A Request from Vilde
Hey Bev! I'm coming back to Australia, to study at UNSW from mid july till january! Hope we can catch up, and hope I'll be welcome to join another Rotary meeting! I also had a question. Since I'm studying at UNSW I'll try to see if I can find somewhere to stay near Bondi or Coogee. Do you know of anyone renting out, or looking for a flat mate in the area, or does someone in the club might know of something! Will be lovely to see you all again. Xx

St Gabriel's School Completed Projects
Hi,
I went over to St Gabriel's this morning to fit our little plaques to the shed and the Sails.
The outdoor learning area looks great, with only a few items left to complete.
Here are a few photos. The tube in the ground is a speaking tube donated by Glenhaven Club.

The Garage Sale
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 7&8 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |

President's Report 4th June
Twenty nine members and two guests were welcomed to the meeting. Our guest speaker was Handeep Girn speaking about Collaboration Outcomes through Film, Know My Group and how he came to set up this business to promote the good work people and organisations do. David Hall a potential member was also welcomed. I understand David enjoyed the evening and will visit us again.
June is Rotary Fellowship month. Rotary Fellowships are international, independently organized groups of Rotarians, Rotarian spouses, and Rotaractors who share a common vocation or recreational interest. Rotary Fellowships give their members the opportunity to have fun, make new friends around the world, and enhance their experience in Rotary. Started 1928 with Esperanto Group. In 1947, a group of Rotarian boating enthusiasts began flying the Rotary flag from their crafts, calling themselves the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians — which now holds the distinction of being the oldest continuing fellowship. |
Yesterday Glenhaven held their 25th birthday here. It was a well run event that gave me some ideas for future events at our club. The Hills Shire Mayor, Castle Hill State MP, Rotary District Governor, and Governor Elect were present as were many members of their parent club (The Rotary Club of Castle Hill) and past members from far and near. About 100 in all. An amazing young vocalist from Cherrybrook provided the entertainment. She will come and sing for us too at a future suitable meeting, but not until after mid-July. It is probable she will sing at the Newcastle Conference. Do not forget to book in by the end of this month for a big discount. The Special Early Bird Full Conference Registration price of $200.00 per person is available NOW! Register and pay before midnight on 30 June 2018 to get this rocking package!
District Changeover is on July 7th (RSVP June 29th - $55)– Anne and I, Peter and Julianne are going, but it would be nice if a couple more members to join us. Directors, it is a great place to meet members from other clubs and an opportunity to talk to other clubs about potential joint ventures. RI and district is promoting joint ventures between clubs and friends of Rotary.
Bunnings BBQ. I still need a volunteer to take over Janelle’s BBQ co-ordinator role. Without one we can not continue to do them. They bring about $6000 to the club.
There is no meeting next week and changeover is on the 16th so no meeting on 18th either.
Newby’s (and others), a Rotary 101 session is being held at Ross & Helen‘s place June 7th at 7.30pm
Until we meet at changeover on Saturday June 16 for more fun and fellowship, have a great week making a difference.

Members Talk
Tom Westcott then gave us a most interesting talk on his recent involvement with a new concept of roofing over a large courtyard are at a local private school.
Tom’s system is a series of fabric covered pods and a self-supporting structure of up to 5 metres square.
The roof pods drain into a series of gutters running both ways made on aluminium extrusion and fitted with a PVC sleeve gutter below, which is not exposed to sunlight. This allows the aluminium to expand separately from the PVC gutter and reduce the likelihood of resultant damage.
The new fabric material that Tom is using is coated with a UV resistant product and is guaranteed for 15 years.
General Rosemary Clarke then introduced our guest speaker Hardeep Girn who gave the Club and outline of his background and his current involvement in producing films covering individual stories and community interest items.
Hardeep has just Joined Norwest Sunrise Club and wishes to spread the message of how he can help by producing these films promoting various causes.

This Week's Humour
It Could Never Happen to me
While on a road trip, an elderly couple stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch.
After finishing their meal, they left the restaurant, and resumed their trip. When leaving, the elderly woman unknowingly left her glasses on the table, and she didn't miss them until they had been driving for about forty minutes. By then, to add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance before they could find a place to turnaround, in order to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses.
All the way back, the elderly husband became the classic grumpy old man. He fussed and complained, and scolded his wife relentlessly during the entire return drive.
The more he chided her, the more agitated he became. He just wouldn't let up for a single minute. To her relief, they finally arrived at the restaurant. As the woman got out of the car, and hurried inside to retrieve her glasses, the old geezer yelled to her, While you're in there, you might as well get my hat and the credit card. |

A Brave Woman
This is a story of self-control and marksmanship by a brave, cool-headed woman with a small pistol against a fierce predator.
What’s the smallest caliber that you would trust to protect yourself? Here’s her story in her own words... "While out walking along the edge of a pond just outside my house with my soon to be ex-husband, discussing property settlement and other divorce issues, we were surprised by a huge 12-ft. alligator which suddenly emerged from the murky water and began charging us with its large jaws wide open. She must have been protecting her nest because she was extremely aggressive. If I had not had my little Beretta .25 caliber pistol with me, I would not be here today! Just one shot to my estranged husband's knee cap was all it took. The 'gator got him easily, and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace. It's one of the best pistols in my collection, plus the amount I saved in lawyer's fees was really incredible and his life insurance was a big bonus." Jim
