Beauty and The Beast - SYMT |
We Made The Hills Shire Times With Our Garage Sale!
Below is the article on our garage sale in the latest Hills Shire Times. Barry Freeman did a great job in facilitating this.
SYMT - Beauty and the Beast
Sydney Youth Musical Theatre is putting on Beauty and the Beast at Hornsby RSL in Mid Nov. This show will be put on by the under 21 age group performers. Thirty club members attended SYMT's previous show, Legally Blonde, in July. A club group booking is going to be made for Friday 18th November, at 7.30pm. Please let Colin Sharpe know by 30 October if you are interested in going.
Proudly presented by the Sydney Youth Musical Theatre
Based on the Academy-Award winning animated feature, the stage version of Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST includes all the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.
When Maurice becomes lost in the woods on the way to the fair, he seeks shelter in an old castle, but the master of the castle is a horrible beast that takes him captive. Maurice's daughter, Belle, must then give up her freedom to save his life. Belle's taming of the unfortunate Beast and his ultimate transformation into a handsome prince enthralled Broadway audiences for over 13 years.
SYMT is now in its 39th year of staging productions in the Sydney region, and it remains the largest exclusively youth musical society in Australia. Each year, we stage two productions: one in July for our 14-25 year old members , and one in November for our 10-18 year old members.
Back To The 80's Musical
The Berowra Musical Society is presenting the Back To The 80's musical and to date 11 club members have booked for the Friday 28 October show. The best option for dinner is the pub and would suggest 6.00ish with meals ordered by 6.30 (show is 8.00pm).
The show is on at the Berowra Community Centre just off the old highway and shares a car park with the adjoining cricket ground.
To view a short promo video for the show, click here.
To book for this show please contact Max Henderson.

BRIGHT FUTURE LEARNING CENTRE
Well we can not wait to be graced by the presence of our little munchkins at Bright Future Learning Centre in two weeks. They seem to have had HUGE growth spurts in the last six months.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sponsors the learning centre. As it is through your sponsorship the children have been given opportunity to be children and now the opportunity to be educatated teenager. Our kids now receive an education, healthy food and live in a loving and caring home, which they are so appreciative of.

For the last two weeks their grandparents Mel and Helen from the USA, have been with the kids doing craft, outings and the annual trip to the Supa Centre so that the kids could buy a new outfit. Which is comparable to shopping at David Jones :) Very lucky munchkins.
The new outfits. They look so grown up
Helen is a primary school teacher and allocates quality time to study and craft

Knitting was on the agenda
They also purchased a flat screen, wall mounted tele for the kids and they also got to celebrate the birthday of Bipin now 15 and Nirmala now 12. Apparently half the town came to the party.

Epping Rotary 2016 Trivia Night- Saturday 12 November
We are aiming to raise $20,000 towards the extremely important counselling work undertaken by CCA in Epping through the Shack for young people with a range of mental health issues. This services young people in the broader area.
This type of intervention is very expensive and requires considerable resourcing.
I am asking that you form a table of 6-10 people as a team representing your Rotary Club.
It would be great to have your support.
Please contact Ian Bittner for bookings- details on the flyer- or me on 0410685417
Many thanks for your support

President's Report 17th October 2016
Monday was an enlightening night. We learnt how difficult it is for young people between 12 and 25 who are suffering from mental illness. Robert from Headspace had lots of statistics for us – mind boggling in fact. Sometimes we can be sheltered from the real facts but 4 in every 16 young people will suffer a form of mental illness! Luckily Headspace is a “one stop shop” that can offer assistance.
On a lighter night, we all donned crazy hats – and I mean crazy. The abominable snowman, pirates, Greek captains, Chinese characters, gardeners, princesses, Russian Cossacks and devils were all there. It was nice to kick up our heels and have some fun now that the Garage Sale is over.
We had a wrap up of funds from Bob. How well did we do? The community certainly helped us to raise money for our charities as well as being able to find a home for what was left over. Fantastic. Again well done all and thank you.
We now head into a saner period of Rotary activities – vocational visits, Melbourne Cup meeting, partner’s night, committee meetings etc. but still we are Serving Humanity and having fun.

Did his member talk…. Was born in Canley Vale, small hospital. Lived on 5 acres at Horsley Park, and as a child and teenager helped his parents worked their small farm with chickens, quails, lambs, cows, veggie garden etc.
Left school in year 11 and then took on an apprentership as a plumber, which did worked both domestic and commercial plumbering for big and small companies. He is now working for Trevelle Homes, as a building supervisor and enjoying a new challenge.
Bob Davidson advised Christine Duffy, the District Governor congratulated the Club on a job well done for the Garage Sale.
Please see Bob’s email for the breakdown of funds regarding the Garage Sale.
The 3 charities that took all the left overs, which saved us a lot of work cleaning up, were very grateful.
Barry mentioned how great it was for was to have Charlies help re FACEBOOK.
Winners of the Crazy Hats were: John, Andrew, Colin McGowan and Bev. Davidson.
Robert McElory, from Headspace was introduced as our guest speaker.
Headspace is non government but does get government funding. Robert works out of the Penrith Office, and is a Community Development Office. Our nearest Headspace is at Castle Hill, quite new.
Headspace is trying to get out in the community that it is ok and acceptable to talk about Mental Health, and to have the courage to ask for help.
The Headspace offices try to be a ‘one stop shop’ under one roof, to assist with all problems for people between the ages of 12-25 years. No referrals are required, just come in, to this youth friendly area where they have physio’s, doctors, etc.
50% of people come in add hock with no appointments. They first speak with an liaison officer, they are assessed and based on the conversation are directed to the right area of help.
They assist with showing how to do resumes, apply for jobs, study skills, anxiety.
Mental Health is a huge cost to the work force through loss of work. Statistics show 4 in 16 people will suffer from mental health at some time in their life. 25 out of 100 will suffer from depression. 75% of people don’t seek the help they need.
Talking to a friend, teacher can help. Suicide is the leading cause of death between 20-24 year age group. Black Dog, Beyond Blue and many more are out there to help, but in Australia living with mental health, the biggest concern is the stigma – fear of being judged. Having this fear without reaching out for help only compounds the situation.
Headspace is to have a hub where these people can hang out, no cost, drop in feel which helps cut through the red tape. They try to help the whole person with a holistic approach. They are also now visiting schools for early intervention.

This Week's Humour
A Harley Biker
A biker is riding by the zoo when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage.
Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.
The biker jumps off his Harley, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.
Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents who thank him endlessly.
A reporter has watched the whole event..
The reporter addressing the Harley rider says, 'Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I've seen a man do in my whole life.'
The Harley rider replies, 'Why, it was nothing, really the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger and acted as I felt right.'
The reporter says, 'Well, I'll make sure this won't go unnoticed.
I'm a journalist, and tomorrow's paper will have this story on the front page. So, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?'
The biker replies, 'I'm an SAS soldier just returned from Afghanistan and a Labor party supporter' The journalist leaves.
The following morning the biker buys the paper to see news of his actions, and reads, on the front page:
SAS SOLDIER ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH!
And that pretty much sums up the media's approach to the news these days.
