Pres.  Rosemary's Report - 02 June 2021

Picture
On Wednesday evening we attended Pennant Hills Rotary meeting to hear an excellent speaker DPP  Lloyd Babb. A very enjoyable meeting and Max took out first prize in the raffle.

The Coonabarabran Equestrian event is on this coming weekend and there are bound to be many stories to tell from the 17 people who are helping.

Please think about helping with the mini-Book sale on Saturday  June 12. It is the Saturday of the long weekend, but we would appreciate a couple of hours help from as many as possible. Thank you to Neville and Andrew for the organisation. It is Neville’s swan song before he heads off into the wide blue yonder in his caravan! Thanks Neville.

The social lunch organised by Tony Coote at Sydney Rowing Club on June 20  should be very enjoyable. We hope for fine weather!

The Pride of Workmanship evening is our regular Monday meeting at Springfield on June 21. It is always a great  evening so be sure to come along. Partners are always welcome. The dress is Business Casual.

And finally, our Changeover in on Sunday 27 at Springfield for lunch. Please come along to celebrate the year that was and to welcome in the new President and board. The dress is lounge suit/jacket with tie optional.
Stay warm, stay safe and keep well.

Rosemary

Night Report -  02 June 2021

The meeting on Wednesday 2 June was a combined meeting with the Pennant Hills Rotary (PH) Club and our club, held at the Pennant Hills Golf Club.
PH Rotary club president, David Firth welcomed everyone to the meeting.
President Rosemary also welcomed everyone and said that it was wonderful to be back here (PH Rotary Club) as our (Rosemary belonged to this club for a short time then) origins go back to 1976 and to see so many lovely faces including Jack Reid. Jack was inducted into PH club in 1963!
  • 17 members are going to Coonabarabran this weekend to help Coonabarabran Rotary cater for the NSW school kids equestrian event with “cold weather & mice thrown in”
  • We have a mini book sale on Saturday 12 June (long weekend) at the Uniting Church
  • On Monday 21 June (meeting) we have our Pride of Workmanship. Have secured David Firth to be our speaker.  PH club started Pride Of Workmanship in 1976
  • On Sunday 27 June we have our changeover lunch at Springfield

Theo Glockemann (OAM) introduced the speaker, Lloyd Babb, who is the current NSW Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Lloyd (54) attained his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degrees from Macquarie University in 1989.  He was awarded a Rotary International Foundation Scholarship, which enabled him to complete a Masters in Criminal Justice from the University of Illinois at Chicago (he completed this under the Rotary scholarship). He was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1991, but this was soon followed by another period of study abroad, this time as a visiting fellow at Copenhagen University’s Institute of Criminology between September 1992 and June 1993.
He returned to Australia in November 1993 and after a brief spell in DJ Fisher and Associates he moved to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, where he served as a solicitor advocate.
Lloyd Babb began practicing at the bar in August 1995, at 5th Floor Wentworth Chambers. He gave generously of his time and expertise, serving on the Bar Association’s Criminal Law Committee, Professional Conduct Committee 4 and the Bar Council between 1997 and 2001.

In 1999 he was appointed as a crown prosecutor and so began more than a decade of service to the people of New South Wales. In 2004 he was appointed director of the Criminal Law Review Division of the Attorney General’s Department. In 2007 he was appointed as crown advocate for a seven year term and in October of that year he took silk.

On 18 July 2011 Lloyd Babb SC became the new director of public prosecutions in New South Wales (replacing Nicholas Cowdrey) He is currently a member of the NSW sentencing council.
In making his announcement about the appointment of Mr Babb, the Attorney General at the time, Greg Smith SC, said: ‘Mr Babb has proven himself to be a lawyer of the highest quality, who is well versed with all aspects of criminal law. Mr Babb’s appointment is for 10 years’.
Lloyd has a 23 year old son and lives in Hornsby.  His wife Annette unfortunately died a while ago.

