BBQ Trailer Upgrade Project
On Sunday 22nd March, before the current Coronavirus social restrictions, the project team met at the RFS site for a working bee to strip and clean the BBQ trailer. Thank you, Tony Coote, Peter Stanton, Neville Hansen, Tony Makin, Andrew Little, David Turnbull, Douglas Lam, Ricardo Raad and Paul Laroumanie, for all your work on the day or beforehand.
We stripped the trailer of all its contents, the old BBQ’s and fittings before pressure cleaning years of built up grease and grime.
During a mid-morning break, whilst we were enjoying some yummy pastries and drinks that Ricardo kindly brought along, there was a very active group discussion of various ideas on how to best install the new BBQ’s into the trailer. In true Rotary style there were many, many ideas proposed, with plenty of spirited debate and often with contradictory opinions. Pleasingly, in the end the team came together and all agreed on a much-simplified plan for the BBQ installations which will improve the functionality of the trailer and make it much easier to clean after use…. good job everyone.
The trailer is now at Ricardo’s workshop getting the once over before he replaces or repairs various items, followed by touch up spray painting, before refitting all various components and new BBQ’s. At the same time Tony C and Peter have been getting quotes and ordering new items such as a new stainless-steel drip tray to go under the BBQ’s, electrical items, front storage box, wash up facilities, etc. Peter and Ricardo are now liaising to undertake much of the work…thanks guys.
The timing to complete the remaining work will very much depend on the regulations required to comply with the Coronavirus regulations and will most likely be done with no more than two people working on the job at any one time.
Finally, I must thank Tony Coote for all the work he has done putting together and leading this project to date and for his work in coordinating the project spending so that we can fully utilise the $5k Government grant before it expires on 30 June. Tony has now asked me to coordinate the project to completion, which I am happy to do.
I’ll keep everyone updated on progress.
Keep safe.

Rotary Giant Book Sale |
13, 14 & 15 March 2020 |
The West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook Rotary Club had a successful 2020 Book Sale on Friday 13th, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th April, raising about $15,000 despite all that is happening now.
Thank you so much to the public for supporting our efforts. Books and reading are still very popular activities in this area.
The book sale is a great way for our members to participate in community service to raise funds for well deserving charities and local community projects that are undertaken by our club. It also provides fellowship, satisfaction and enjoyment of working together as a team.
We would like to thank everyone that either came along to help during our book sort days, the lead up preparation to the book sale, or during the sale itself, including members sons & daughters, Probus club members, students and other friends of Rotary.
Once again, the Sunday clearance sale, where customers could buy good quality books, records, DVDs and CDs by the bag, proved to be extremely popular.
Many customers commented on the high quality of the books, including how well organised the overall layout was with fiction books sorted by author surname and non-fiction sorted into 34 main categories, which allowed them to easily find what they were looking for.
Thanks also to the Cherrybrook Uniting Church for use of their premises and support for the book sale.
The West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook Rotary Club would like to thank all those who generously donated books, records, DVDs and CDs. Without your kind generosity, the book sale would not have been the success that it was.
Regards Rosemary

Hi all,
A few words on Rotary activity… Container Foundations The nature of this work has changed. Three tradesmen (Tom, Gino and a professional posthole digger) will proceed with the foundations work at Galston. Adrian and I will no longer be at the site. I have the site key and am doubting whether the toilet key will arrive today as promised. I will hand the key(s) to Gino in the next two days. I have yet to secure a toilet key – a job for tomorrow. ZOOM Meetings I am still learning more about ZOOM. Neville and I held a ZOOM meeting on Sunday. Tony M and I held a similar meeting on Monday. Tomorrow night a meeting of four (Tony, Douglas, Neville and Self) are scheduled to meet and learn about a conversations that involve more than two persons. The subject matter for the meeting is “How to commence Rotary Meetings via Zoom on Monday Nights” I know of two Clubs that have commenced Meetings via Zoom. We will start small, say 30 minutes and include a “Job Talk” and then as we gain experience introduce third party speakers. I will keep you posted on this initiative. Face Masks Neville has already contacted you about face masks and an article is below in this Bulletin. What have you been doing? If you wish to share significant events in your life with other members then consider placing an article in the Club Bulletin. The address is [email protected] I hope you all stay safe and well. 30th March
Hi all,
The below email is from Wendy Carritt who is making face masks and has committed 200 masks to Cherrybrook Medical Centre on Monday 6 April.
I talked to Wendy today and here is a quick summary:
Therefore what is needed: We need to channel it through one person.
Please remember the only reasons we are allowed to leave our home are 1. Work/Education, 2. Fitness, 3. Groceries, 4. Pharmacy/Medical supplies. I am sure the drop offs could be done as part of one of the above outings
Pls stay safe.
I know there are a couple of other people doing the same (making masks) , so there could be more requirements.

