St Gabriel's Project
Rotary helps children with disabilities
The West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook Rotary Club has just completed its second project at St Gabriel’s in Castle Hill. St Gabriel's is an independent, co-educational, Catholic school catering for students with disabilities such as sensory impairment, intellectual disability in the mild to moderate range, and autism.
Our first project was to provide a shaded sensory playground and storage shed. This time we have built a vegetable garden for the children to experience hands-on gardening. The garden has raised beds, a water tank and garden shed.
Club members spent an enjoyable, rewarding and hard-working three days constructing the garden.

What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.

Significant Club Fundraising Events during the year
The Garage Sale 2018
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 13 & 14 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |

President's Report 1st July
Tonight we held a Vocational Visit at Cranbrook Residences. What a wonderful place to enjoy resort style living. Thanks to Kerry and Bill for allowing the Club to see their workplace.
Tony C informed us of the power of the press as a retired policeman transferred a donation to Coonabarabran Drought Relief after reading of the Club’s support in Dooral Roundup. Colin presented the Ann Turner Award to Kerry and Bill for their efforts in Speaker selection and Bunnings BBQs. District Changeover is taking place this Saturday night. Next week we will see Foster Care Angels and I hope to see you at Springfield House. Keith |
Night Report 1st July
The night was a Vocational visit to Cranbrook Residential Care at Bella Vista and what an enjoyable night it was.
President Keith opened the meeting
We were then welcomed by Kerry Mann who is the CEO of the facility. Bill Mann is the Property Manager of the premises and keeps the place in tip top condition which means that for residents living there they don’t have to lift a finger to fix anything, mow anything, pull a weed anywhere or any of the normal chores related with home ownership. We met in the restaurant area for dinner and then were taken on a tour of the very impressive facility, including the lounge / dining area where residents can entertain large family groups, and even show a movie in the Theatre room.... It is more like a luxury home than what we usually think of as “retirement living or “Aged Care Facilities”
Colin Sharpe (IPP) awarded Bill and Kerry Mann the Ann Turner Award since they had been unable to be at Change Over and which is handed over to the next recipient next year, and this year also a Certificate for them to keep themselves. The couple received this award for being newer members who had made a huge contribution to the working of the club, Kerry has organised the Speaker Roster.
Bill was also commended for this work organising the Bunnings BBQ’s and which had been run extremely effectively.
Tony Makin and Ricardo Raad received Thank You gifts from Colin for their assistance during his time as President.
Colin Sharpe also announced that 10’ Member Talks would continue this year and that he would be the first to put his hand up to speak next week. Any member can take the opportunity to speak of his/her business/life history/any hobby or interest /summary of a trip they have taken/ anything of interest. Put your hands up folk!
Tony Coote told us that due to an article that Colin Sharpe had written and which appeared in the Dooral Roundup regarding the drought and our affiliation with Coonabarabran Rotary Club... a gift of $1,000 had been received from a reader living in Cromer on the Northern beaches and was to be donated to the farmers. The donor has been thanked by the club and invited to attend a meeting.
David Turnbull gave a summary of the St.Gabriels school project and thanked all those who had contributed to the project of providing and installing a new water tank, a garden shed, and raised garden beds at the school in preparation for planting vegetables.
The members who contributed to this community project were Tony Coote, Neville Hansen, Douglas Lam, Adrian Sonego, Brian Furrer, Cawas Sahukar and Peter Stanton. Gino Savio also contributing all the pipe and fittings that were used on the project.
We are invited along to the school to help the kids plant those vegetables in the near future.
Neville Hansen Thanked David Turnbull and Tony Coote for managing the St Gabriel’s project.
Ronald McDonald BBQ lunch to go ahead... 30/7/19 we need 10 – 12 people on the day. To be there 9.45 finished by 2pm.
West Pennant Hills Family Fun Fair. 11/8/19 We to do the BBQ and provide our Trailer.
Woodchips.... a large quantity had been dropped at the Uniting Church which members were welcome to avail themselves of.
Heather.... Neville reported that Heather is very well at the moment and thanked members for their support during her illness.
We then went on the tour of the facility and afterwards sweets/tea.coffee were served...
After some discussion Adrian won the Heads and Tails!!!
The meeting closed at 8.45 ish....

This Week's Humour
*Some Humour A Day Keeps the Boredom Away*
I asked my new girlfriend what sort of books she's interested in.
She said - Cheque books.
The easiest way to make your old car run better,
is to check the prices of new car.
Q: What's the difference between a good lawyer and a great lawyer?
A: A good lawyer knows the law.
A great lawyer knows the judge.
Definition of Nurse :
A beautiful woman who holds your hand for one full minute and then expects your pulse to be normal.
Boss:- "We are very keen on cleanliness. Did you wipe your feet on the mat as you came in?"
New employee: "Yes, sir."
Boss: "We are also keen on truthfulness. There is no mat."
Q: Why dogs don't marry?
A: Because they are already leading a dog's life!
Q: What's the similarity
between mother & wife?
A: One woman brings you into the world crying & the other ensures you continue to do so.
Q: What's the difference between a good secretary and a personal secretary?
A: One says 'Good morning, boss'.
The other says 'It's morning, boss.'
Keep smiling !!

A newly married Alan goes to meet Father George.
He greets the priest and says, 'Father, I need to talk to you.'
The Priest asks, 'Is it a confession, my son?'
Alan replies, 'No, Father! I need to clarify something.'
The Priest takes Alan to his private chamber and says, 'Tell me, Alan. What is it?'
Alan asks, 'Father, why do the kindest of girls begin their quest to change men after marriage?'
The Priest smiles and replied, 'Alan, my son; as the bride walks down the long aisle, her brain registers 3 stimulii.
The altar, the choir and the sound of the hymn being sung.
Aisle, altar, and hymn.
She becomes mesmerized.
Aisle, altar, hymn.
Aisle, altar, hymn.
Aisle, altar, hymn.
And finally, as she stops beside the groom, she is already saying to herself -
I'LL ALTER HIM.'
