Karen Lambert - our newest member
I was born in Kent, England and came to Australia on an overland hitchhiking trip many years ago and have never returned to live in the UK.
I have 2 children and 2 grandchildren and have lived in the Hills District for nearly all the time I have been in Australia except for 2 or 3 years in Queensland and Batemans Bay. Australia is, in my opinion, the best country in the world to live in and now that I have the time, I feel I should give back to the community I live in as a mark of respect for the privilege and one of the best ways to do so is through Rotary. I can, not only actively volunteer for all the wonderful fund-raising events undertaken by this club but maybe, if the opportunity ever arises, take part in Regional and National events. I am amazed by the diverse and interesting projects undertaken by Rotary International all over the world. Karen Lambert |

Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) will be working with Rotary Clubs within the regions in providing assistance to affected communities. RAWCS has registered a Rotary Australia Relief Fund project to seek financial assistance. Donations are tax deductible.

Collaborating with another Rotary Club
Hi Team,
This is not official cluster business, but I hope you do not mind. Some of you will know that my Club (Wahroonga) supports a food pantry charity, Hornsby Connect, of which I also happen to be President. Our shop manager, Jo Grant, has been shortlisted as Westfield Local Hero for Hornsby. If she wins the runoff ballot between the three candidates, Hornsby Connect will receive $20,000. With that money in the kitty, there will be a reduced demand on Wahroonga Rotary Club for funds, and indirectly other Rotary projects will benefit. I am hoping that you might circulate the attached flyer, perhaps in your newsletters, and encourage your members and friends to vote for Jo - just scan the QR code.
Thank you in anticipation of your support.
Kind regards,
Stuart Armstrong

Friday 18th August |
Regional Council Election
Shape the future of Rotary and Rotaract in Zone 8: Expressions of Interest for the Zone 8 Regional Council open! Dear Member of Rotary, As part of the Regionalisation Pilot, Rotary and Rotaract clubs in participating districts across Zone 8 will soon elect a Regional Council to represent and support them at a regional level. Expressions of Interest for positions on the Regional Council are now open. The Regional Council will develop a consistent strategy across Zone 8, helping build a stronger Rotary brand and establish large scale partnerships with external organisations. The Regional Council will also provide greater support to clubs and members, enabling Rotarians and Rotaractors to focus on delivering the impactful projects that make Rotary great. Club Presidents will consult with their members, then submit a vote on behalf of their club once voting opens in October 2023. All clubs will be able to cast one vote for each Regional Council position they are eligible to vote for, with each vote being weighted equally regardless of club membership numbers. Club Presidents and Secretaries will receive emails closer to the date with voting instructions. Voting is a key opportunity to have your say in who will lead Rotary and Rotaract at a regional level for the next few years. More details on the election process can be found here. Throughout the Pilot, districts and District Governors will remain in place, with certain responsibilities delivered by the Regional Council. Calling for Expressions of Interest Are you passionate about making a difference, have a deep understanding of Rotary’s values and have strong leadership skills? If so, you should consider submitting an Expression of Interest to join the Regional Council. We need your expertise and dedication to help provide greater and more effective support to clubs and members. This is an incredible opportunity to have a lasting impact on Rotary and Rotaract throughout Zone 8. We are looking for enthusiastic, experienced Rotary members (Rotarians and Rotaractors) to apply for nine elected Regional Council roles: • Chair • Chair-Elect • Portfolio Lead – Service Projects and Programs • Portfolio Lead – Public Image and Partnerships • Portfolio Lead – Membership • Portfolio Lead – Learning and Development • Portfolio Lead – Major Fundraising and Grants • Portfolio Lead – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion • Rotaract Nominee (Only current Rotaractors are eligible for this role) The remaining role, Rotary Communities Nominee, will be elected in 2024 once Rotary Community Leaders have been appointed. Position descriptions and selection criteria for each role are available here. Please read these carefully to ensure you are eligible and suitable for your chosen role. Please note you can only submit an Expression of Interest for one position on the Regional Council. How to apply Step One Submit an Expression of Interest via the online form. Please note you will need to select a Club Officer from your Rotary or Rotaract club (your Club President, Secretary or Treasurer) to confirm you are a club member of good standing. Step Two Once you have submitted an Expression of Interest, your chosen Club Officer will automatically receive an email containing a link they can use to certify that you are a club member of good standing. Please ensure you have notified your chosen Club Officer so they know to look out for an email. Steps one and two must be completed by Monday 4 September 12pm AEST. Step Three After your Expression of Interest has been reviewed and your eligibility confirmed, you will receive an email containing a link to apply for your chosen Regional Council position on Tuesday 5 September 2023. In a recent email from Clean Up Australia a method for recycling mobile phones was promoted.
Are you stashing away old mobile phones in your bottom drawer? You're not alone! Only 1 in 3 of us have recycled a mobile device and it's estimated Australians are collectively holding on to more than 4.9 million old phones, with an average of two unused mobiles in every household.
So let's change that! By simply sending in an old mobile phone (any make, any model, working or not) for recycling (and postage is free!) you could win one of two luxury sustainable holidays worth over $24,000 - thanks to our friends at Nokia, MobileMuster & Wander.
You and three friends could head off on a four-day holiday to Kangaroo Island, SA or Scenic Rim, QLD with luxury eco accommodation, flights, car hire and daily activities included.

Did you know over 95% of the materials in a mobile phone can be recovered for reuse?
It means that fewer raw materials need to be extracted and processed to make new products.

What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.
