Save Our Kids

Monday, 14th January

Lester Pearson (Member RC Gosford North) presents "Save Our Kids"
An excerpt from a speech by Emma McBride MP (15th February 2017)
I rise today to recognise a life changing program running on the Central Coast: Save Our Kids. It was created by Lester Pearson, who was named 2017 Central Coast Citizen of the Year for his work with the program and another passion project, Coats for Kids, which provides warm clothing for children sleeping rough or in refuges. Lester has dedicated himself to supporting some of the most vulnerable young people on the coast. Save Our Kids began in 2011 at the Rotary Club of Gosford North and was founded as a youth suicide prevention program, which filled a gap that saw Rotary Club supporting young achievers but not doing as much as they would like to support those struggling with mental health issues. ...

December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month

Picture
Our health is everything. Yet 400 million people in the world can’t afford or don’t have access to basic health care. We believe good health care is everyone’s right.
Disease results in misery, pain, and poverty for millions of people worldwide. That’s why treating and preventing disease is so important to us. We lead efforts both large and small. We set up temporary clinics, blood donation centers, and training facilities in underserved communities struggling with outbreaks and health care access. We design and build infrastructure that allows doctors, patients, and governments to work together.
Our members combat diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and polio. Prevention is important, which is why we also focus on health education and bringing people routine hearing, vision, and dental care.
How Rotary makes help happen
Disease does not prevent itself. We educate and equip communities to stop the spread of life-threatening diseases. Rotary members have hundreds of health projects underway around the world at any given time.

Significant Club Fundraising Events during the year

The Book Sale March 2018
As the result of a lot of hard work the April Book Sale was a great success, especially from  the organisers Andrew Little Max Henderson, Neville Hansen and Clive Denmark.  Funds raised were circa $15,000.  Well done.

2018 Trivia Night

The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 25 August 2018 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,250 towards the charities we support.

The Garage Sale
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 7&8 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.

Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result.

President's Report  3rd December

It was a great pleasure to welcome 31 members and guests to this evenings meeting.  Our guests were Brian Furrer and Senthil Kumar (SK)

Rosemary and Rob are still travelling so Ric is our Sergeant again for tonight.

The Tree of Joy team who are still busy re-supplying the baubles on the tree and collecting the presents.  Sorting is on Thursday 13th Dec at 7 pm at Jill and David’s place.

The Presidents New Year Lunch is at Geranium Cottage ($35 and BYO) - Sunday Jan 6 12.30 for 1 pm.  A booking has been made for 30 so book early with Carol to assure yourself of a seat.

Rotary Down Under was of particular importance to us this month as it included an article on our Coonabarabran adventure. (see below)

The AGM was short and sweet – we now have an updated constitution and bylaws.  Some changes are being implemented in our accounting practices to make it easier to conduct next year’s audit.
Picture
The club assembly was an opportunity to share the outcome of the Club Survey held earlier in the year.  Twenty nine response out of our 39 membership is beyond expectation.  The Survey essentially followed the Rotary District Club Health format, but using Survey Monkey to run it.  Many thanks to Edwina (Kerry’s PA) for putting the questions into Survey Monkey.  Essentially the club is in good health, however there are some things that should be attended to.

As a result of the survey we will not longer toast the Queen nor include the prayer.  We will aim to finish at 8.30 if possible.

Neville outlined the fundraising committee proposal.  It is hoped to hold the first meeting before the end of the year.

Janelle asked for volunteers to host an exchange student starting next July, however, there were no volunteers so that situation changes it is unfortunately the end of our participation in the Youth Exchange Program.

Until next week have fun, and be an inspiration to others.
President Colin

QUIZ FOR MY VERY BRIGHT FRIENDS
MY FRIEND SHOULD NOT HAVE SENT THIS TO ME !!!        thank goodness it has the answers at the bottom

QUIZ FOR MY VERY BRIGHT FRIENDS

There are only nine questions.   This is a quiz for people who know everything!

I found out in a hurry that I didn't. These are not trick questions

They are straight questions with straight answers..

1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.

2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward ?

3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegetables?

4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside?

5. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle?

6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters ' dw' and they are all common words. Name two of them.

7. There are 14 punctuation marks in English grammar. Can you name at least half of them?

8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.

9. Name 6 or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter 'S.'

Answers To Quiz :

1 The one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends: Boxing.

2 North American landmark constantly moving backward: Niagara Falls .. The rim is worn down about two and a half feet each year because of the millions of gallons of water that rush over it every minute.

3 Only two vegetables that can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons: Asparagus and rhubarb .

4 The fruit with its seeds on the outside: Strawberry .

5 How did the pear get inside the brandy bottle? It grew inside the bottle. The bottles are placed over pear buds when they are small, and are wired in place on the tree. The bottle is left in place for the entire growing season. When the pears are ripe, they are snipped off at the stems.

6 Three English words beginning with dw: Dwarf, dwell and dwindle...

7 Fourteen punctuation marks in English grammar: Period, comma, colon, semicolon, dash, hyphen, apostrophe, question mark, exclamation point, quotation mark, brackets, parenthesis, braces, and ellipses.

8 The only vegetable or fruit never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form but fresh: Lettuce.

9 Six or more things you can wear on your feet beginning with 'S': Shoes, socks, sandals, sneakers, slippers, skis, skates, snowshoes, stockings, stilts.

PLEASE DO YOUR PART; Today is National Mental Health Day.

You can do your part by remembering to send this e-mail to at least one genius challenged person.

Okay, my job's done!

Don't send it back to me. I've already failed it once

Never squat with your spurs on
Will Rogers, who died  in a 1935 crash in Alaska with bush pilot, Wiley Post, is virtually  unknown today but was one of the greatest country sages ever  known.
 Some of his  sayings:
1   Never slap a man who's chewing tobacco.
2    Never kick a cow chip on a hot day.
3   There are two theories to arguing with a woman. Neither  works.
4   Never miss a good chance to shut up.
5   Always drink upstream from the herd.
6   If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.
7   The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and put it back into your  pocket.
8   There are three kinds of men:
The ones that learn by reading.
The few who learn by observation.
The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.
9  Good judgment  comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.
 10.  If you're riding' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure its  still there.
 11.  Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n than puttin' it back  in.
 12.  After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up  until a hunter came along and shot him.
The moral: When  you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut.

ABOUT GROWING OLDER
First  ~  Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying  about your age and start bragging about it.
Second ~ The  older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.
Third ~ Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me. I want  people to know 'why' I look this way. I've travelled a long way, and  some of the roads weren't paved.
Fourth ~ When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to your youth, think of algebra
Fifth ~ You know you are getting old when everything either  dries up or leaks.
Sixth ~ I don't know how I got over the hill without getting  to the top.
Seventh ~ One  of the many things no one tells you about aging is that its such a nice change  from being young.
Eight  ~  One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been.
Ninth ~ Being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable and relaxed.
Tenth ~ Long ago, when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks,  it was called witchcraft. Today it's called golf.
And, finally ~ If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have anything to laugh at when you're old.
