Friday 23rd November
Hornsby RSL

$32.00-Senior or $37.00-Adult (Show only)
Dinner Option (Bistro) 6.00pm
Show 7.30pm
We have the opportunity to see the NSW premiere of Tarzan the Musical presented by Sydney Youth Musical Theatre at Hornsby RSL Club on Friday 23 November at 7:30pm.  Tarzan features heart-pumping music by rock legend, Phil Collins.

Washed up on the shores of West Africa, an infant boy is taken in and raised by gorillas who name him Tarzan. Apart from striving for acceptance from his ape father, Tarzan's life is mostly monkey business until a human expedition treks into his tribe's territory, and he encounters creatures like himself for the first time.
Tarzan struggles to navigate a jungle, thick with emotion, as he discovers his animal upbringing clashing with his human instincts.

If you wish to attend on Friday 23rd November please email Max, make your payment ($32.00-Senior or $37.00-Adult) into the club’s General Account and identify your payment with your Surname and "Tarzan".

Significant Club Fundraising Events during the year

The Book Sale March 2018
As the result of a lot of hard work the April Book Sale was a great success, especially from  the organisers Andrew Little Max Henderson, Neville Hansen and Clive Denmark.  Funds raised were circa $15,000.  Well done.

2018 Trivia Night

The Club held a very successful trivia night on Saturday 25 August 2018 at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, raising near $6,250 towards the charities we support.

The Garage Sale
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 7&8 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.

Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result.

President's Report  30th October 2018

A short report from me tonight, mostly reminders to book in for club events occurring before the end of the year.

I express my thank you to the Glenhaven Club for extending an invitation to join their meeting tonight.  A good time was had by the 29 West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook members and guests present.

Our guests tonight were Rotarian partners Celine and Patrica, prospective members, Vicky Lock, and Senthill Kumal Palaniswamy.  Ann Turner (Wife of the club’s charter president Trevor) and Fredrike Heynen, her exchange student from 1981-82 while Trevor was a member of the Galston Club.  Alick Grant from the Burntisland & Kinghorn Club in Scotland joined us for the second time during his holiday in Cherrybrook.  He is going home later this week.

The guest speaker was Dianne Hooke, Head of Campus at St Gabriel’s School, speaking about autism.  Don’t forget to let Tony Coote know by Nov 5th if you are attending the St Gabriel’s School Tour on Nov 2st.  See Bulletin for full details.

I remind members to let me know if you can help with the “Anna’s cows” Raffle at Cherrybrook Shopping Centre.  Nov 7 to 11. First prize is a wooden rocking horse (value $575), 2nd prize is wooden skittles and third prize $50 cash.  Thank you to those who purchased tickets from Anne tonight.  Sales are off to a good start.
Picture
Neville and I would like help from 4-6 members this Saturday to do a final clean-up and equipment storage at the Fire Station Containers.  Please let me or Neville know if you can help.

The Combined Clubs Meeting at Epping RSL on Nov 12th is a replacement meeting for our normal Monday night.  Don’t forget to book in with Carol this week.
Please book in by the end of this week for the end of Year Lunch at Muirfield Golf Club, currently this event is not viable unless more members and partners book in.  See Bulletin for full details.

Next week is Melbourne Cup night so come along in your best finery and win a prize. See Bulletin for full details.
Don’t forget December 3rd is AGM night so please send your nominations for the Club Board and President Elect to Tony Makin as soon as possible.  We will also hold a club assembly on the same night.  This will an opportunity to have you input on some pending changes with the way the weekly meetings are held.  The proposed changes are the result of the club survey held by Tony Coote earlier in the year.

Until next week when we will celebrate the running of the Melbourne Cup have fun and be an inspiration to others.
President Colin

Night Report 30th October

This week we met on Tuesday Night as guests of RC of Glenhaven.  Our contingent numbered 28, and this included several guests:
  • Celine Laroumanie and Patricia Baseley
  • Potential members Vicky Lock and Senthill Kumal Palaniswamy
  • Ann Turner and her exchange student from 1981-2 Fredrike Heynen.
  • And a second visit from Alick Grant from RC of Burntisland & Kinghorn (Scotland)
Colin introduced Larissa to the assembly.  Larissa reported on a trip to Launceston, Tasmania with another Brazilian exchange student.
Before the meeting start, Anne Sharpe sold Raffle Tickets that have as first prize a locally made Rocking Horse.  Proceeds from the Raffle are to support Anna’s Cows (Mission ‘Nam Possible).
It was interesting to watch Glenhaven promote Bohemian Rhapsody ($40 pp) and a Cup Trifecta for Melbourne Cup.
Helen Games (Glenhaven) introduced Dianne Hooke – Head of Campus at St Gabriel’s School.  Dianne has been in Special Education for 23 years.
Dianne proceeded to cover the Autism Spectrum.
  • What and Who
  • Very affected to “Not So”.
  • It is lifelong.
  • Some are highly intelligent.  The label “Asperger’s” has now been replaced by “High achievers”
  • Most are “mildly  to moderately” affected and this represents most at St Gabriel’s
Some people you may have heard of that have Autism
Mozart                       Woody Allen
Dan Aykroyd
Temple Grandin       Lewis Carroll                  Daryl Hanna
Alexis Wineman       Albert Einstein

There are two domains:
  • Social Communication
    • People with autism have difficulty establishing and maintaining relationships. They do not respond to many of the non-verbal forms of communication that many of us take for granted like facial expressions, physical gestures and eye contact.
  • Behavioural
    • Exhibit restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour.
Neither may see the whole picture.
Other facts:
  • Affects 1 in 70
  • Four times as many boys as girls
  • 83% are diagnosed before 25 yo.
Possible causes are:
  • Genetic and environmental
  • Mutation/gene risk
  • Pre-natal
  • Unknown
Finally, Dianne thanked both Clubs for the following improvements at St Gabriel’s:
  • Talk Tubes
  • Shade Sails
  • Shed
  • Rotary Golf Day
  • BBQ’s at Design 2 Shine
  • Class set of iPads (Year 7)
Both Presidents talked to assembly and the meeting was closed.
