Monday 7th May
STOP PRESS
Taffy Campbell has unfortunately been forced to travel interstate, for family reasons, and the talk "The Life of a Coldstream Guard is deferred.
The speaker on Monday night is Ms Azita Abdollahian. The subject is homelessness.

Bulletin Editor Notes
- We will continue with the Partner Night
- We will forgo the "dress up"
- My research has uncovered the following:
Extract from Hawkesbury Gazette (August 16, 2017)
Azita Abdollahian wants to make a difference to those most in need.
The hairdresser, who owns Bebe’s Hair and Beauty in Castle Hill, is collecting goods to distribute to the homeless.
Ms Abdollahian said a video on social media about a homeless man being harassed sparked her passion for helping the vulnerable.
“I made hot soup and went there [Central Station], and the people asked when I was coming back, so I said next week,” she said.
“I started talking to my clients and using Facebook to talk about how amazing my experience was.
“People were dropping things in all the time and it became too hard to manage so I made a Facebook group.”
Since then, Ms Abdollahian visits the city at least once a week distributing clothing, water and food to homeless people.

Rock of Ages
It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strips last legendary venues, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality.
Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock and roll fairy-tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall.
Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip–and themselves–before it's too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more hold the answer.

What it takes to be a Rotarian
This article is inspired by an article from the RC of Paterson (Carol's brother's Club). Indeed, I have plagiarised heavily.
Significant Club fundraising events during the year
The Book Sale March 2018. As the result of a lot of hard work the April Book Sale was a great success, especially from the organisers Max Henderson, Andrew Little and Clive Denmark. Funds raised were circa $15,000. Well done.
2017 Trivia Night
The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 26 August 20167at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising just over $5,000 towards the charities we support.

The Garage Sale
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 7&8 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result.

President's Report 30th April
President Colin welcomed 27 members and the guest speaker Amanda Barnes from the E-Club of Sydney to the meeting.
Charlie will not be President next year due to health problems. I have agreed to stay on for another year. Consequently, some changes have also been made to the Director portfolios and two new directors have volunteered to join the board. Andrew is stepping down from Fundraising and will mentor Charlie in that role. Jaswant has agreed to take on Community Services and Tony Coote membership. We now have a full complement for Directors.

Other key roles:
A big thank you needs to go to Keith who has done a fabulous job finding bulletin editors for the next Rotary year. Keith has published the bulletin for all of this year as well as being website master and membership director. For the two previous years it was a shared role with Keith being the principle bulletin editor as well as website manager and membership director. Keith is stepping down next year and fortunately we have three volunteers to be editors (Bob, Paul and Neville). Training will be given in the use of Weebly (our website builder program) will be given. If anyone else wishes to be an associate editor please let Keith know. It is not essential to be an IT expert, just a capable PC user.
District Assembly
Thank you to all the directors for next year who gave up their Sunday to learn about their roles for next year and to get ideas for their portfolio programs. From what I hear we are in for an interesting year ahead. One of the things I will be doing is re-visiting our Club Vision and short to long term strategies. The Vision was last reviewed in Barry’s presidential year. We will review it at our first Club Assembly for 2018-19 on July 9th.
Donations for this year have been finalised:
Rotary youth programs
School prizes
St Gabriel’s
Marayong School
Guides/RFS
Next week Taffy Campbell will talk on The Life of a Coldstream Guard - Secrets from the Palace. Janelle has asked that members come dressed as Britons.
On May 21 we are meeting at PCYC for dinner, to hear about PCYC and get a tour of the facility.
- Sergeant at arms - Rosemary
- Program - Kerry and Bill M
- Bunnings BBQs - TBA
- Bulletin – To be shared by Neville, Bob, Paul

· Spoke eloquently about have we lost the art of saying “Thank You” and that includes Rotarians too.
· Unfortunately, common sense and common courtesy is becoming less common
· Explaining the definition of “thank you’ as “gratitude” which is not only the greatest virtue but the parent of all others.
· Quick to criticise but slow to praise.
· Are we saying enough thank you at home we may not be able to change the world but then maybe we can start by simply learning the art of saying “Thank You”.

This Week's Humour
How Clancy would communicate in 2018
I had written him a text
Which I'd sent, hoping next
Time he came in mobile coverage
He'd have time to say hello.
But I'd heard he'd lost his iPhone,
So I emailed him from my smart phone,
Just addressed, on spec, as follows:
clancy@theoverflow
And the answer redirected
Wasn't quite what I'd expected
And it wasn't from the shearing mate
Who'd answered once before.
His ISP provider wrote it
And verbatim I will quote it:
'This account has been suspended:
You won't hear from him anymore.'
In my wild erratic fancy
Visions come to me of Clancy:
Out of reach of mobile coverage
Where the Western rivers flow.
Instead of tapping on the small screen,
He'd be camping by the tall green
River gums, a pleasure
That the town folk never know.
Well, the bush has friends to meet him
But the rest of us can't greet him:
Out there, even Telstra's network
Doesn't give you any bars.
He can't blog the vision splendid
Of the sunlit plains extended
Or tweet the wondrous glory
Of the everlasting stars.
I am sitting at the keyboard,
I'm too stressed out to be bored
As I answer all the emails
By the deadlines they contain.
While my screen fills with promotions
For 'Viagra' and strange potions
And announcements of the million-dollar
Prizes I can claim.
But the looming deadlines haunt me
And their harassing senders taunt me
That they need response this evening
For tomorrow is too late!
But their texts, too quickly ended,
Often can't be comprehended
For their writers have no time to think
They have no time to wait.
And I sometimes rather fancy
That I'd like to trade with Clancy:
Just set up an email bouncer
Saying 'Sorry, had to go.'
While he faced an inbox jamming
Up with deadlines and with spamming
As he signed off every message:
clancy@theoverflow.

The Lecture
An elderly man is stopped by the police around 1 a.m. and is asked where he is going at this time of night.
The man replies, "I am going to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body."
The officer then asks, "Really? Who is giving that lecture at this time of night?"
The man replies, "That would be my wife."

Little girls
My wife hosted a dinner party for all our friends, some of whom we hadn't seen for ages and everyone was encouraged to bring their children along as well.
All throughout dinner my wife's best friend's four-year-old daughter stared at me as I sat opposite her.
The girl could hardly eat her food for staring. I checked my shirt for spots, felt my face for food,
and patted my hair in place, but nothing stopped her from staring at me.
Finally I asked her, "Why are you staring at me?"
Everyone at the table had noticed her behavior, and the table went quiet, waiting for her response.
The little girl said, "I'm just waiting to see how you drink like a fish."
