then replied, "Everthang but my earrings."

Mississippi
The young man from Mississippi came running into the store and said to his buddy, "Bubba, somebody just stole your pickup truck from the parking lot!"
Bubba replied, "Did y'all see who it was?"
The young man answered, "I couldn't tell, but I got the license number."

North Carolina
A man in North Carolina had a flat tire, pulled off on the side of the road, and proceeded to put a bouquet of flowers in front of the car and one behind it. Then he got back in the car to wait.
A passerby studied the scene as he drove by, and was so curious he turned around and went back.  He asked the fellow what the problem was.
The man replied, "I got a flat tahr."
The passerby asked, "But what's with the flowers?"
The man responded, "When you break down they tell you to put flares in the front and flares in the back. I never did understand it neither."

Tennessee
A Tennessee State trooper pulled over a pickup on I-65.  The trooper asked, "Got any ID?"
The driver replied, "Bout whut?"

Texas
The Sheriff pulled up next to the guy unloading garbage out of his pick-up into the ditch. The Sheriff asked, "Why are you dumping garbage in the ditch?  Don't you see that sign right over your head."
"Yep," he replied. "That's why I'm dumpin' it here, 'cause it says: 'Fine For Dumping Garbage.' "

The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 17 August 2019 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,600 all of which will go to assist drought relief. Click this link to read more.

 The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.

Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result.

What it takes to be a Rotarian

There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club.  From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure.  The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
