A Request from Vilde
Hey Bev! I'm coming back to Australia, to study at UNSW from mid july till january! Hope we can catch up, and hope I'll be welcome to join another Rotary meeting! I also had a question. Since I'm studying at UNSW I'll try to see if I can find somewhere to stay near Bondi or Coogee. Do you know of anyone renting out, or looking for a flat mate in the area, or does someone in the club might know of something! Will be lovely to see you all again. Xx

Joint Rotary Meeting
Daisy Montano (who has attended a number of our club meetings) from the Nor West Sunrise Club is running a special function at the Pennant Hills Golf Club on Mon. 13 August 2018 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm. Could you please tentatively put this into the Club Calendar. I will speak to this on Monday to see if there is sufficient interest to have our meeting in conjunction with Norwest.
Daisy has arranged for Dr Ian Nicholson, a leading specialist in Adult and Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery to be the guest speaker. Dr Nicholson is actively involved in outreach programs through Rotary and Open Heart International performing Cardiac Surgery in developing countries of the Pacific region, South America and Africa. Dr Nicholson will share some of his amazing life experiences and why he believes in the concept of Community Service to improve quality of life, develop stronger communities and to build a better world.

Presidents Report 2nd July
President Colin welcomed 22 members & guests (instead of the normal approximately 30). I extend a warm welcome to our members and our 4 guests – Honorary member Brian Furrer, Exchange student Larissa, prospective member Laurel Colley and guest speaker Cherelyn Suzuki. It seems the winter chills and Northern Hemisphere holidays have taken their toll. Daisy Montano who is no stranger to our club and the International Director at the Norwest Sunrise Club has invited us to join with her Club for a dinner meeting at Pennant Hills gold Club on Monday Aug 13th at 6.30 pm. The objective of the meeting is to celebrate the Rotary concept of "Service Above Self." Daisy is a regular attender at this club. A number of other District 9685 clubs will also be attending. Tickets (including dinner) are $40 per person. Guest speaker on the night will be Dr Ian Nicholson, a leading specialist in Adult and Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery. |
The meeting supported my proposal to move our Monday meeting to PH Golf Club. We will need to book seats so I will send out an email asking who will be attending or NOT.
We have a number of members (7) on (or about to be on) extended leave of Absence.
Hornsby Kai ring gai PCYC – an update was received from Peter Kirkwood. Membership continues to grow and has passed the 8,000 mark – there are around 1,000 visits per day. Twelve High Schools are visiting the PCYC weekly and Waitara Public School has around 180 children drop in for sports activities. The club is discussion with Sport NSW, St. Edmund's College and Studio ARTES regarding the inclusion of disability sports activities. The Rotary Youth Hub is extremely popular both during the week and on weekends. The Rotary Youth Hub is proving very popular for hosting birthday parties. The birthday parties include use of the Youth Hub, fresh food from the PCYC cafe, and supervised activities either on the sports court or in the gymnastics area (Grandparents note!). With the school holidays coming up, hundreds of kids will use the youth hub and other areas engaging in a range of sporting and recreational holiday activities.
A new sign has been added to the Youth Hub. The sign provided the PCYC Values - Commitment * Resilience * Integrity * Citizenship * Respect*).
Club assembly will be held on July 16th. This will be an opportunity to review the club vision and agree on a 5 year club strategy. I intend to send out homework to members and collect their inputs during the assembly.
Thank you to Carol who had another article published – The Hills Shire times included an article about changeover and a photo of Anna and me handing over the cheque.
Thank you to the club members who attended the unveiling of the shade sails at Marayong Public School. Rosemary, Tom & Annette, Peter Stanton and Stan.
Michael Weathers’ plight came to the attention of the club via Rebecca Furrer. Michael, who lives in the Central Coast, plays for Westbrook AFL and has been selected to represent NSW Under 15s Schoolboys team at the Nationals. There are two trips involved - one to Canberra and one to Adelaide. Michael has to find $3,000. Michael's mum Belki passed away on 26th May She had been fighting cancer for a long while. Dad, Danny is a Firey and is having difficulties finding the funds to send Michael tp yjr Nationals. The medical and funeral expenses have been hard for him. He's asked around the coast but been unable to secure any help for Michael.
Westbrook is based at Greenway Park is one of only a few Junior AFL clubs that feed players into both the Sydney Swans Academy and GWS Giants Academy programs.
Michael’s situation is very like the family at Marayong School that we helped to get to an athletics carnival in Adelaide. The Board has agreed to make a donation of $1000. A cheque was presented to Brian to pass on to Michael.
Partners in Rotary Team has been announced as Anne Sharpe, Roma Chandra, Heather Hansen, and Bev Davison.
Until we meet again on Monday July 2nd for more fun and fellowship, have a great week.

Sergeant Rosemary opened the meeting at 7:00 a.m. and after the customary Rotary Grace and Loyal Toast called on President Colin Sharpe who welcomed attending Rotarians and Guests. Please refer to the President’s Report for details.
The following Directors’ Reports were received.

Larissa spoke of her activities over the last week, her birthday next Sunday and how she is looking forward to the forthcoming holidays.
In her ”Member’s Talk”, Kerry showed us photos of her large family headed by her Dad in his 90’s and her 84 year old Mother. She then shared with us the role she plays in helping to run Cranbrook Care retirement facilities.
Fellow Rotarian Cherelyn Suzuki then reminded us of the magnificent work being undertaken by ROMAC throughout the South Pacific where during the last 30 years over 500 children with unbelievable deformities have been treated. Heart wrenching stories where Australian doctors and other medical professionals through Australian hospital facilities have been able to change these young lives for the better.

This Week's Humour
Just Imagine
If you had bought $1000 worth of Qantas shares one year ago.
You would have made $49.00 today. If you had bought $1000 worth of AIG shares one year ago. You would have made $33.00 today. If you had bought $1000 worth of Lehman Brothers Shares one year ago. You would have made $0.00 today. BUT .... If you purchased $1000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer then returned the cans for recycling. You would have made $214.00 today. So, based on above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily and recycle!! AND DID YOU KNOW...... A recent study found that the average Australian walks 900 miles a year. Another study found the average Australian consumes 22 gallons of alcohol a year. That means on average AUSSIES get 41 miles to the gallon. MAKES YOU PROUD TO BE AN AUSSIE. DOESN’T IT?? |

Golfing with Denture
A couple of old guys were golfing when one mentioned that he was going to go to Dr Steinberg for a new set of dentures the next morning.
His elderly buddy remarked that he, too, had gone to the very same dentist two years before. "Is that so?" asked the first old guy. "Did he do a good job?" The second oldster replied, "Well, I was on the golf course yesterday when a guy on the next fairway hooked a shot. The ball must have been going at least 180 mph when it slammed me right in the testicles." The first old guy was confused and asked, "What the hell does that have to do with your dentures?" "It was the first time in two years my teeth didn't hurt." |

Yellow Light
The light turned yellow just in front of him. He did the right thing and stopped at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman behind him was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, giving the guy in front of you the finger and cursing at him. I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally I assumed you had stolen the car." Priceless. |
