President Keith's Report 30 August 2021

Our speaker tonight was Steve Paterson.  During the presentation his humanity was evident, however, his fantastic photographic skills excelled.
It was good to see Stuart Armstrong, our AG, visit our Club.
Terrific to see Howard Fleming Zoom in from Renmark.  For those that do not know, Howard is one of two inaugural Club members.
Next week our speaker is Sharon Edington – Rotary Peace Scholar.
I have received information on the Zone 8 Virtual Conference to be held 11-12 September.  Amongst the exceptional Rotary Speakers, is a past outgoing exchange student from our Club, Ngaire Ralph.

ALEX JUGUETA - Biography

He migrated to Australia from the Philippines with his young family at a time when Australia was gripped by the recession in 1991. Although he held an esteemed position as a Civil Engineer in Manila, he and his wife elected to migrate to Australia because he wanted to provide a better future for his 3 children. He and his wife began their life here in Australia with very little assistance raising their 3 children due to a lack of a family support network, therefore forcing, encouraging and motivating them to succeed on their own.
Arriving in Australia during the recession, finding a job for Alex in the construction industry was very difficult, to say the least. Because of this, he then decided to study part-time, enrolling in a 5-year Structural Engineering degree at UTS. Raising 3 young children, studying, and doing a part-time job was tireless work for both him and his wife.
Persistence, determination and hard work paid off when he finished his Australian Engineering degree at UTS in 1997. This allowed him to gain employment in the construction industry; a field in which he is extremely passionate about.
With hard work and perseverance, he and his wife have raised their children responsibly and provided them with the best possible education they could provide. As his children have now reached adulthood, they are now contributing in their own ways to our society and community.
After years of consistent hard work in his professional field of engineering, he then developed a passion for ‘Spartan Races’, ‘Tough Mudders’, ‘Enduro Races’, and other endurance events in which he competed in for nearly 10 years. He has then switched his passion to boxing, Muay Thai and high-intensity training in the UFC gym. His next venture is to do cycling with the intent to join cycling events in the near future.
He joined the Rotary Club not because someone had recruited him to join. He believes it's time to return the favour to the community and with the Rotary, he can be of help in any way he can through being a member of the Rotary club.

R100 Garden

Three months have passed  since the formal “opening “ of our R100 garden at the RFS/Girl Guide site. With some tender love from Anne and Tim Sharpe who covered the garden with leaf mulch and Rosemary who often weeds it on her local walks, it is flourishing.
Every plant is doing well, the DG’s plant is flowering along with several others. When you are in the area pop in to check up on it. It adds to the attractiveness of Cherrybrook.

Westmead Institute of Medical Research
“COVID -19 Variants and Vaccines, the Lockdown update”

COVID-19: Variants & Vaccines, the Lockdown Update - YouTube

The presentation was accurate as of 9th July 2021. Some widening of the age group acceptability for the AstraZeneca vaccine have been made since that presentation date.
The 2 main speakers were Internationally renowned experts in immunology and vaccine development, Professor Tony Cunningham and Professor Sarah Palmer.
I have attached a link to that presentation. It is well worth watching.
I also took some Notes and attach for those who only wish to get a quick grab - but the notes don’t do the presentation justice.

Kind Regards
Colin McGowan

We are enjoying our restricted freedom while we can. We are having dinner at the Football Club next door to our camp site. We took our masks off to eat. To enter the club we must register with the QR code with our phones and wear our masks all the time. The South Australian Regs requires us to wear masks all the time when outside.
We are working our way home after the state borders open. Howard and Megan.

 The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.

What it takes to be a Rotarian

There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club.  From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure.  The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.

  • to be invited
  • to be of a certain age
  • to be male
  • to be a business person
  • to be retired
  • to attend meetings every week
  • to be available on weekends.

Must have:
  • a sense of humour
  • a willingness to give back to your community
  • a willingness to pitch in when required
  • some time available to help out on the occasional weekend event
  • an interest in the life of the West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook communities
  • a desire to contribute in some way to the running of the Club.
