"Time to tune in to Radio Active Live"
The social committee is offering you the opportunity to go to see a series of “Radio Plays” performed live at the Hills Lodge on Sunday 20 August at 3pm. We have been a couple times before. They are extremely funny and enjoyable, enacting short radio plays and radio advertisements complete with sound effects. The sort of thing our parents (or Grandparents) enjoyed.
The cost is $27.50 including a full afternoon tea. See the attached flyer and the following email.
If you would like to come please pay at our next Rotary meeting. If you are an apology and would like to come please email me asap and transfer the funds to WPHC Rotary General Account BSB 062 890 Account No 10052963 With ”Radio and your name” in the description. Please ensure that you have the correct account.

We're looking for generous volunteers like you to donate their time on Saturday, 19 August, at the GWS Giants' match at Spotless Stadium.
Thanks to the Giants' game day sponsors, Dyldam, and Channel 7, the game day is also going to be an exciting and unique way to fundraise for the House!
Stars from across Channel 7 will be on hand in the hours leading up to the game to host a Facebook Live telethon, with challenges and activities running all afternoon, and fantastic prizes up for grabs.
All that's missing is YOU! Read on to see how you can be part of the day.
It's a sad fact that not every family with a seriously ill child can find accommodation at Ronald McDonald House Westmead when their child needs hospital treatment, simply because there are not enough beds.
This fundraising Live-a-thon will go towards the remaining $2 million needed to complete the new, 60-room Ronald McDonald House Westmead, which will accommodate more than 1,360 families per year.
It's a fantastic opportunity for the House to get support from the GWS Giants and the 7 News community, and we would love your help to collect donations around the Stadium on game day!
Of course, all volunteers receive a free ticket to the GWS Giants v West Coast Eagles match, so you can arrive early to catch some of the action, or stay after your shift.
When: Saturday, 19 August, 2017
Where: Spotless Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park
Time: Shifts run from 2pm-5pm, or from 4.30pm – 7.30pm
Dress: Neat casual clothes, closed-toe shoes, pants or jeans and appropriate t shirt. The House will provide identification.
Sound good? If you are keen to volunteer, please contact Corporate Programs Coordinator Josh Binns on: 9845 0600 or [email protected]

Trivia Night
Travellers Diary
Hi All, Well we are now starting to feel the cold over night so out with the Doona which we have not used for the last two months. From our final destination in far North Queensland we are now 800 kms south east of Karumba where it was a comfortable in the 32oC daytime and 25oC overnight. Now camped on the edge of Theresa Creek Dam in a camping area, set aside by the local shire council for fully self contained caravans and motorhomes. As there isn't any power, town water or sewage outlets available on the individual sites we bring our fresh water or use the water from rain water tanks which is rationed only for drinking. For washing purposes we use bore water or that pumped from the dam.
Our journey from Karumba has taken us through some very interesting country side, including drought declared area, ancient volcanic eruptions, cattle grazing properties, and now from Charters Towers to Collinsville, the gold mines of the 1880's have turned into massive open cut coal mines with 3 kms long trains taking export coal to the coast. The inland water ways around here attract many types of birds and ducks that feed on the marine life and vegetation that we see from our camp site, while waiting to catch red claw Yabbies in the opera house trap. The sun is now high in the sky and the day is 25oC which is making our camping stay around the dam enjoyable.
Regards Howard and Megan

When the Widdington sisters discover an unconscious stranger on the beach and nurse him back to health their ordered life of cocoa before bed and the village jumble sale is transformed.
With a smattering of German between them, the sisters communicate with their patient – often with very humorous results and the assistance of the forthright housekeeper – and discover he is a promising young violinist.
Along with his music Andreas brings a sense of mischief and fun as well as an unsettling ability to stir up lost feelings of love and longing. The unsettled household is further disrupted when a visiting artist overhears Andreas playing the violin, presenting an opportunity that must be seized . . .

Colin Baxter: Member talk “a memorable happening”
Timeframe Nov-Dec 1988, Colin joined National Mutual which was experiencing significant UK growth. Colin was offered a position in the UK which he accepted.
There were 3 trips to the UK, the 3rd was via New York, 2 days of work, one of pleasure then on to London. While Colin was out shopping with the girls, Gwen took a call from British Airways to say the flight the next day was cancelled, but they could get on an alternate Concord flight. Gwen couldn’t commit. When Colin got back he couldn’t believe his luck…. A big “YES”.
The flight was amazing. Not only faster (23 miles/min) but also higher (you see the curvature of the earth) than conventional aircraft. ….a truly “memorable happening”
Then Sgt John introduced our guests, Brett and Terrisa Murray, Founding Executive Director of Make Bullying History Foundation. Brett gave a very animated talk.
Bullying is misunderstood – it is long term violence or threat of violence.
Australia experiences 2,500 suicides pa, mostly children and younger men. Many instances are brought about from bullying. Brett and Terrisa got involved over 13 years ago from their personal bullying experiences. They have supplied over $100k of backpack kits for women impacted by domestic violence and Westmead Hospital asked for packs specifically for teens.
Cronulla Sharks are a signature partner – they have presented to the team, and the team are an ideal male role model.
Boys are bullies because they have low self esteem. Girls have a better feeling of self worth if they feel protected. These can be fixed, and the schools program is very effective, it gets results.
Now they present at schools all over the country and NZ, at corporate level.
They are based in the Hills, and are now focussed on schools in the Hills.
They are a registered charity and have published five books (international). Read more at www.makebullyinghistory.org
Paul L. won the raffle & Tony C. won “heads & tails”. Rosemary was the “barrell girl”, collecting fines – John did rather well.
Pres Colin did a wrap-up and David started off the national anthem.

Golden Years
As we slowly move through our “golden years” and retirement, we need to keep ourselves occupied with small projects... like this guy!
But please, for your sake and others you love, be careful! I know, I saw it right away too... No safety glasses or hearing protection. And, I caught something else that is really very important. He has no gloves on - if that pull-cord breaks or his hands slip he could smack himself right in the face. I might be up there in age but I am still sharp as a tack. Stay sharp, my friends Colin S |
