Cherrybrook Uniting Church Cemetery Project - Delayed, Deferred
Hi All, this is to let you know this project has been put off.
As the graves are heritage listed we asked advise from Synod and they got advise from the lawyers who have insisted we must get approval from all owners of graves and if we do not know this then we need to for a period of 28 days, publicly communicate via publishing a notice in the Gazette and in a newspaper that circulates NSW plus some more requirements. Gets a bit too hard.
Thank you everyone who volunteered to help.

February is Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month
Conflict and violence displace millions of people each year. Half of those killed in conflict are children, and 90 percent are civilians.
We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.
Through our service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, our members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.

Significant Club fundraising events during the year

The Book Sale March 2017. As the result of a lot of hard work the April Book Sale was a great success, especially from the organisers Max Henderson, Andrew Little and Clive Denmark. Funds raised were circa $13,000. Well done.

2017 Trivia Night
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 26 August 20167at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising just over $5,000 towards the charities we support.

The Garage Sale
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 7&8 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result.

Night Report
Member Updates
Ros confirmed details of the upcoming weekend away on the 3/4th February. Travellers are to meet at 8.15am for a prompt 8.30am departure.
Janelle confirmed the upcoming Bunnings BBQ this weekend at Thornleigh. All shifts are filled.
Peter updated the Club on the Water Filtration project in the Philippines. Whilst we are not the lead club on this project, it looks very promising and something that would be well supported by the two schools & the students’ parents. There was general discussion about the various technical attributes of the project and Peter confirmed that our financial contribution would probably be around $10K. Further updates in the coming weeks.
Tony C advised that the St Gabriel’s School project had slowed down recently but was hopeful that most of the work would be completed prior to the students return for Term 1.
Rosemary updated on the RYLA and RYPEN students and shared a card from one of our previous exchange students who is hoping to visit us later in the year. Rosemary also reminded the Club that Youth night is February 19th.
John urged all members who had not yet had the chance to spend some time with our new incoming exchange student Larissa, to reach out and organise something. Larissa will be starting school at Cherrybrook Tech this week.
Member Talk – Colin S
Colin explained his hobby of pen making, demonstrating the technique using a video and showing us some of the actual tools he uses. His enthusiasm for his prized lathe was infectious! The quality and craftsmanship of the pens that Colin produces could be easily seen from the samples which he passed around – it’s amazing how a lump of wood can become such a finely crafted writing instrument.
The raffle was won by a Club guest but Heads & Tails didn’t produce a winner this week.
President Colin closed the meeting by reminding all Members that we have The Honourable Philip Ruddock as our guest speaker next week and therefore it would be terrific if we have all members in attendance.

The Difficult Exam
One day a student was taking a very difficult essay exam. At the end of the test, the prof asked all the students to put their pencils down and immediately hand in their tests.
The young man kept writing furiously, although he was warned that if he did not stop immediately he would be disqualified. He ignored the warning, finished the test 10 minutes later, and went to hand the test to his instructor. The instructor told him he would not take the test.
The student asked, “Do you know who I am?”
The prof said, “No and I don’t care.”
The student asked again, “Are you sure you don’t know who I am?”
The prof again said no. So the student walked over to the pile of tests, placed his in the middle, then threw the papers in the air.
“Good” the student said, and walked out. He passed.
