West Pennant Hills: Family Fun Fair - Sunday 6th August - Update by Cawas
Some information for those interested
Fellow Rotarians,
Thank you for being generous by donating your precious "me" time on Sunday 6th August 2017 for the West Pennant Hills School Fair & BBQ. The actual Fair for the general public starts at 10:30am and ends at 3:30pm.
Colin Sharpe, Ross Ballinger and self will be there by 8:30AM to get the trailer in and to organise ourselves so that we can get all the BBQ materials ready.
The morning crew will come in at 10:00am and will finish at around 1:00pm depending on the rush.
The afternoon crew will be in at 12noon and will finish around 3:00pm.
We have purposely kept an overlap of both the volunteer teams as we expect bigger crowds during 12noon and 1:00pm.
Morning Roster: Charlie McCartney, David Turnbull, Peter Cleary along with Colin Sharpe, Ross Ballinger and Cawas
Afternoon Roster: Angelo Casamento, Bernard Chandra, Keith Ball, Nick Chuah Paul Laroumanie.
Dress Code: Rotary Yellow Tee shirt with Rotary Apron and peak cap. Understand that some new members may not have the yellow tee-shirt that is fine as long as you have the apron and peak cap.
Parking There is only street parking available and from my previous experience it will be challenging especially for those in the afternoon shift so please try and be in early.
Membership Material: Keith to give it to Cawas on Monday 31 July at the club meeting.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you all once again.

Anna Monthly Report(s)
June
Hi Everyone,
This month has been so busy. Every week I had something on. Between birthdays, rotary events, hanging out with friends, Japanese lessons and an upcoming school festival I haven’t had time to rest. Other than all that, I spent my 16th birthday with my family. My rotary club even surprised me with a cake that had my baby photo on it!!! I felt so blessed, I almost burst into tears. It is finally summer in Hokkaido and it’s a heatwave! 20°c!!!!! I didn't think it would get this hot! Everyone is in short sleeves and shorts. In class we all have our windows open, and I am the only one who is getting cold from that! Other than the lack of humidity Japan is also getting more beautiful every day. There are flowers everywhere now and it looks and smells amazing! All in all everything is going well in Japan.
Regards
Anna
July
Hi Everyone,
This Month it seems, that I have been getting busier and busier. Between Rotary meetings, meeting up with friends, changing host families, school festivals and even going to Tokyo (!) I still find time to go to school and outside clubs and lessons. Japan also seems to be getting hotter, and summer has finally arrived in Hokkaido! It has gotten up to the scorching heat of 25 degrees!!! Although, it's constantly windy so indoors is a humidity trap while outdoors will make you lose your balance due to the strong winds. Recently I have been going to School on the weekend just to catch up on the school festival and study. Now, after an extremely busy term I am FINALLY on summer holidays! I am planning to go on camp with my new host family. And this time I actually have a little sister to spend time with, it's honestly really nice! So I can easily say, I’m having a good life here in Japan, especially after 6 months of language barriers, culture shocks and extreme fatigue. I have a long way to go but for a halfway mark I am extremely happy on where I have gotten.
Regards
Anna

