A number of us went to the Ronald McDonald House at Westmead Hospital on Friday night. We arrived about 3:15pm and had a tour of the premises, they now have some 61 units in the new complex and still have a waiting list. There is a mix of two bedroom and single bedroom. We then prepared and served dinner to some 130 people which was a lot of fun and very satisfying. We then had to wash up and clean up but we all got away about 8:30pm. A great night was had by all. If anyone wants to know how to work an industrial dish washer, Andrew and I are the go to men.

Trivia Night Flyer Released

The drought zone is segregated for donation purposes and we will support the Hunter Valley farmers. Money donated will go to buy hay, water, transport diesel, and food hampers.
BREAKING NEWS - Drought Relief Fund for Australian Farmers - RAWCS Project
Message from DG Susan Wakefield
I’m delighted to advise that a partnership has been formed between Rotary Australia, Channel 9 and the National Farmers’ Federation to help our drought-stricken farmers. A fundraising appeal will be launched on Channel 9’s Today show TOMORROW MORNING - Thursday 2 August.
In Australia, farmers are the lifeblood of our country and they are in crisis. Record breaking heat and lack of rain means farmers are struggling to feed sheep and cattle, and keep crops alive. Families on the land are suffering and they need our help. Channel 9 and Rotary Australia have partnered with the National Farmers’ Federation, launching an appeal to big business and everyday Australians, so we can provide some emergency relief. 100% of donations go to the farmers and are tax deductible via Rotary and RAWCS. Every dollar counts.
The link for the donation page for the project is: https://donations.rawcs.com.au/17-2018-19
More details about District 9685's Drought relief support program will appear in tomorrow's DG's eNews.

Significant Club Fundraising Events during the year
The Garage Sale
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 7&8 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |

Presidents Report 30th July
Considering the number of members travelling or on leave of absence it was pleasing to welcome 21 members and 4 guests. Our guest speaker was Jason Miezis, the Principal at Cherrybrook Public School. Our other guests were Honorary member Brian Furrer, Jill Marquette, and Larissa.
Thank you Keith, for looking after last weeks meeting. The feed-back was very positive. Thank you Ricardo for standing in as our Sergeant-at-arms for last week and this week. It was noted that Ricardo has not lost any of his ability to extract fines. The combined meeting with Norwest Sunrise and other local Clubs on August 13th is in aid of Medicos in Bolivia. It will now be held at Springfield. We have 24 attending including 5 partners and Larissa. If you have not paid $40 per person please pay next Monday or direct deposit to the Club general account. The Hills Rotaract Club is in the process of being revived. I attended a meeting of potential members and supporting Rotarians on July 18th. Kirsty Webb (ex Rotaract) from the Norwest Sunrise Club is leading the revival. Our club will partner with The Hills Rotaract Club and provide them support along with the other surrounding Rotary clubs. |
Thanks to Carol we have put a Trivia Night advertorial into the Dooral Roundup. Andrew has put an advert onto our Facebook page. I hope we can raise at least $5000. District have now established Drought Relief as an official project. It is being coordinated by Barry Edmundson from Wahroonga Club and more details about how the District program will operate will become available during the next few weeks. Thank you Jaswant for booking into the Rotary Leadership Institute August course. It is not too late if anyone wants to join Jaswant. The club will pay the $75 cost. The course is on August 4th and 24th. The two part course is held at our District Office, Thornleigh. Morning tea and lunch are provided. Each day starts at 8.00am for 8.15am and finishes around 4.00pm.
Important 2018-19 District dates; Please put these into your diaries.
16 March 2019 - President-Elect Training Seminar (PETS)
- COMPULSORY Training for 2019/20 Presidents
29-31 March 2019- District Conference
14 April 2019 - District Assembly
- Training for all 2019/20 Club Board members and executives
29 June 2019 - District Changeover
The club received the following message of appreciation from an ex RYPEN student (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment). RYPEN is a weekend residential experience for youth aged 14-16 years designed to develop skills that will assist them in the transition to adulthood:
"My name is Ashley Eaton and I am a student from Cherrybrook Technology High School.
Last year you sponsored me so that I could attend the RYPEN (Rotary Youth Enrichment) Summer Camp. At this camp I learnt many invaluable skills and tools that will support me well in my future and that gave me a lot of confidence in communicating, developing team work and leadership skills.
I wanted to advise that based on the skills that I received from this camp, I was successful in becoming part of the School Leadership Team for 2018/2019. I feel that my attendance at this Camp strongly supported my application and I wanted to thank you for giving me this incredible opportunity. I hope that I will be a strong and committed
Leader that will make my parents, the school and you all proud.
Thank you once again, Ashley (Ash)"
The District Website has just posted an article on Wheelchairs for kids and which we donated to last year. This is a Rotary project run out of Perth that provides purpose built wheelchairs for children in less developed countries. $200 provides one wheelchair (40,000 chairs to date). Rotary clubs are encouraged to partner with local schools to raise money via a Wheelathon. Recently the Clubs from the northern end of our district partnered with Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College to raise $5000. Mosman Rotary is coordinating Wheelathons in our District and have 15 chairs available.
Some potential opportunities for partnering with Cherrybrook Public School were explored during dinner. One involving scholarships for extra circular excellence has merit and could be implemented immediately.
Next Week Chief Inspector (Retired) Gary Raymond will speak on “Danger was my Business”.
Over the next few weeks our numbers will be down – 11 on leave in warmers parts of the world. 4 on extended leave of absence.
Until we meet again on Monday August 6th for more fun and fellowship, have a great week.
President Colin

Director’s Reports
- Keith (Club Service), with the change in venues for our combined meeting Monday week (Pennant Golf Club to Springfields) Keith will amend the roster accordingly.
- Paul (Treasurer) advised his family will be the first host family for the new exchange student hosted by Kellyville and Norwest Sunrise Clubs. She is from Belgium and arrives next week.

- Andrew (Trivia Night) also gave the Trivia Night a plug which is Saturday 25th August (usual venue etc) is rapidly approaching (only 26 sleeps) and time to organise your family and friends into tables of eight (ten at a pinch), alternatively if you don’t have sufficient numbers book a table indicate your numbers and we can create tables of eight. Important to indicate if you are on someone else’s table (so as we don’t inadvertently double book you).

We will also be seeking volunteers to assist on the night, eg raffle sales, kitchen, hall set, etc. As all proceeds will go to “Drought Relief NSW” we are hoping for a very successful night.

This Week's Humour
What, no plastic bags.....
Bev Davison
The Blind Cowboy.....
He wanders over to a bar stool and asks the bartender for a shot of Jack Daniels.
He sits there for a while, then calls out to the bartender. “Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?” At that point the entire bar falls deadly silent. In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says, “Before you tell that joke, cowboy, I think it is only fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five things:
The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head and mutters, “No, not if I’m gonna have to explain it five times.” |

Lemon Picker
Looking for a good job on the Murray River ??
Sally Mulligan of Paddington NSW decided to take one of the jobs that most Australians are not willing to do. Sally applied for a job in a lemon grove and seemed to be far too qualified for the job. She has a liberal arts degree from the University of Adelaide and had worked as a social worker and a school teacher. The foreman frowned and said, "I have to ask you, have you had any actual experience in picking lemons ??" "Well, as a matter of fact, I have," she said. "I've been divorced three times, owned two Jeeps, voted twice for Labor, and once for Clive Palmer.” ........ She starts in the morning. Tony C
