President Keith's Report 27 September 2021
I found Greg Ross an interesting speaker for Australian Rotary Health.
I need to wax lyrical about the leadership of Cawas. He has progressed the Street Library project to a stage of seeking approval in principle from the Board. Three members have volunteered to have a library outside their house. I listened to a working committee meeting on Tree of Joy. This project is advancing because of Cawas’ resolve. The issue currently at hand is that the Charities have lost contact with their customers. Our next formal meeting is 11th October. Don’t be surprised if you are asked to wear a hat in support of Lift The Lid -- Hat Day. Our Guest Speaker is Cecile Schuldiener talking on Street Libraries. Next Monday is an informal, unstructured meeting as it’s a Public Holiday. Stay Safe Keith |

Monday night’s rotary meeting was joined by Barry Freeman and the following points were raised.
• Tony Coote was to talk to the district Insurance man.
• Keith Ball is a die hard ARL supporter.
• Social restrictions are to ease at 70% double jab.
• At 80% double jab there will be 10 people allowed in the home and 20 outdoors with social distancing in place.

• Max was asking about fundraising when we come out of lockdown.
• Annual book sale to be held on Saturday 13th of November.
• Carol Russell is putting an article in the Dooral Roundup.
• No updates on youth.
• Future of zoom versus face to face.
• Pandemic is having effects on the mental health.
• Lift the lid on Mental health has been extended to rotary clubs in Australia.
Guest speaker was Gregory Ross. At 28 he joined rotary in 1976 and this has been a large part of his life ever since.
He helped build an eye clinic in Vanuatu and led a GSE team to California.
A Rotarian with North Balwyn since 1986, Greg served as District 9800 Governor in 1991/92 and joined the Board of Australian Rotary Health in 2013. He created Lift the Lid on Mental Illness, a national campaign to reduce mental illness through prevention research, and served as ARH Chairman until December 2020.
Best known to older Australian audiences as one of the cops in the long running television series Cop Shop, Greg has been a professional actor and singer since graduating from NIDA in 1967. Over the past 14 years, he has also conducted over 1,200 services as a funeral celebrant.
Television credits include Homicide, Bellbird, Prisoner, Ocean Girl, Blue Heelers, Neighbours, Division 4, Matlock Police, Boney, Skippy, City Homicide, House Husbands and Superwog. Plays include One Day of the Year, Absurd Person Singular and Don’s Party. Stage musical roles include Judas in Godspell, Pedro in Man of La Mancha, Javert in Les Misérables and Capt von Trapp in the Sound of Music, opposite Lisa McCune.
With Carole, Greg raised three children, Simon, Arna and Sophie, who, until COVID hit, all performed professionally in Australia and overseas. Greg loves sport generally, plays tennis, follows the Melbourne Demons and Storm and is an active life member of youth leadership organisation, Lord Somers camp and Power House.
He suggested with Gladys Berejiklian we are optimistic about the future with Daniel Andrews the opposite.
When he joined rotary the vote against women being involved in rotary was 46-1. He is pleased that there are many women involved in rotary today.
Rotary is a group of people with many talents pledged to help those in need.
He witnessed paint your heart out Australia where members of various rotary groups where involved in painting 1,000 houses for people in need. He has witnessed 6 premierships in his lifetime.
In the old days he suggested ¼ of the population would go to the football.
He has had lunch with Ron Barassi.
Australian rotary health support infant death syndrome. Research has shown that babies lying face down were more prone to sudden infant death syndrome.
He mentioned that 1 in 2 people will suffer from mental illness.
The Rotary Club of Victor Harbour raised $70,000 on an outback drive from Victor Harbour to Broken Hill.
Australian rotary health is the greatest rotary project.
Laura Heart and Claire Kelly are involved in mental health for students.
He commented what you eat determines your health written by Phyllis Jacka. 2015 rotary received its first million-dollar bequest.

“COVID -19 Variants and Vaccines, the Lockdown update”
COVID-19: Variants & Vaccines, the Lockdown Update - YouTube
The presentation was accurate as of 9th July 2021. Some widening of the age group acceptability for the AstraZeneca vaccine have been made since that presentation date.
The 2 main speakers were Internationally renowned experts in immunology and vaccine development, Professor Tony Cunningham and Professor Sarah Palmer.
I have attached a link to that presentation. It is well worth watching.
I also took some Notes and attach for those who only wish to get a quick grab - but the notes don’t do the presentation justice.
Kind Regards
Colin McGowan

Hi All Members.
We are not the only travellers planning to get home. We had Happy Hour with two couples from Tasmania last night plus they have two friends who altogether are planning on getting home to Tassie. They have applied for a Victorian border pass which gives them 24 hours from crossing the border to arrive at the ferry terminal in Melbourne otherwise they have to go into quarantine. Another Tassie traveller in Queensland returning home had to divert into Northern Territory then to South Australia and then make a run for the Ferry.
That prevented them from being put into quarantine in the eastern states.
Cheers. Howard and Megan.

The Garage Sale 2019
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 12 & 13 October raising a gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |
What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
