Anna's May Report

Hi Everyone!

This Month has been quiet (compared to the other months) but also so rewarding. I have moved host families and I am fitting in well. I am participating more at school and have all my weekends booked up with school and rotary events.

My Japanese is improving so much I keep getting compliments on how fast I am learning. I have made so many new friends as well, and if I have nothing on I usually can easily organise something quickly with a couple friends.

Nothing much will be happening besides rotary events and such. It's nice getting used to the easy pace of life. Although soon, I will be the only exchange student in our district as everyone will be going home. Hopefully I get to meet the new ones coming in soon.

Regards
Anna

Selected News from Didi Foundation

Deepak (our Didi Nepal team member) has just started teaching our first evening computer class and we are looking to expand this program into a portable program where, with laptops, we will be able to teach this program to marginalised groups on the outskirts of Kathmandu.
Our women's health program was successful with disadvantaged women receiving a free reproductive education program with the results being:
  • 542 women educated on their reproductive system
  • 375 women attended a free clinic for: Pap Smear, breast examination, blood test, urine test and had access to free medicines for treatment of the likes of thrush, diarrhea, worms, anti-biotic, Panadol and basic medicines.
  • Inserted 28 pessary rings and replaced 18
  • 40 women were diagnosed with 3rd stage prolapse and Didi Nepal has organised for these women to receive free specialist treatment and operation
  • Men's Education Program. Partners or carers of women in need of medical treatment were educated on women's health in order for them to support their wives.
A huge thanks to Laxmi Koirala our Women's Health Manager for organising the program and is currently organsing a future health program in Ramechhap. Appreciation to the DAK Foundation for their financial support and another thank you to Marg Ogden and her friends who raised money to cover the short-fall of running this program which was due to an excess of women requiring support.

Spamalot presented by SYMT - Hornsby RSL Club - Friday, 14 July 7:30pm

Written by Eric Idle, and presented by Sydney Youth Musical Theatre, Spamalot is lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. It retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

SYMT (Sydney Youth Musical Theatre) are renowned for tremendous quality shows featuring performers aged between 14 to 25 years. They have two productions pa with July for the older U25 age group and in November for the U18 age group.

Our club members and partners have developed a strong following over the past three years with usually twenty to thirty supporting each show. Combined with the recently refurbished bistro an affordable and enjoyable night out is readily achievable.

To book please deposit $32.00 per attendee into our Rotary General Account by Friday 23 June 2017 as follows:

Significant Club fundraising events during the year

President's Report 5th June 2017

Our last Rotary activity for this year has been held with a vocational visit to CareFlight!        An amazing organisation founded by a group of very passionate people whose one ideal was to provide for those needing immediate health care. We were all impressed with the organisation – its research and development branch right through to the pilots, paramedics and flight crews involved. Thank you John for organising a great evening.
Vivid was a great success. How wonderful is our city especially when lit up so beautifully. Thank you to Ros and the social team for organising this.
We have the Changeover on Saturday 17th June at Pennant Hills Golf Club at 6:30 for 7:00pm. Pre-dinner drinks will be courtesy of yourselves however some wine is provided during the 3 course meal. It is the culmination of a wonderful year where we as a club have achieved so much. It is time for us to celebrate and then welcome Colin and his team into the new Rotary year.
So for the last time, have fun and fellowship whilst serving Humanity.

This Week's Humour

Grumpy People Fixing Australia

Some economic theory for your consideration!

Absolutely love this, who-ever thought it up is a genius,  they need congratulating.    enjoy

Dear Mr. Turnbull as the official replacement for  Mr. Abbott,

Please find below our suggestion for fixing Australia 's economy.
Instead of giving billions of dollars to car companies & other business that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan.

You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan:

     There are about 10 million people over 50 in the work force.

     Pay them $1 million each severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

     1) They MUST retire.
     Ten million job openings - unemployment fixed

     2) They MUST buy a new Australian car.
     Ten million cars ordered - Car Industry fixed

     3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage -
     Housing Crisis fixed

     4) They MUST send their kids to school/college/university -
     Crime rate fixed

     5) They MUST buy $100 WORTH of alcohol/tobacco a week .......
     and there's your money back in duty/tax etc

     6) Instead of stuffing around with the carbon emissions trading scheme that makes us pay for the major polluters, tell the greedy bastards to
reduce their pollution emissions by 75% within 5 years or we shut them down.

