Beauty and The Beast - SYMT
|
SYMT - Beauty and the Beast
Sydney Youth Musical Theatre is putting on Beauty and the Beast at Hornsby RSL in Mid Nov. This show will be put on by the under 21 age group performers. Thirty club members attended SYMT's previous show, Legally Blonde, in July. A club group booking is going to be made for Friday 18th November, at 7.30pm. Please let Colin Sharpe know by 30 October if you are interested in going.
Proudly presented by the Sydney Youth Musical Theatre
Based on the Academy-Award winning animated feature, the stage version of Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST includes all the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.
When Maurice becomes lost in the woods on the way to the fair, he seeks shelter in an old castle, but the master of the castle is a horrible beast that takes him captive. Maurice's daughter, Belle, must then give up her freedom to save his life. Belle's taming of the unfortunate Beast and his ultimate transformation into a handsome prince enthralled Broadway audiences for over 13 years.
SYMT is now in its 39th year of staging productions in the Sydney region, and it remains the largest exclusively youth musical society in Australia. Each year, we stage two productions: one in July for our 14-25 year old members , and one in November for our 10-18 year old members.
Sunday Morning Gardening
Last Sunday morning a group of club members went around to Barry's house to give him a hand to get his yard and garden back into shape. With this energetic, keen workforce and many tools and gadgets a considerable amount of gardening was achieved in a very short period of time!

Just a reminder, if you are thinking of coming with us one time, you may need to consider bringing car sickness tablets as the road is REALLY WINDY for 3 of the 4 hour trip.
Bit of a winding road but in excellent condition

At the school we were greeted by lots of very ' happy chappies' who had been waiting for over two hours for us to arrive. So you can imagine the excitement in the air.

Epping Rotary 2016 Trivia Night- Saturday 12 November
We are aiming to raise $20,000 towards the extremely important counselling work undertaken by CCA in Epping through the Shack for young people with a range of mental health issues. This services young people in the broader area.
This type of intervention is very expensive and requires considerable resourcing.
I am asking that you form a table of 6-10 people as a team representing your Rotary Club.
It would be great to have your support.
Please contact Ian Bittner for bookings- details on the flyer- or me on 0410685417
Many thanks for your support

Rotary Foundation 100 Years Celebration
100 Years of Doing Good in the World
Rotary President Arch Klumph’s idea for an endowment fund dedicated to “doing good in the world” planted the seed of The Rotary Foundation in 1917.
Thanks to his vision and staunch advocacy, and the extraordinary generosity of Rotary members worldwide, that fund has become one of the world’s leading humanitarian foundations.
Klumph's remarks at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, planted the seed for today's Foundation.
In 1917 the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, USA, made the first donation of $26.50

In 2016-17, our Rotary Foundation turns 100. That’s a century of Rotary members changing lives and improving communities all over the world. And that’s definitely something worth celebrating.
Through our Foundation, Rotary members have supported thousands of projects to provide clean water, fight disease, promote peace, provide basic education, and grow local economies. We’ve also been a leader in the fight to eradicate polio worldwide.
The centennial is the perfect time to share this impressive record with the world. Join us in making sure that every Rotary member and people in every community know about the vital work of Rotary and its Foundation.

President's Report 31st October 2016
Thank you to the Social Committee for organising such a fun night on Monday – retro clothes, sweeps and Melbourne Cup trivia quiz. I hope you were successful in the sweeps. I missed out totally – even with the school sweeps as well but I guess that is what the Melbourne Cup is all about.
We have the Tree of Joy coming up soon. It’s wonderful to see the Cherrybrook community being so generous to help those less fortunate than us. For those newer members, it is very uplifting to be part of the present distribution night in December. Don’t miss it!
At the Zone President’s meeting the conference on March 11th was discussed. It’s a day event at Penrith Panthers so put that date in your diary. Also the Million Dollar Dinner was mentioned. It is on November 28th at The Epping Club. Please refer to the ad above. It would be good to have someone to represent the club. We could subsidise someone to attend.
Please consider a position on the board for 2017/18. It is a great experience where you can learn about yourself, Rotary and serving Humanity at the same time. Forms will be available at all the upcoming meetings.
On a sadder note, we farewell Rob Hamer this week. He was a wonderful and valued member of our club being involved with the first Trivia Night amongst many other things. His fight with prostate cancer was a long one and our love and thoughts go to Janet at this difficult time.

