St Gabriel's Project
Rotary helps children with disabilities
The West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook Rotary Club has just completed its second project at St Gabriel’s in Castle Hill. St Gabriel's is an independent, co-educational, Catholic school catering for students with disabilities such as sensory impairment, intellectual disability in the mild to moderate range, and autism.
Our first project was to provide a shaded sensory playground and storage shed. This time we have built a vegetable garden for the children to experience hands-on gardening. The garden has raised beds, a water tank and garden shed.
Club members spent an enjoyable, rewarding and hard-working three days constructing the garden.

What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.

The Garage Sale 2018

Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |

President's Report 22nd July
Wow! What a talk from Martha Jabour. Martha gave a powerful talk that covered, inter alia, cot death, trauma support, Graces Place and Homicide Victim’s Support Group. On your behalf I thank Martha for the talk, and partner Brian for being the driver. Martha has recently joined RC of Carlingford.
With trepidation I raised the subject of Rotary Leadership Institute, hoping to find participants in Course 53. Both Janelle and John volunteered to attend. Hopefully, there are sufficient other volunteers to ensure the Course proceeds. During the last week we received the resignation of Teresa from the Club. Teresa emphasised that she still wishes to support the Club through our signature fundraisings efforts. While attending a Foundation Seminar on Sunday, I learnt that the Foundation Dinner is to be held on 11th November. This clashes with a tentative plan for another Combined Zone Meeting and we will need to settle on an alternative date. I thank Max for agreeing to investigate whether the Club is eligible to compete in the Hills Shire Locals for Locals Awards. Next week our Guest Speaker is Gary Mangan – Branch Manager of Bendigo Bank, Dural. Gary will inform us of how the bank supports the community. Be prepared for a discussion on Colour and Foam Festival. Rotary Rocks Keith |
Night Report 22nd July

David (Garage Sale and St Gabriel’s Project)

St Gabriel’s – the school is conducting a thank you morning tea for the Club on Friday 26 July 2019 at 10am. All are welcome particularly members who assisted with the recent building work.
Potential project – David also advised that there may be a potential development project in India that the Club could become involved in; at this stage it is still under consideration – so he will keep us posted.
Peter (International)
Peter advised that he met last Friday with two members from the Lane Cove Rotary Club as well as a Director from NTA to finalise the agenda for the Flores trip. They are also finalising the details and costings for the Donor Visit and he will get this information to members as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, please let Peter know if you are interested in this.
Max (Social)
Max reported on the upcoming Trivia Night scheduled for Saturday 17 August 2019 at Cherrybrook Community Centre. Max has left attendee lists on the tables and asked members to complete them. As per last year, funds from this year’s Trivia Night will also be dedicated to Drought Relief.
Colin (Vocational)
Colin advised the Member Talks roster has been circulated and he encouraged anyone who hasn’t signed up to do so (otherwise the Sergeant will be chasing you up!!)
He also asked people to vote for the local community project based on upgrading Cherrybrook Lakes (the link to do so will be provided in this week’s Club bulletin).
Member Talk
Colin gave a Masterclass in conducting a member talk. His theme was Toyota Hilux ads in New Zealand in the1980’s. Even without sound (bugger!) he demonstrated that a good talk can catch the audience’s attention and engage them in the content – and hey a little bit of humour never goes astray!!
Guest Speaker
Colin Baxter welcomed and introduced our guest speaker, Martha Jabore OAM, who is the Director of the Homicide Victims Support Group. Martha, who was a recent keynote speaker at the District Conference, gave an exceptionally moving and thought provoking presentation on this topic. In particular she discussed the establishment of Grace’s Place at Doonside and the role it will play in supporting children and youth directly affected by homicide.
In the question and answer segment at the conclusion of her talk, a number of ways were identified for our Club to work with her organisation, including sewing pyjamas for the children, preparing care packages for them, and by passing on goods left over from our Garage Sale that they can use for their fundraising market stall at Parramatta.
Sergeant at Arm’s
Tony conducted a lively fines session.
