2017 Garage Sale
This Weekend was the culmination of a Great Event
Our Best Garage Sale on Record
Some Comments from Colin
The garage sale is over for another year with what promises to be a record cash sales result.
A great effort given the new things that we tried including giving up large furniture and general books.
I would like to personally thank all members, partners, family members and friends who contributed their time, according to their availability. Also, those who gave space in their homes/garages to store and sort goods and those who contributed their special skills to make the sale such a success. Having Neville, as an outstanding project manager, supported by a willing committee was an essential. Neville, his committee and other garage sale stalwarts devoted many hands-on hours for over a month before the sale, during the sale and the Monday afterward, so thank you very much garage sale team. I think the debrief identified some opportunities for even more improvement next year.
The following quote from a message Dolores sent to Anne. It captures the essence of what our club is: “Just had a great weekend – just luv all your Rotary friends – they are just the nicest people n lots of fun… and a great cause – restores faith in humanity eh?. I just loved the food all weekend – it was such a treat – was not once hungry or thirsty without being taken care of … at end nibbles I had a bun with bacon, asparagus n satay sauce – a Rita invention – was to die for – just luv her boys too – met a great bunch of people n felt cherished.”

It was pleasing to see that we had almost nothing to dispose of from bric-a-brac – the skip was almost empty – and there was also very little compactable left over from the other stalls thanks to those who found homes for our left overs. Even the left over plants found a home in the Rotary Garden at the Fire Station and the Station had a new fire truck delivered today.
Now you can get back to the list of house chores that have been on hold for the last few weeks.

Thank You and Good News Stories
Hi all, I would like thank everyone for their contribution to the Garage Sale and there are so many good news stories which came out of the whole Garage Sale and I would like to share some with you.
From the gold coin entry fee and entry in a raffle we estimate we had up to 1200 people attend over the two days which is similar to last year.
Here are some of the items donated to make the Garage Sale such a success
Then in cleaning up on Sunday we were so lucky as what we threw away was in majority rubbish. When we turned up on Monday morning the 10 ton skip was empty.
Rotary's motto "Service above Self" has been very much demonstrated over the Garage Sale period.
Thank you again everyone for your support and I believe fellowship won the weekend.
Tony is still crunching the final $ numbers.
Neville
From the gold coin entry fee and entry in a raffle we estimate we had up to 1200 people attend over the two days which is similar to last year.
Here are some of the items donated to make the Garage Sale such a success
- SMS who Clive works for donated all the bins and the garbage truck on Monday to pickup the large pile of rubbish we created.
- ESI (Event Services International) donated the following items; all the crowd control steel fencing, 22 tables, star pickets and 11 Marquees thanks to Tom
- Marayong Primary School donated 4 Marquees thanks to Rosemary
- Bendigo Bank at Dural donated 4 Marquees thanks to our connections.
- Yellow Brick Road donated the loan of 1 Marquee thanks to Carol.
- The public including Rotarians were so generous as by Thursday night we had run out of room in the awning, the Girl Guide Hall, Turnbull's, Sharp's, Hansen's, Degabriele's and Craig's.
- Daniel had organised some 400 Century 21 bags
- We would have been lost without Tom's truck and crew.
- Tom organised the loan of the coffee machine.
- Donations for the Cake stall were overwhelming thanks to the ladies and especially Patricia Baseley.
- Donations for the Plant stall were also overwhelming, thanks everyone.
- Thank you to the people who loaned their garages and houses over the last three weeks to store items in.
Then in cleaning up on Sunday we were so lucky as what we threw away was in majority rubbish. When we turned up on Monday morning the 10 ton skip was empty.
- Chantelle from Wayside took a van full from many stalls.
- Linda who Manages the Salvation Army at Baulkham Hills then took the rest. We took three full truck loads plus three loads of Pauls four wheel drive and trailer to the store. Linda had to close the store on Monday and pulled in a number of volunteers as the store was chock a block.
- What a great outcome as it was very good for the soul.
Rotary's motto "Service above Self" has been very much demonstrated over the Garage Sale period.

Editor Observations
On Sunday, Glenda had the line up of assistants working so well in Bric a Brac I changed roles and became tiler at the door.
I had a good view of the site. Occasionally Rob McC would become DJ at the Music Stall. Saturday Night (Bee Gees) music would start to air and peacock Rob would start disco moves attracting the attention of his partner located at the Clothes Stall.
A little to the right John T would also interrupt his work and break into a few disco moves. There was no intended recipient - it appears he was just engrossed in his duties of that time.

So, what is next.....
Below is a article on the Tree of Joy.
Cawas and Nick would love you to get involved.
It can be argued that Tree of Joy is of greater benefit to the community, and requires less effort, than the Garage Sale.

Tree of Joy - Why not get involved
Fellow Rotarians and Partners
I am delighted to inform you that the Cherrybrook Centre Management has decided to go ahead with the Tree of Joy despite renovations.
The response from the community is fantastic. Last year we collected in excess of 1000 gifts at an average value of $50/- per gift this is by far one of the biggest fund raiser and community service project undertaken by the club without any significant expense.
Currently we support Anglicare, Burnside Uniting Church, Wesley Mission, Camp Quality, Marayong Primary School, Meals on Wheels, Parramatta Mission, Shine for Kids and Taldumande to name a few. This year we are looking at further expanding our charities and assisting the less fortunate people to celebrate Christmas.
The way the Tree of Joy is run a committee of club Rotarians meet and identify a charity and a nominated Rotarian becomes the sole contact with that charity. If you are passionate about a charity that you would like to support then we would love to have you on the committee, partners too are most welcome.
In case you are interested and would like more details please contact me at the earliest as we are planning to have our first meeting early this month.
If you are seriously wanting to make a difference, help those who are less fortunate and believe in service above self then be a part of the Tree that continues to spread Joy in and outside our community.

Significant Club fundraising events during the year
The Book Sale March 2017. As the result of a lot of hard work the April Book Sale was a great success, especially from the organisers Max Henderson, Andrew Little and Clive Denmark. Funds raised were circa $13,000. Well done.
2017 Trivia Night
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 26 August 20167at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising just over $5,000 towards the charities we support.

The Garage Sale
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 7&8 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result.