Subject: More Face Masks made for Family or Friends in Need
Yesterday 35 Probus friends picked up masks, so 53 of our members now have access to a mask. We all followed the social distancing guidelines with much throwing of masks in sprayed plastic bags 😱. It was lovely just to be able to see so many of our Club.
A further 10 masks were donated to the Cherrybrook Medical Centre who were extremely pleased with them as now their front line reception staff are no longer exposed and can all be masked up when greeting patients.
My thanks go to Margaret McGowan, Helen Baptiste, Bev Davison, Hilda, Carolyn, Karin, and Manja (hope I didn’t forget anyone) who brought around either elastic or material so I can continue production.
Because of the popularity of the first round, I am today making another 50 masks. So if anyone would still like a mask or an extra mask, have family who need masks, or friends in the front line (teachers, nurses etc) let me know and you can have up to 3. They will have to be picked up tomorrow (Friday) after 9.30am. Just send me an email reply or ring me. I will respond to emails after 8pm.
If anyone has any lightweight material they could drop around to me that would be much appreciated. I intend to continue production over the next 2 weeks and beyond if necessary until my filter fabric runs out. The next lot will be available to anyone at the end of next week.
Five Probus ladies have already requested the pattern and instructions to make their own. I can forward same to anyone else who is interested.
Stay safe
Warm wishes to each of you.

Hi all,
The below email is from Wendy Carritt who is making face masks and has committed 200 masks to Cherrybrook Medical Centre on Monday 6 April.
I talked to Wendy today and here is a quick summary:
- The masks are not certified but are made from material with a inner filter fabric.
- They are ideal to stop you sneezing on people and touching your face. They are also washable.
- Wendy has enough elastic to make 50 of the 200 masks thus needs another 100m of either hat elastic or 3mm flat elastic.
- Wendy is also running out of filter material. The filter material (non-woven fabric) can be purchased at spotlight and the Liquor land shopping bags are ideal. Flannelette sheets also makes good filter material.
- Ideally only one person dropping all the stock to Wendy.
Therefore what is needed: We need to channel it through one person.
- Someone to volunteer where the stock can be dropped at on their porch from the Rotary people.
- Rotary People donate the above materials.
- The materials need to be delivered to Wendy by Saturday pm 4 April.
Please remember the only reasons we are allowed to leave our home are 1. Work/Education, 2. Fitness, 3. Groceries, 4. Pharmacy/Medical supplies. I am sure the drop offs could be done as part of one of the above outings

This Week's Humour / Interesting Facts
EMPLOYEE NOTICE
Due to the current financial situation caused by the Corona Virus and slowdown in the economy, the Government has decided to implement a scheme to put workers of 50 years of age and above on early, mandatory retirement, thus creating jobs and reducing unemployment. This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged People Early).
Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to the Government to be considered for the SHAFT program (Special Help After Forced Termination).
Persons who have been RAPED and SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW program (System Covering Retired-Early Workers).
A person may be RAPED once, SHAFTED twice and SCREWED as many times as the Government deems appropriate. Persons who have been RAPED could get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependents & Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel Early Severance). Obviously persons who have AIDS or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by the Government.
Persons who are not RAPED and are staying on will receive as much SHIT (Special High Intensity Training) as possible. The Government has always prided themselves on the amount of SHIT they give our citizens. Should you feel that you do not receive enough SHIT, please bring this to the attention of your TD, who has been trained to give you all the SHIT you can handle.
Sincerely,
The Committee for Economic Value of Individual Lives (E.V.I.L.)
PS - Due to Corona Virus, recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil, as well as current market conditions, The Light at the End of the Tunnel has been turned off.
Thanks Colin S

Assistance for Bushfire Victims and Firefighters
The Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook have discussed a number of options to assist our Bushfire victims and Firefighters. The NSW and VIC Governments are indicating they do not want any more physical donations of goods as they are overwhelmed and are recommending donating cash.
If you would like to donate, attached is the link to the RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) page where you can donate through Rotary and as always, what you give is what will be delivered. No overheads.

If you would like to donate through other organisations, then the Sydney Morning Herald had an article on Sunday 5th Jan, with a number of reputable organisations.

As always, thank you for your support, Happy New Year and give generously.

What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