President's Report
President Elect’s Report July 31
President Elect Charlie welcomed fellow Rotarians partners and guests. Our guest speaker tonight was Tom Hartman who is a recent graduate police officer. Business Items tonight were: a) Joint meeting with Beecroft and at least 4 other local clubs at Pennant Hills Golf Club on Monday Sept 11th 6.30 for 7.pm. The guest speaker is John Hewko is the General Secretary of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. b) District eNews – this is published monthly and can be used to promote club events. It also contains district and Rotary International news. The August events worth reading are: · District Emergency Service Member Awards · Rotary Club of North Ryde mental health seminars with the Macquarie University Centre for Emotional Health - Overcoming procrastination in adolescence The November event is: Police Officer of the Year Awards The President Elect’s joke this week had a South African flavour The Blonde and the Bank A blonde walks into a bank in Johannesburg and asks for the loans dept. She says she’s going to Europe on business for three weeks and needs to borrow R10,000… The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so the blonde hands over the keys to a new Rolls Royce. The car is parked on the street in front of the bank, she has the papers and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank manager and its staff all enjoy a good laugh at the blonde for using a R500,000 Rolls as collateral against a R10,000 loan. An employee of the bank then proceeds to drive the Rolls into the bank’s underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the blonde returns, repays the R10,000 and the interest, which comes to R141.66. The bank manager says, “Miss, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow R10,000?” The blond replies … “Where else in Johannesburg can I park my car for two weeks for only R141.66 and expect it to be there when I return?” Thank you all for coming – It is pleasing to see 34 attending. Have a great week making a difference until we meet again next Monday for more run and fellowship and our Speaker is Roger Norman on the topic of Graffiti Removal. President Colin will be back next week. ‘Smile at a stranger. You don’t know what their struggles might be. Your smile could be a shining light in their darkness’. - Charlie |
Night Report
The meeting started with Rotary Grace and Colin McGowan proposing the toast to Australia, New Zealand and France.
President- elect Charlotte McCartney welcomed members present tonight, as well as partners, Jill Turnbull, Pamela Makin and Julie Cleary. She welcomed speakers Anna Papoutsakis and Tom Hartman.
President’s Report:
Refer to report in the bulletin.
Director’s Reports:
Vocational – Barry advised that the new round of member’s talks commence tonight. He has 11 members scheduled to speak at upcoming meetings, and asked any member who hasn’t nominated to undertake a talk to fill in the proforma he distributed and get this back to him.
Community Service – Cawas updated members on the BBQ being conducted at the West Pennant Public School fete on Sunday 6 August 2017. There is an am and pm shift with an hour overlap between both. He reminded participants to bring with them their cap and apron and to wear their yellow club polo shirt.
Club Service - Max promoted the Trivia Night being conducted by the WPH Lions Club. It is being held Saturday 12 August at West Pennant Hills Sports Club. Max encouraged members to participate and ideally get at least 1 table to attend, given Lions have supported our Trivia Night in past years.
Fundraising – Andrew Little provided an update on the Club’s Trivia Night which is scheduled on Saturday 26 August. Good progress is being made on the event and flyers will be distributed to local residents shortly.
Membership – Keith advised that there was a response rate of just over 50% on the recent membership survey.
Member’s Talk:
Leading off this round of talks was Cawas who spoke tonight about his hobby, yoga. He has been doing yoga since 2005 and practices at home, as well as attending classes at C2K twice a week. Initially he started yoga to address knee pain he was experiencing. Yoga seemed to alleviate this ailment and since then he has continued on with this practice due to the overall health benefits it promotes.
Guest Speakers:
Anna Papoutsakis, who was a recent guest speaker, returned to the meeting tonight to thank the Club and members for supporting her charity work. She gave a comprehensive update on the three cows (Cherry, Brooke and Penny) and the families who received them, as a result of our donation and of the difference they had made to the lives of these families. Anna presented the Club with a thank you certificate, as well as giving one to John Tchetchenian who also purchased a cow as a result of Anna’s inspirational work. Charlie thanked Anna on behalf of the Club and John, and welcomed her back at any time to maintain her relationship with us.
Tom Westcott then introduced our speaker for the night, Tom Hartmann. Being no stranger to the Club, having waited on Club members for many years in his previous role as staff member at Springfield, Tom then launched into his talk about his new role as a serving member of the NSW Police Force. Tom graduated from the Academy at Goulburn in April 2017 and since that time has been stationed at Castle Hill as part of the Hills Local Area Command. Tom talked about his training at the Academy and showed some fantastic photos of his graduation ceremony and parade. While he is doing general duties at present, long term he would like to move into Police Rescue and hopes that his previous experience with the SES will mean he is well placed to move into this area of policing.
Ricardo then continued the proceedings with his amusing round of fines. The night’s raffle winner was Nick, while Heads and Tails was won by Ross.
In her closing remarks, Charlie thanked members, partners and guests for attending and thanked everyone for supporting her tonight in her first ever time in the big chair.
(PS: nicely done Charlie – we all agree you shone brightly tonight!)

JESUS AND THE LABOR SUPPORTER
I hope you get a smile out of this one. (I don't care what party you like, this one's funny!!
A 'liberal', in a wheelchair, entered a restaurant one afternoon and asked the waitress for a cup of coffee. The 'Liberal looked across the restaurant and asked, "Is that Jesus sitting over there?"
The waitress nodded "yes," so the 'Liberal' requested that she give Jesus a cup of hot chocolate, on him.
The next patron to come in was a 'Bob Katter' supporter, with a hunched back. He shuffled over to a booth, painfully sat down, and asked the waitress for a cup of hot tea. He also glanced across the restaurant and asked, "Is that Jesus, over there?"
The waitress nodded, so the 'Bob Katter' supporter asked her to give Jesus a cup of hot tea,
"my treat."
The third patron to come into the restaurant was a 'Labor' supporter on crutches. He hobbled over to a booth, sat down and hollered, "Hey there honey! How's about getting me a cold XXXX beer?" He too looked across the restaurant and asked, "Isn't that God's boy over there?"
The waitress nodded, so the 'Labor' supporter directed her to give Jesus a cold beer. "On my bill," he said loudly.
As Jesus got up to leave, he passed by the 'Liberal, touched him and said, "For your kindness, you are healed." The 'Liberal' felt the strength come back into his legs, got up, and danced a jig out the door.
Jesus passed by the 'Bob Katter' supporter, touched him and said, "For your kindness, you are healed." The 'Katter' supporter felt his back straightening up and he raised his hands, praised the Lord, and did a series of back flips out the door.
Then, Jesus walked towards the 'Labor' supporter, just smiling. The 'Labor' supporter jumped up and yelled, "Don't touch me .... I'm on a disability pension."
