2017 Book Sale

The 2017 book sale is fast approaching and it is time to start preparing! This year the book sale has been postponed by a couple of weeks from the usual timing in late March to Friday 7 (9am to 5pm), Saturday 8 (9am to 5pm) and Sunday 11 (11am to 2pm) of April.

This is due to the fact that some of our key players will be overseas during the lead up to the actual book sale itself. This includes Andrew & Desley (13 Feb to 20 Mar), Bob & Bev (16 Mar to 14 Apr) and Colin & Anne (start Apr to end May).

Whilst we now have some great additional people on our committee (Neville & Heather Hansen & Charlie), we will need all the help we can get from club members & partners to make this year’s book sale a success. This is especially true for the book sort days Saturday 11th, 25th March and Tuesday 4th April) where we really need people to help us for the whole day up to around 3 or 4pm.

One of the most onerous jobs is packing the sorted boxes of books away on the book stands at the end of the sort day. Many times this is left to a small number of very dedicated people. Likewise we need assistance with the set up days Wednesday 5th & Thursday 6th April.

In order to make it easier on our backs, knees, hips, etc, we are ditching the conventional fruit boxes (which are also extremely difficult to source) and are moving to the Lifeline size cardboard box which is about 2/3 the size of the fruit box and will hence will limit the total lifting weight to around 10kg.  This is why Lifeline went to this style & size of box in order to comply with OH&S requirements for their ever aging members!

These boxes come flat packed & are taped together as required.  At the end of the book sale the tape will be cut & the box flat packed for storage. (See photo on right showing these boxes - note the 10Kg written on the side of the box in the foreground!).

The Church has agreed to let us run the book sale on the Sunday from 11am to 2pm when we will start the usual pack up routine.
This will provide an extra 3 hours on the Saturday and 3 hours on the Sunday, ie a total of 6 extra selling hours.

The 2016 book sale raised around $14,000 and we are aiming to better this in 2017.

To do this, we need help from ALL club members during the book sort days -

Saturday 11 March
Saturday 25 March
Tuesday 4 April

and during the sale itself from - Wednesday 5 to Sunday 9 April

The milestone dates for this year's book sale are as follows:

RYLA 2017 - this is an excerpt from the latest DG's E News & shows why we support RYLA

RYLA 2017 was run and won by 84 new RYLArians. The Organising Committee chaired by David Clark, supported the Facilitators lead by Amanda Firkins together with Mum & Dad (David and Dianne Waterhouse) arranged an excellent program that actively engaged and developed the attendees. The outdoor activities were challenging and the indoor speakers were compelling.

Well Done and Thank you to all who made it happen....and I hope that the experience convinces the new RYLArians to join Rotaract so they can continue to enjoy and enhance the Rotary experience.

President's Report 27th February 2017

Rotary Youth Exchange is such an exciting program which can change a person’s life. Our guest speaker Sonya Ahern showed us the result of this program – confident, ready to embrace change, loving life with wonderful “family” and friends in Iowa. It was a pleasure to listen to Sonya.

At the same time we loved having Poul and Ellen Jenkins from Denmark with us. Poul was the Danish Club counsellor for our exchange student Bethany Ferguson in 2013. It was great to hear how dynamic and outgoing Bethany was and the wonderful ambassador she was for Australia and our club.

The club is busy with the Book Sale coming up soon. I have shared the Facebook site and have some books coming from Newcastle via family! Please spread the word and let’s get behind this fundraiser. As I said on Monday evening, there are so many people who need our assistance and an hour of your help, especially prior to the event, can make all the difference. Contact Andrew Little if in doubt of times or refer to the website.

Please remember this Sunday’s working bee at Graham’s house. Let’s hope the weather is kind!!
Have a great week, stay dry and remember that we are serving humanity.

Night Report 27th February 2017

President Rosemary opened the meeting and welcomed all guests.

Stan B was invited to propose the Toast and Ross B to say Grace.

Rotary Fact was a quote from Sir Clem Renouf who was the Australian RI President in 1978/79 who gave the idea for

End Polio Now:
“Rotary takes ordinary people and gives them extraordinary opportunities to do more with their lives than they ever dreamed possible”.

Polio has only had 3 cases this year in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. We are so close to eliminating the disease. What an amazing feat and we will do it by donating through Rotary.