Lloyd Babb DPP
He thanked Rotary as he said that he probably wouldn’t have held the positions he has held without being a Rotary Foundation scholar where he attended the University of Illinois (sponsored by the St Ives Rotary club). He studied there for one year and then was able to extend this to an additional year where he as a public defender in the Cook County juvenile court. The crimes there were far more serious than the crimes back in Sydney. This was due to them have far more guns and gang problems and hence far more violence.  For a criminal lawyer, this was quite a wonderful experience to be representing these young people. They had a 3 strike and you are out policy that meant if you were an adult, you then went to jail for the rest of your life.  As a result, they would get the children to transport the drugs as they were exempt from the 3 strikes policy.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) prosecutes serious crime in NSW and is generally involved in murder, rape, armed robbery, serious acts of violence and any trial that is going to end up before a jury or for sentencing in the district or supreme courts.  They do go to local courts as that’s where criminal trial start & where the decision is made whether the matter will proceed on to the higher courts.  He was instrumental in a fundamental change in the system, which was called the “early appropriate guilty pleas reform”.  “Encouraging earlier guilty pleas deliver swifter, more certain justice and reduce stress for victims and court delays”.
He tries to maintain the same prosecutor in serious crime trials “for the cradle to the grave”, which is a significant change as previously the senior prosecutor who would come into the later trials, would come into the matter quite late in the peace.
As the State’s independent prosecutor, the ODPP:
  • decides whether a prosecution should proceed, based on the public interest and the available evidence
  • ensures the charges laid are supported by the evidence
  • prepares cases and presents them in court.
The ODPP prosecutes about 18,000 matters a year. These include:
  • committal proceedings in the Local Court and Children's Court, to decide whether there is enough evidence for a matter to go to trial
  • trials in the District Court and the Supreme Court
  • appeals, in the District Court, Court of Criminal Appeal and High Court
  • hearings in the Local Court and the Children’s Court.
The OPP has 10 offices in NSW, four in Sydney and six in major regional centres.
The people that work for the ODPP are incredibly committed people that “want to do good”. 67% are women and is a “reflection of the greater willingness of women to do things for the public service and being less motivated by money”.  Also, he has been a good flexible employer and people (women) are able to have career breaks to raise their family and to work part time and have a long and successful career in the job.
It’s a challenging job that can take its toll and you need a good system in place to keep you resilient and not get ground down by the issues that you are dealing with.
Lloyd spent some time telling us about a number of very interesting trials that he has been involved with during his time as DPP.  However, they are too numerous and detailed to include in this night report!
As his 10 year tenure is nearly up (3 weeks to go) he is now in the process of joining the Navy reserves and has just done 16 days of pretty intense physical training, with 6 further weeks of training to go, including going to sea. He will then be available to go and work with the Navy in their own criminal justice system.  He looking forward to opportunity to lead their dedicated people and the people he has met in the Navy all seem to value community service.

SYMT Presents "The Addams Family" on Friday 9 July

Picture
“The Addams Family” presented by Sydney Youth Musical Theatre at Hornsby RSL Club, 7:30pm on Friday 9 July 2021 Tickets $37.00.

The Addams Family have lived in their unique values for hundreds of years; however, the family encounters an unforeseen obstacle when Wednesday, now eighteen years old, decides to introduce her new “normal” boyfriend, Lucas Beineke, to the family. Wednesday has found herself experiencing a surprising new sensation, one that frightens both her and her family; she has fallen in love. In protest, Uncle Fester enlists the help of the Addam’s ancestors to call an end to the young budding romance. Morticia, Gomez and Pugsley worry about her changing ways. As the Addams and Beinekes come together for dinner one fateful evening, chaos ensues, and the two families find themselves admitting deep secrets and come together in ways they never would have imagined. The Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations: change.

Guests welcome, eg grandchildren. As with previous productions the suggestion is we dine in the bistro prior to the show, say 6.00pm.
Please make your payment ($37.00pp) into the club’s General Account by 30 June and identify your payment with your Surname and "SYMT".

What it takes to be a Rotarian

There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club.  From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure.  The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