    7)  Cut down on pollies perks - they earn enough money to pay for their own petrol, food, drinks, airfares for their wives & families like all other hard working Aussies do.  We pay big money but we still get MONKEYS.

    8)  No government credit cards for pollies - let them get their own then they will be more careful about how they use it and pay up on time so as not to incur interest.

 It can't get any easier than that!

 P.S. If more money is needed, have all members of parliament pay back their falsely claimed expenses and second home allowances

 If you think this would work, please forward to everyone you know. If not, please disregard.

     Grumpies of the World Unite

     Also ...
     Let's put the pensioners in jail and the criminals in a nursing home.

     This way the pensioners would have access to showers, hobbies and walks.
     They'd receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical treatment, wheel chairs etc and they'd receive money instead of paying it out.
     They would have constant video monitoring, so they could be helped instantly, if they fell, or needed assistance.
     Bedding would be washed twice a week, and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them.
     A guard would check on them every 20 minutes and bring their meals and snacks to their cell.
     They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.
     They would have access to a library, weight room, spiritual counselling, pool and education
     Simple clothing, shoes, slippers, PJ's and legal aid would be free, on request.
     Private, secure rooms for all, with an exercise outdoor yard, with gardens
     Each senior could have a PC a TV radio and daily phone calls.
     There would be a board of directors to hear complaints, and the guards would have a code of conduct that would be strictly adhered to.

     The criminals would get cold food, be left all alone and unsupervised.
    Lights off at 8pm, and showers once a week.  Live in a tiny room and pay
 $600.00 per week and have no hope of ever getting out.

     Think about this (more points of contention):
     ------------------------------ ------------------------------ -------
     THE AUSTRALIAN CONSTITUTION They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq ......... Why don't we just give them ours?
     It was drawn up by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for centuries and we're not using it anymore.
     ------------------------------ ------------------------------ -------
     THE 10 COMMANDMENTS
     The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments posted in a courthouse or Parliament, is this -
     You cannot post 'Thou Shalt Not Steal',

      Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery' and
      Thou Shall Not Lie' in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians......
     It creates a hostile work environment.
     ------------------------------ ------------------------------ -------
       Think about this .... If you don't want to forward this for fear of offending someone --

YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM!
It is time for us grumpy old folk of Australia to speak up!

THE BACK NINE

  I FIRST STARTED READING THIS EMAIL & WAS READING FAST UNTIL I REACHED THE THIRD SENTENCE. I STOPPED AND STARTED OVER READING SLOWER AND THINKING ABOUT EVERY WORD. THIS EMAIL IS VERY THOUGHT PROVOKING. MAKES YOU STOP AND THINK.
READ SLOWLY!

AND THEN IT IS WINTER

You know ... Time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams.

But, here it is... The back nine of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?

I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that I was only on the first hole and the back nine was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like.

But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey...they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change....Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd become.

Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so...now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, that though I'm on the back nine, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over on this earth...it's over. A new adventure will begin! Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.

So, if you're not on the back nine yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether you're on the back nine or not!

You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life....so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!!

"Life" is a gift to you.  The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one. LIVE IT WELL! ENJOY TODAY! DO SOMETHING FUN! BE HAPPY ! HAVE A GREAT DAY Remember "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.

LASTLY, CONSIDER THIS:

~Your kids are becoming you......but your grandchildren are perfect!

~Going out is good.. Coming home is better!

~You forget names.... But it's OK because some people forgot they even knew you!!!

~You realize you're never going to be really good at anything like golf.

~The things you used to care to do, you aren't as interested in anymore, but you really don't care that you aren't as interested.

~You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV 'ON' than in bed. It's called "pre-sleep".

~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch..

~You tend to use more 4 letter words ... "what?"..."when?"... ???

~You notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless"?!!!

~What used to be freckles are now liver spots.

~Everybody whispers.

~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet.... 2 of which you will never wear.

  ~~~But Old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old movies, and best of all, OLD FRIENDS!!
Stay well, "OLD FRIEND!" Send this on to other "Old Friends!" and let them laugh in AGREEMENT!!! It's Not What You Gather, But What You Scatter That Tells What Kind Of Life You Have Lived.
TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN; YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE, SO ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS
Pizza
While working at a pizza parlour I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go.
He appeared to be alone and the cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6.
He thought about it for some time then said ' just cut it into 4 pieces I don't think I'm hungry enough to eat 6 pieces.
They walk among us;
