Cherrybrook Uniting Church Cemetery Project - Delayed, Deferred

Hi All, this is to let you know this project has been put off.

As the graves are heritage listed we asked advise from Synod and they got advise from the lawyers who have insisted we must get approval from all owners of graves and if we do not know this then we need to for a period of 28 days, publicly communicate via publishing a notice in the Gazette and in a newspaper that circulates NSW plus some more requirements.   Gets a bit too hard.

Thank you everyone who volunteered to help.

February is Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month

Picture
Conflict and violence displace millions of people each year. Half of those killed in conflict are children, and 90 percent are civilians.

We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.

Through our service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, our members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.

Significant Club fundraising events during the year

Picture
The Book Sale March 2017.  As the result of a lot of hard work the April Book Sale was a great success, especially from  the organisers Max Henderson, Andrew Little and Clive Denmark.  Funds raised were circa $13,000.  Well done.

Picture
2017 Trivia Night
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 26 August 20167at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising just over $5,000 towards the charities we support.

Picture
The Garage Sale
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 7&8 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.

Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result.

Barbecues
The club runs fund raising barbecues throughout the year, mainly at Bunnings  (both Dural and Thornleigh)  Here are Barry, Tony, Nick and David hard at work. at Thornleigh..

President's Report 29th Jan

President Colin welcomed twenty three members and five guests (Larissa, Brian Furrer, Jaswant Thakorlal, Kerry and Bill Mann).

Business.
  1. President Colin visited Hornsby Ku-ring-gai PCYC last Wed.  It is well worth a club member vocational visit.  It is planned to hold a vocational dinner meeting there, probably in April with speakers from the PCYC.  I spoke last week about the creation of a Rotary Youth Hub within PCYC.  The Club Board has agreed to donate $2000 to support this project.  Our contribution will be recognised within the Hub. There will be a large sign in the Youth Hub with the Rotary logo and in addition a plaque with the names of the contributing Rotary Clubs.  On the completion of the work there will be an official unveiling.
  2. Rotary International President-elect Barry Rassin of the Rotary Club of East Nassau, in the Bahamas, has unveiled the 2018-19 presidential theme – “Be the Inspiration”.  At the incoming district governors at Rotary’s International Assembly last week Rassin laid out his vision for the future of the organization, calling on leaders to work for a sustainable future and to inspire Rotarians and the community at large.
  3. It is worthwhile recalling Rotary’s new vision statement - “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.”
  4. News from District 9685 web site - Bill Gates now believes that we can eliminate malaria in the Asia Pacific area by 2025 and Julie Bishop has agreed to join the End Malaria Council, co-chaired by Bill Gates to increase our Government’s commitment to the task.  Gates says there is an urgent need to step up the fight against malaria in Asia, which accounts for about 7 per cent of the world’s cases, because parasite-carrying mosquitoes were developing a resistance to a key drug, artemisinin.
  • Malaria  exists through much of Asia and the Pacific including Indonesia, The Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea and islands such as Vanuatu and the Solomons.
  • Until recently, the fight against malaria globally was one of the great health success stories. With a combination of treatment and preventions technologies, global malaria deaths fell by 58 per cent between 2000 and 2015 and half of the world’s nations are malaria-free. But in recent years, the World Health Organisation says, investment in fighting the disease has stalled, allowing malaria to return in force.
  • Gates, took his call for global action on malaria to the World Economic Forum in Davos last week.  He said he wanted to see Australia lift its foreign aid closer to UN targets.  Australia’s foreign aid budget has fallen to about $3.8 billion from $5.1bn in 2012-13 and its percentage of gross national income is now only 0.22 per cent, well short of the UN’s target of 0.7 per cent.
  • Australia invested $300 million in the Indo-Pacific Health Security Initiative, which focuses on drug resistance. Australia is also a significant investor in the Global Fund’s regional efforts to combat malaria, contributing $220 million for 2017-19.
  • Rotarians Against Malaria is an activity of Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) – Peter Stanton investigated participating in RAM, but for good reasons the International Committee decided against participation at this time.
  1. President Colin reminded members that we still need another Director for next year and a President Elect.

Next week we have the Honourable Philip Ruddock Mayor of Hornsby Council speaking to us.

Thank you to those members participating in the Bunnings BBQ on Sunday at Thornleigh.

Those going on the Central Coast Weekend enjoy yourselves and come back with lots of stories to share.

Until we meet again next Monday for more run and fellowship have a great week making a difference.

Night Report

Member Updates
Ros confirmed details of the upcoming weekend away on the 3/4th February.  Travellers are to meet at 8.15am for a prompt 8.30am departure.
Janelle confirmed the upcoming Bunnings BBQ this weekend at Thornleigh. All shifts are filled.
Peter updated the Club on the Water Filtration project in the Philippines.  Whilst we are not the lead club on this project, it looks very promising and something that would be well supported by the two schools & the students’ parents.  There was general discussion about the various technical attributes of the project and Peter confirmed that our financial contribution would probably be around $10K. Further updates in the coming weeks.
Tony C advised that the St Gabriel’s School project had slowed down recently but was hopeful that most of the work would be completed prior to the students return for Term 1.
Rosemary updated on the RYLA and RYPEN students and shared a card from one of our previous exchange students who is hoping to visit us later in the year. Rosemary also reminded the Club that Youth night is February 19th.
John urged all members who had not yet had the chance to spend some time with our new incoming exchange student Larissa, to reach out and organise something.  Larissa will be starting school at Cherrybrook Tech this week.

Member Talk – Colin S
Colin explained his hobby of pen making, demonstrating the technique using a video and showing us some of the actual tools he uses.  His enthusiasm for his prized lathe was infectious!  The quality and craftsmanship of the pens that Colin produces could be easily seen from the samples which he passed around – it’s amazing how a lump of wood can become such a finely crafted writing instrument.
The raffle was won by a Club guest but Heads & Tails didn’t produce a winner this week.
President Colin closed the meeting by reminding all Members that we have The Honourable Philip Ruddock as our guest speaker next week and therefore it would be terrific if we have all members in attendance.

The Difficult Exam
One day a student was taking a very difficult essay exam. At the end of the test, the prof asked all the students to put their pencils down and immediately hand in their tests.
The young man kept writing furiously, although he was warned that if he did not stop immediately he would be disqualified. He ignored the warning, finished the test 10 minutes later, and went to hand the test to his instructor. The instructor told him he would not take the test.
The student asked, “Do you know who I am?”
The prof said, “No and I don’t care.”
The student asked again, “Are you sure you don’t know who I am?”
The prof again said no. So the student walked over to the pile of tests, placed his in the middle, then threw the papers in the air.
“Good” the student said, and walked out. He passed.