Night Report 31st October 2016
The meeting started with a one minute silence to remember past member Rob Hamer who passed away on 27 October. His funeral will be on Thursday 2 November at Northern Suburbs Crematorium.
Stan Baseley led the Rotary Grace and Jim Simpson proposed the toast to Australia, Rotary and mug punters!
At this point Sergeant at Arms, Barry Freeman thanked members and partners who participated the previous day in the ‘Great Garden Clean-up’ at his house. He was overwhelmed by the show of support and extremely pleased with the result.
President Rosemary Clarke welcomed members and partners present for this special Melbourne Cup meeting and she thanked the Social Committee for organising the night. She welcomed back Teresa, Janelle and Jim all of whom have now returned from holidays. Rosemary thanked John Tchetchenian for his efforts in organising an interesting and entertaining vocational meeting last week to the Australian Brewery. Rosemary also reported back on the Zone Presidents meeting, the conference and Tony Coote’s major project committee.
Director’s Reports:
Keith Ball reported that the Membership Committee would be meeting on 1 November at Neville Hansen’s house.
John Tchetchenian reported that the next Vocational Meeting would be a visit to Tom business, Alfresco Shades, at 74 Wellington Street Riverstone. John advised that attendance sheets were on the table for members to complete if attending, noting that partners are welcome to attend as well. Arrangements for the night are to meet at 6.30 for a 7pm start, at which time the party will be broken into two groups to allow for a tour of the facilities. This will be followed by a spit roast dinner. Cost of the event is $30pp.
Teresa Janowski reported on the upcoming Foundation Lunch. This will be held on Sunday 20 November 2016 at Teresa and Mark’s house in Cherrybrook (NB: this in lieu of the regular Club meeting on 21 November; so no meeting that week). This is a partner’s activity, the cost is $30pp. Of this cost, $26.50 per couple will be donated to the Rotary Foundation, Teresa noted that this amount was the initial amount of money donated to establish the Foundation one hundred years ago. It requires four members to volunteer to assist with a BBQ. It is scheduled for 11am and should only involve three –four hours. Margaret McGowan provided a Partners Committee report. She advised that the next Partners night was due to be held on 28 November, but because this coincides with the next Youth meeting (and hence partners will be in attendance), the next dedicated partners night will be held at a date to be confirmed in February 2017.
Colin Sharpe reported on behalf of the Social Committee. After having organised a great night out last Friday night seeing, ‘Back to the 80’s’, put on by the Berowra Waters Musical Society, the committee is organising a booking for Beauty and the Beast. This is scheduled for Friday 18 November at Hornsby RSL, so if members are interested in attending, please get back to Colin by the end of this week.
Exchange Student News:
Sarah reported on her week to date. She attended the Back to the 80’s night with club members last Friday night and thanked Max Henderson for the invite as she had a great night out. On Saturday night she dressed up as a vampire and attended a Halloween Party with other exchange students, and then on Sunday she headed off to lunch at Doyles at Watsons Bay with Rosemary and her family.
Member Talk:
Daniel Tan was tonight’s member in the spotlight. He told of being born in Malaysia in 1973, the son of an airline executive and a nurse. He has two siblings; a sister who is an accountant and a brother who works in the family real estate business. His family moved to New Zealand when he was ten. He did his schooling there and after his bursary exams (our HSC) chose to study architecture.
He come to Australia in 1991 where he studied architecture at UTS. His first job was with KMP working at Luna Park, after which other civic and public works projects have followed.
He married the beautiful Angela in 1998 and has gone on to have 8 children in total – 6 girls and 2 boys. At one stage he had 5 daughters under the age of 6 – the result of having children who were just too good at sleeping he says!!
Daniel is now the General Manager at the family real estate business, Century 21 Joseph Tan Real Estate at West Pennant Hills. Daniel believes the family business strives for service and ethics as its priority, and it was through ad-hoc sponsorship that Daniel formed his connections with Rotary.
Daniel is the first member to date to conclude his talk by not only volunteering fun facts about himself, such as being a representative handgun shooter and being able to write in mirror reverse, but also demonstrating his is double jointed by way of dislocating his finger joints – ouch!!
After coffee we then participated in a Melbourne Cup trivia game. Many of “the mug punters” guessed their way through the answers whilst a couple obviously knew the answers. It came down to Lynne Henderson and Dianne Simpson with Lynne being the eventual winner.
The winners of the retro dress up were Margaret McGowan and John Tchetchenian who both booked superb with the Turnbulls and Clarkes winning the best dressed couple.
After a particularly riotous fines session Jim won the Heads and Tails and someone won the raffle!!
A great night of fun and fellowship.
