Comment on Christmas Market

Dear Rotary Club members of West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook,
I would like to thank you for organizing such a beautiful event this Saturday. Having moved to West Pennant Hills from Europe a few years ago this was the first Christmas market I attended in Australia. I went with my kids and my parents, and everyone really enjoyed themselves.
We also bought some sweet treats from the lovely older ladies downstairs in the hall. One of those treats was a Christmas cake, it was the best Christmas cake my family and I have ever had. Dreaming of the amazing flavors of this cake I now have a cheeky question to ask: would it be possible to somehow get the recipe of this fantastic Christmas cake? I will attach a picture for reference, so you know what I am talking about. As a hobby baker myself I really appreciate homemade treats.
Thank you in advance.
Kind regards,
Lisa

NTA Donors Tour
The Rotary members on the donor’s trip to visit the Nusa Tenggara Association (NTA) operations in Flores have arrived in Bali.
Peter, Andrew, John & Tony have had a few days relaxation prior to travelling to Flores tomorrow.
We were invited to the Rotary Club of Bali Seminyak’s meeting last Tuesday and we greatly appreciated their wonderful hospitality.
Afterwards we had an important meeting with key Board members from Rotary and NTA to discuss support for our proposed global grant application for the water & sanitation project in West Timor, including the roles and responsibilities of all parties.

Hi Janelle
Yes, Tony arrived okay last night, and we went out today to the local upmarket shopping centre so he could buy some appropriate shoes for Flores.
Unfortunately, we went to a cultural fire dance this evening and a very naughty monkey pinched his glasses and mangled them!
Anyway, he managed to get the bits back, but one arm is missing. Luckily, he has another spare pair back at the hotel.
Off tomorrow to Maumere on 11.05am flight via Kupang (West Timor).

Dear all,
Thank you so much for your commitment to be at Grace’s Place this weekend to assist with the preparation of the centre for the Government unveiling ceremony taking place Monday 14 November. We appreciate your help so much.

Hi Tony,
Thank you so much for calling and speaking to Sana yesterday and my apologies for the delay in contacting you. I have been working very limited hours post event, as well as taking time off whilst my mum is visiting from the UK. I am in today and wanted to contact to say a HUGE thank you to you, Janelle and everyone at West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook Rotary for the incredible efforts, time and delicious food at my event in Metcalfe Park a week last Sunday. It was a wonderful and amazing day and to have you and your members come along and be a part of it really helped to make the event the success that it was. I am so very grateful and truthfully could not do these events without people and organisations like you.
I estimate that we had 1,200 people attend. The exact figure is tough to know as not everyone checked in at the registration. This is something we’re now reflecting on improving next year. We couldn’t do QR code check in due to some website platform limitations making it more difficult than we’d have liked, but we did a rough count on the day we think this figure is about right.
I have also attached our banking information as requested by Janelle. She mentioned that you would like to make a donation which is so incredibly generous. I appreciate this so much. Does this have everything you need?
Thank you once again for the wonderful work on the day. People loved the food and I had so many wonderful comments about you all after the event. It was such a joy to meet you all and thank you once again for your amazing contribution.
Thanks so much and do let me know if you have any questions.

Rotary Car Run |
Sunday 13th November |
Check the tyres and oil, it's time for our annual car run.
We will try and stay clear of the soggy areas and flood affected roads and head north to roads less travelled.
Starting at 9am in the carpark at McDonalds, Thornleigh.
Heading north via Hornsby on the old Pacific Highway to Kariong, Pearl Beach and East Gosford then to the Top Point Cafe and Japanese Garden at Gosford Regional Gallery, 36 Webb St East Gosford.
Maps will be handed out at start on the day.
Lots to see on the way and an interesting venue for lunch with Art Gallery, Gardens and Gift shop for the Ladies.
Please let me know if you are coming so I can confirm numbers with the cafe.
You may like to car pool.

I was born in Malta, the eldest of 11 children. I did my primary schooling at the local school then did my secondary at the Lyceum where I obtained my General Certificate of Education.
The family migrated to Australia in September 1966 as “Ten Pound Poms’.
I immediately found and started work with an insurance company and obtained my Insurance Certificates. Leaving the Insurance company, I then worked for a finance company. Again continued financial studies.
As I had an interest in motor vehicles and my uncle had a Chrysler/ Mitsubishi Dealership, I joined the family business. In the early seventies, an American system was introduced in Australia where car dealerships had in-house staff connected with finance and insurance companies to assist prospective clients. It was the beginning of the Business Manager role in the big dealerships
With the introduction of new privacy and financial services laws. I took further studies and obtained my Financial Services Certificate. When the family business was sold, I established my own consultancy, became a locum where I would, train, and mentor dealerships Business Manager. I also replaced the dealership Business Manager when they were unavailable.
At the same time, I obtained my Finance Brokers Licence and specialized in financing cars, trucks and machinery. In 2000, I went to Gippsland in Victoria to do some locum work at a dealership then owned by Sydney-sider Nick Polites. I ended staying there for about 13 years and when he sold the business and I decided to retire. I now keep busy by taking small maintenance jobs around the retirement village where I live
I am not a sporting fellow but do enjoy woodwork, have renovated a couple of houses.
I have two daughters, Naomi and Meaghan. 14 years ago, Naomi and her partner gave me my only grandson Lachlan. They live in Melbourne. Meaghan has no children and lives in Canada.
I met Mary, at a family reunion. My mother and Mary’s mother had been friends since they were teenagers and both the families stayed in touch. My parents decided to return to Malta and in 2019, my mother came back for a holiday. Mary was invited to a family reunion in Melbourne and both our lives changed.
My Community Service:
I was inducted in the Rotary Club of Boroondara Sunrise Vic in 1990. I served as Club Secretary I was club President 1994-1995. In 2002, I transferred to the Rotary Club of Heidelberg and 2004 when I moved to Gippsland, I transferred to The Rotary Club of Traralgon. There, I served as Secretary and Community Service Director. I was also President 2007-2008. I also served District 9820 as Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) chair between 10 years. two years as Assistant Governor The club honoured me with my 1st Paul Harris Fellow in 2010 culminating in my 3rd Sapphire in 2019
In 2021 I moved to live in Sydney and tranferred the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook
On the 27th February 2021 I also had the honour of being invested as a Knight of Honour in the Order of St John Of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaler.
I enjoy my community service as I believe that Australia has always been kind to me and now I like to return this by assisting those that are less fortunate.

John
