Lester Pearson (Member RC Gosford North) presents "Save Our Kids"
An excerpt from a speech by Emma McBride MP (15th February 2017)
I rise today to recognise a life changing program running on the Central Coast: Save Our Kids. It was created by Lester Pearson, who was named 2017 Central Coast Citizen of the Year for his work with the program and another passion project, Coats for Kids, which provides warm clothing for children sleeping rough or in refuges. Lester has dedicated himself to supporting some of the most vulnerable young people on the coast. Save Our Kids began in 2011 at the Rotary Club of Gosford North and was founded as a youth suicide prevention program, which filled a gap that saw Rotary Club supporting young achievers but not doing as much as they would like to support those struggling with mental health issues. ...

Tree of Joy 2018
Another great result. The Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook combined with Cherrybrook Shopping Centre to run ran our popular Tree of Joy program again this year. The Rotary Club works with local charities to identify people who need support during the Christmas period. Cherrybrook Village provided the site for the tree and a drop-off point for the presents. The program collects presents from the community and distributes them to people who would otherwise not receive a Christmas present. We collected around 800 presents this year with an estimated value of $35,000 from our ever generous local community. The presents collected by the Tree of Joy program correspond to the wish list provided by each recipient and are given to them at Christmas time by the charity that is looking after their welfare. We thank the community for their generosity and giving people some Christmas joy that they would not have otherwise received.
January is Vocational Service Month
One of the most important aspects of Rotary is building relationships. Learning about professions and job involvement is one of those foundation stones to creating an environment in our Rotary Clubs which builds relationships. Often during the introduction of a new member there can be glimpses of what job choice has been made. And there are those occasional programs devoted to Rotary membership talks where a new member or a more seasoned member shares their life story and work experiences.
Intriguing, interesting and informative are words that will often describe these vocational talks.
New and innovative work positions are being created in our world.
Vocational Service month is a great time to celebrate and learn about the life work of our members, whether it is a profession that has lots of history or newly established.
This month and in the months ahead, take some time during your club meetings to have Rotarians share their stories of what they do to impact their world. Relationships will be stronger and one of the reasons for the founding of Rotary will be expressed.

Tonight we celebrated Christmas with a Kris Kringle under candle light. Thank you to Santa and his trusty Elf for stopping by. I hope everyone survived the storm without undue damage. I know the Baxter’s are unable to attend tonight as they suffered a number of fallen trees and their road is still blocked. In noticed that the McGowan’s had a tree in their pool and I hear the Makin’’s had a neighbours tree branch break some roof tiles. A big thank you to all who have run the Tree of Joy program and turned up to sort last Thursday. Thank you to Bernard who turned up everyday to collect the presents from the shopping centre and deliver them to the Turnbull’s. Thank you to David and Jill who once again so generously opened up their house for sorting. We collected around 750 presents which was a about 80% of the baubles put on the tree. This is our normal return and is estimated at a value of around $38,000. The Presidents Lunch is being held at Geranium Cottage( $35 BYO)n on Sunday Jan 6th. A booking has been made for 30 so book early with Carol to assure yourself of a seat. |
I attended the District Presidents’ Meeting last Saturday.
We thank Frank and the staff at Springfield House for their service during the year and their hospitality. We also than them for giving us a wonderful candlelight meal tonight.
We meet again on Sunday January 6th at Geranium Cottage. The next meeting at Springfield House will be January 14th.
Anne and I wish you all a happy and joyful Christmas followed by a prosperous New Year.
President Colin.
- District AGM was held which took about the same time as our club one to complete.
- We were one of 7 clubs in the district to receive the RI Presidential Citation for helping Rotary Make A Difference in the Lives of People all over the World. Citations are awarded to Clubs who achieve their goals as lodged with RI. The measured goals include those that strengthen Rotary and our club. Increasing club membership, developing sustainable service projects, giving to The Rotary Foundation, and building awareness of Rotary in our community.
- Rotary Australia has managed to get the controversial indemnity clause removed from the Australian version of Form 3.
- The teams working on the merger of District 9685 and 9675 are looking for feedback from every club in each district. Our District has asked us to run a video and PowerPoint at the next Club meeting then take vote of clubs on the next step toward combining the two Sydney districts. This is a voluntary initiative, not forced by RI and likely to take around 5 years to achieve.
- Many clubs have now followed our initiative in liaising with a club in a drought affected area to support farmers need help.
We thank Frank and the staff at Springfield House for their service during the year and their hospitality. We also than them for giving us a wonderful candlelight meal tonight.
We meet again on Sunday January 6th at Geranium Cottage. The next meeting at Springfield House will be January 14th.

President Colin.

This Week's Humour
The Back Pew ...
A pastor's wife was expecting a baby, so he stood before the congregation and asked for a raise.
After much discussion, they passed a rule that whenever the pastor's family expanded; so would his paycheck.
After 6 children, this started to get expensive and the congregation decided to hold another meeting to discuss the pastor's expanding salary.
A great deal of yelling and inner bickering ensued, as to how much the pastor's additional children were costing the church, and how much more it could potentially cost.
After listening to them for about an hour, the pastor rose from his chair and spoke
"Children are a gift from God, and we will take as many gifts as He gives us."
Silence fell over the congregation.
Finally in the back pew, a little old lady struggled to stand, and finally said in her frail voice,
"Rain is also a gift from God, but when we get too much of it, we wear rubbers"
The entire congregation said,
"Amen."
Gotta love those senior citizens!

Things to Ponder
Things to ponder....
Brilliant in its simplicity.....
A. Back off and let those men who want to marry men, marry men.
B. Allow those women who want to marry women, marry women.
C. In three generations, there will be no Greens.
Such an unfair world:-
When a man talks dirty to a woman it's considered sexual harassment.
When a woman talks dirty to a man its $10.50/min (charges may vary).
My wife and I had words, but I didn't get to use mine.
Don't worry about avoiding temptation. As you grow older, it will avoid you.
Wife to husband: You told me you'd spend your whole life trying to make me happy.
Husband to wife: I didn't expect to live this long!
As I grow older.... My mind doesn't just wander... Sometimes it buggers off completely.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.
The Ultimate: Isn't it weird that in this country our flag and culture offends so many people, yet our benefits don’t.

Royal Job Interview
Two blokes living in the Australian outback saw a couple of jobs advertised by the Queen of England. She was looking for footmen, to walk beside her carriage.
They applied and were very happy to be flown to London for an interview with Her Majesty.
She says to them: “Because my footmen must wear long white stockings, I must see your ankles to be sure they are not swollen or misshapen."
After they show her their ankles, the Queen says: “It is also important that you don’t have knobby knees, so I need to see your knees too.”
Once she has seen their knees, she says: “Now everything appears to be in shape, so I just need to see your testimonials.”
Nine years later, when the pair are finally released from prison, one of the blokes says to the other:
”I reckon, if we just had a bit more education we would have got that job!"
