Hi Members and Others,
The club has agreed to assist DIK on 27th May 2017. DIK (Donations in Kind) collects things (mainly medical equipment) and sends them to third world countries where they can be used for the benefit of less fortunate people than us. DIK has to vacate the Minchinbury warehouse later this year and needs to remove everything from this warehouse. Much of what is there now needs to be tipped. Miriam Jacka (wife of PDG and PP of our club Larry) runs this organisation and needs your help. This will be a lot of fun – we simply have to remove the stuff into a huge bin. There is a fork lift for heavy pieces. There is also plenty of light stuff for partners and those with weak backs. We shall start at 8.30am on 27th May and will be finished by lunch time. There will be lots of morning tea as always. It takes about 20 minutes from Cherrybrook and we can organise some car sharing. Please reply by email so I can put you on the list. We don’t have a lot of meetings before that date. PS DIK is not closing – the good stuff is on its way to new warehouse in Castle Hill. Look forward to hearing from you. Please call me if you want to know more about this fun event. |
This will be my last email for DIK. It is on this next Saturday.
Location is at Minchinbury on the old Great Western Highway – immediately behind MacDonalds. We have the following volunteers:
If anyone wants to car-share please call me. Looking at the addresses we seem to be well spread out so there are no obvious matches. |

Erika JansakerErika Jansaker was our club’s exchange student in 2007-2008. She was the first exchange student that Bev and I hosted, and she was a delight.

"I've found 7 so far - what has everyone else been drinking or smoking?!?"
Do you know who wrote this?
I can tell you that they are both right and wrong. (Actually wrong and right.)
I had just counted eight.
Anne found six.
However, some authoritive soul is telling the me/us there are fifteen.
Need to know more, then go to the Club Facebook site and click "Like"
You can then be kept up to date.
Carol has a lot to answer for, and she is none of the above.

RYLA 2017 - this is an excerpt from the latest DG's E News & shows why we support RYLA
RYLA 2017 was run and won by 84 new RYLArians. The Organising Committee chaired by David Clark, supported the Facilitators lead by Amanda Firkins together with Mum & Dad (David and Dianne Waterhouse) arranged an excellent program that actively engaged and developed the attendees. The outdoor activities were challenging and the indoor speakers were compelling.
Well Done and Thank you to all who made it happen....and I hope that the experience convinces the new RYLArians to join Rotaract so they can continue to enjoy and enhance the Rotary experience.

Significant Club fundraising events during the year
The Book Sale March 2017. As the result of a lot of hard work the April Book Sale was a great success, especially from the organisers Max Henderson, Andrew Little and Clive Denmark. Funds raised were circa $13,000. Well done.
2016 Trivia Night
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 27 August 2016 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising just over $5,000 towards the charities we support.

The Garage Sale
We have just had a very successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 8/9 October raising a record gross of over $30k. The combination of good planning and benign weather contributed to this result.

President's Report 22nd May 2017
It was lovely to have so many guests at our last meeting. Several prospective members (welcome Linda, Joseph and Gordon), visiting Rotarians from Egypt – Raouf and Manual, Gwen Baxter and our guest speaker Rex Langthorne. Welcome back Sarah. You obviously loved the safari.
We were informed of the Special Olympics and the role it plays in making sure that intellectually disabled people can be included in sport and life in general. I’m lucky to be involved with some children from Marayong who are striving to do their best. Remember Robbie who we helped to send to Perth to represent NSW in disabled athletics? Maybe he will end up in the Special Olympics! Don’t forget DIK and the Red Shield Appeal this weekend followed by our Pride of Workmanship meeting on Monday. John has worked extremely hard with his committee of one so let’s support him by attending. For those who were not at the meeting, this is an invitation to attend our Changeover on Saturday June 17 at Pennant Hills Golf Club. There will be a 3 course meal with wine for approx. $65 pp. Dress is black tie and I know many people look forward to a “dress up” evening. We hope to see you there. Please fill in the sheets at the next meeting or email me of your intention to attend. The Rotary year is winding up but there is still time to have fun and fellowship whilst serving Humanity. Night Report 22nd May 2017
The evening commenced with Rotary Grace and The Loyal Toast after which Sargent Barry invited President Rosemary to make the opening remarks;
She then called for various Directors’ reports. These included
- Keith to be stand in Bulletin Editor for the next month
- need to advise Ros of attendance at the proposed Vivid trip
- details of how to register to attend SPAMALOT refer to weekly Bulletin
- arrangements completed for forthcoming DIK activities ,although still room for additional helpers
- need more members to be involved in Red Shield Appeal
Sarah then gave a short commentary on her Safari experience with the promise of a more comprehensive report at a later date.
Raouf then spoke briefly about his Rotary club situated on the outskirts of Cairo and their last major project installing a modern intensive care facility in a rather poorly equipped local hospital.
Andrew then gave his Job Talk about his 6 years spent in Mongolia where he played a lead role in the building of a coke and coal mine. He supported his talk with some fascinating photos of the life and times of the Mongolian people. In particular the 10 months of every year when the average temperature is around -20 degrees C and can go to 40 degrees below!!
It was agreed that he should continue telling us more about his Mongolian experiences at a later date.
Following coffee our guest speaker Rex Langthorne spoke about The Special Olympics.
He described how and why the organisation was created; the role it plays in helping those with intellectual difficulties; unlike The OLYMPICS which focus upon recognising the best at each event, The Special Olympics focuses upon celebrating each participant for being the best they can be. He spoke of the work undertaken by Eunice Shriver in enhancing global recognition and the support from past Olympic champions such as our own Jon Konrads .He concluded with an outline of the movement’s growth and plans for it’s future in Australia.
After the customary raffle and heads and tails President Rosemary concluded the evening reminding members of the forthcoming events outlined on our calendar and thanking our visitors for their attendance.
The meeting closed after the singing of The National Anthem.

TEXT APOLOGY FROM NEIGHBOR TO BOB
" I am so sorry Bob. I've been riddled with guilt and I have to
confess. I have been helping myself to your wife, day and night when
you're not around. In fact, I have probably been getting more than
you. I do not get it at home - but that's no excuse. I can no longer
live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apology
with my promise that it won't ever happen again."
On reading the text, Bob, anguished and betrayed, went directly into
his bedroom, grabbed his gun and, without a word, shot his wife dead.
A few moments later, a second text came in, "Bloody spell check!!
Sorry Bob, the second sentence should refer to your Wi-Fi."