Tonight’s guests included the following:
  • Paul & Ellen Jensen from Horsens East Denmark, who were Exchange counsellors for Bethany Ferguson
  • Sonya Ahern (ex-Exchange student) and her husband Eric Junkkari
  • Paul Laroumanie

President Rosemary thanked the following members:
  • The Book sale helpers for putting stalls and boxes together on Friday. Apparently they were finished by 1pm so the afternoon shift didn’t get a look in.
  • Teresa J for organizing the Bowel care kits and sessions at Cherrybrook Village.
  • John T and his assistant Anna for organizing Pride of Workmanship awards
  • Ross B for organizing Rotary 101 this Thurs (16th March)
  • Barry F, Colin S and Sarah Z for accompanying her to the District Conference which was excellent. They had outstanding speakers and it was very motivating and fullof interesting facts about Rotary.

We then had the following reports:
  • Andrew L -  good start to the book sort on the weekend with the Lifeline boxes much easier to handle. The 2nd major book sort is on 25th March. We need to promote the Book sale as it’s been a slow start to receive books this year.
  • John T – looking at organizing a visit to Careflight on the 5th June. 6.30 pm start at Northmead (near Westmead Children’s Hospital). Cost will be either $30 pp (no dessert) or $36 pp (with dessert).
  • David T – meet at Cuthbertson’s place this coming Sunday for the working bee (back hoe and all). Also looking at organizing Anzac night with Lions Club of WPH. Guest speaker is Dr Kevin Smith OAM regarding the death march at Sandakan. Date is Monday 24th April at WPH Sports Club.

Update from Sarah Z:
  • Watched a movie and also went to Crinitis in Parramatta – had a dessert called Bombalini which has Italian donuts with cinnamon sugar, Nutella, Butterscotch sauce and ice cream).
  • Went to the District Conference – very interesting and discovered that as Rotarians, we love to grill sausages!

Member Talk was from Cawas S:
  • Born in Mumbai – 1 of 2 kids.
  • Left home at 22/23 yo and went to the Middle East to work for a company which has approx. 67% of the automotive market there.
  • Has also worked in Oman, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Canada.
  • Met Rashna at a club and they have 3 kids – 2 daughters and a son.
  • Was working for Honda Canada but then moved to Australian where Cawas worked for IBM.
  • Life is full of coincidences.

Colin S then introduced our guest speaker for the night – Sonya Ahern.
  • Sonya was born in Gympie (Country Queensland).
  • In 1986, after a very rigorous selection process, she was selected to go on exchange to Fairfield, Iowa (USA).
  • In that same year, Ronald Reagan was the US President, the Challenger space shuttle blew up and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred.
  • Sonya had written in her diary when she got to Des Moine airport in Iowa that it was ‘bloody freezing’ and that she was going to die.
  • She studied American politics, did drama classes, also art, interior design, maths but where she really excelled was in speech classes.
  • Sonya went from being a shy, quiet country girl to having the confidence to speak at clubs, schools and entering public speaking competitions.
  • You could tell by her enthusiasm that Sonya enjoyed her exchange year in Iowa, even though she didn’t get the Scandinavian country that she really, really wanted.

Barry F then did a great job impersonating the Tax Office by raising some serious cash with his fines – including anyone who wore glasses and anyone who paid with a credit card.

Heads or Tails was won by Angelo C.
Jim S won the raffle (for the second week in a row).

Closing remarks from President Rosemary was that we are in a fortunate position to be able to help many people through our fund raising, so let’s make the Book Sale the very best yet by telling our neighbours and work colleagues. Printing copies of the flyers and putting it in letter boxes in our local areas would also be a big help.
There are so many people who need our help and this is the perfect opportunity to do so.

This Week's Humour

God's Plan for Aging
Most seniors never get enough exercise. In His wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys and other things thus doing more walking. And God looked down and saw that it was good.
Then God saw there was another need. In His wisdom He made seniors lose coordination so they would drop things requiring them to bend, reach & stretch. And God looked down and saw that it was good.
Then God considered the function of bladders and decided seniors would have additional calls of nature requiring more trips to the bathroom, thus providing more exercise. God looked down and saw that it was good.
So if you find as you age, you are getting up and down more, remember it’s God’s will. It is all in your best interest even though you mutter under your breath.
Nine Important Facts To Remember As We Grow Older
#9 Death is the number 1 killer in the world.
#8 Life is sexually transmitted.

#7 Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.
#6 Men have 2 motivations: hunger and hanky panky, and they can't tell them apart. If you see a gleam in his eyes, make him a sandwich.
#5 Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, months, maybe years.
#4 Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing.
#3 All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.
#2 In the 60's, people took LSD to make the world weird Now the world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal.
#1 Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow.

Please share this wisdom with others while I go to the bathroom.
