Tree of Joy Articles
Stan
I received such joy from the ladies at Camp Quality when Patricia and I delivered 46 gifts to them last Friday - they were overwhelmed with the response. These gifts were then going to the Randwick Childrens Hospital to all the children with cancer. I was then given a Christmas card thanking me and the club for all the work with the Tree of Joy. I was then presented with a plaque thanking the club for what we have done for them . They then asked if we could send some photos of our members with sorting the gifts on Thursday night as the wanted to put the photos in their news letter.
I then presented the plaque to President Colin and Nick Chuah.

Dear Stan & Ross,
The wonderful gifts were delivered to Randwick Children’s Hospital this morning by our lovely Monika Kodrun and one of our puppets, Dean. The team were overwhelmed with the generosity and I thought you’d like to see one of the photos. Please see attached.
I believe the presents will be given to the children on Christmas Day.
Thank you again for including Camp Quality in this wonderful program. There will be plenty of smiles on the children’s faces on Christmas thanks to all your hard work.
Merry Christmas to you all.
Regards,
Tania

The Tree of Joy…
So many grateful families who now have children who will receive a gift this year, when otherwise there would have been none.
So many grateful adults who also will receive a gift when otherwise there would have been none.
That’s the response from those who were recipients of gifts from the Tree of Joy in Cherrybrook Shopping Centre which is a community project by the Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook for many many years.
The majority of residents in The Hills don’t feel the pain of Christmas when there is little money to buy food, let alone gifts for the kids. So, to receive a present from under the Tree of Joy is very much appreciated by those in need.
Each year, in conjunction with Cherrybrook Shopping Centre, a Christmas tree is laden with gift tags which list the gender/age and other information of the Child or Adult. This allows a relevant gift to be placed under the tree by a kind person in our community who has given their time and money to purchase a gift and place it there.
The Rotarians then gather them all together, rewrap them appropriately and then deliver to the Charities chosen to be beneficiaries for each particular year. To name a few of the beneficiaries this year….. Wesley Mission Brighter Futures Programme, Burnside at Normanhurst, Parramatta Mission, Anglicare, Assertive Outreach at Pennant Hills, Meals on Wheels, Shine for Kids, Taldemunde, Camp Quality and Mariyong Public School.
Rotarians say that this is the most rewarding of all the projects they work on throughout the year because it is directly rewarding people in need at a time of year when they need help and support most. Giving of yourself to those less fortunate is the most rewarding of all and is what Rotary is all about “Service above Self”.
A very big Thank You must go to the Cherrybrook Shopping Centre Management for their invaluable assistance to our Club to allow this project to continue.
If you would like to be involved in a Club where community projects such as this are always on the Agenda, please contact 0468 330 667. You too can help make a difference!

January is Vocational Service Month
One of the most important aspects of Rotary is building relationships. Learning about professions and job involvement is one of those foundation stones to creating an environment in our Rotary Clubs which builds relationships. Often during the introduction of a new member there can be glimpses of what job choice has been made. And there are those occasional programs devoted to Rotary membership talks where a new member or a more seasoned member shares their life story and work experiences.
Intriguing, interesting and informative are words that will often describe these vocational talks.
New and innovative work positions are being created in our world. Vocational Service month is a great time to celebrate and learn about the life work of our members, whether it is a profession that has lots of history or newly established.
This month and in the months ahead, take some time during your club meetings to have Rotarians share their stories of what they do to impact their world. Relationships will be stronger and one of the reasons for the founding of Rotary will be expressed.

Significant Club fundraising events during the year
The Book Sale March 2017. As the result of a lot of hard work the April Book Sale was a great success, especially from the organisers Max Henderson, Andrew Little and Clive Denmark. Funds raised were circa $13,000. Well done.
2017 Trivia Night
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 26 August 20167at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising just over $5,000 towards the charities we support.

The Garage Sale
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 7&8 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result.

President's Report on Christmas Lunch
Editors Note: A reprise for those who may have missed the late inclusion last bulletin.
Thirty eight members and partners and extended family met at Springfield House to celebrate the festive season with a Christmas theme lunch. It was good see the Christmas outfits come out of the wardrobe. The four children were entertained with some Christmas theme games – thank you Rosemary, Anne, Celine and Racheal. Santa did not forget them either.
Thank you to Anne and Stacey for decorating the tables. Thank you to Frank and his staff for serving up a fabulous meal.
A couple of corny Christmas Jokes
It is with regret that I have to advise that Joseph has resigned from the Club. Joseph has explained that it is nothing to do with the Club or its members but rather he feels Rotary was not for him at the moment, but will consider it again in a couple of years. Joseph will remain a Friend of the Club and assist with our projects. On behalf of the club I wish him and Carmen well for the future.
I look forward to seeing you on Monday night to celebrate Santa’s coming. We will see who has been naughty or nice. Do not forget to book in your partner and bring a Kris Kringle gift. Next Monday is the last meeting until Jan 11th.

A couple of corny Christmas Jokes
- How many gifts can Santa squeeze in an empty stocking? One. It’s not empty after the first one.
- Another helicopter tried to land in our garden today. I think we’re going to have to reduce our Christmas lights a bit.

President's Report 18th Dec
It was a great pleasure to welcome 56 fellow members, partners and guests to the special Christmas meeting tonight. We welcomed guests Phil Davison (Bob’s brother), and Judy Cuthbertson. Cawas and Rashna are back after more than a month in India. It was pleasing to see 21 partners, (Anne, Patricia, Gwen, Julie, Glenda, Beverly, Megan, Heather, Lynne, Marc, Celine, Desley, Robert, Margaret, Pamela, Lyn, Rebecca, Rashna, Dianne, Julianne and Jill) present.
Thank you Anne and Celine for providing some tasty treats to go with the tea and coffee. Given the hilarity during the Kris Kringle, the fines session and the reluctance to go home after the meeting tonight was a fitting end to the first six months of this Rotary Year. Business Items

This Week's Humour
AVOCADOS
A wife asks her husband, "Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk and if they have avocados, get 6.”
A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk.
The wife asks him, "Why did you buy 6 cartons of milk?"
He replied, "They had avocados."
If you're a woman, I'm sure you're going back to read it again!
Men will get it the first time.
My work is done here.

Amazing discovery from Canada
Scientists at NRC in Ottawa have announced the discovery of the HEAVIEST element yet known to science.
AND yes ... It was discovered in Canada, which is now the leading producer.
The new element is Governmentium (Gv).
It has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.
These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lefton-like particles called peons.
Since Governmentium has no electrons or protons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes in contact.
A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction normally taking less than a second to take from four days to four years to complete.
Governmentium has a normal half-life of 4 - 8 years.
It does not decay but instead undergoes a reorganisation in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.
In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganisation will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.
This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration.
This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass.
When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium, an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.
All of the money is consumed in the exchange, and no other by-products are produced.

Buddha the optimist
Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.”
